I stopped into Speakeasy around 5:30 on a Thursday afternoon and found the place empty. With velvet covered couches, dark wooden desks, and oldtime decor including a vase of peacock feathers and a rotary phone, I was filled with instant ease. That and the ocean breeze blew in and out so freely you'd think you were on Campbell Parade (minus the crowds). I ordered a glass of their first listed Pinot Noir, Six Foot Six. The menu described the wine as "light and a little fruity." I won't beg to differ. It was drinkable to the point of slurpable and went down effortlessly for a red on a warm afternoon. I ordered a dish of mixed olives to accompany which was a good choice. As the late afternoon grew later, the place filled up a bit, but the energy stayed easy and carefree. The waitress might have played a part in this as well. She breezed around with great comfort, occasionally sitting with the guests and making informed wine recommendations. Speakeasy is definitely my kind of place. And I'm so glad it's in Bondi Beach because I needed my narrow-minded perspective to be expanded. And I can now speak easy, because expanded it has been.

I was first alerted to this momentous dining experience by an American friend who sent me a video of the action. I went to try it on a Saturday night. The spot doesn't take reservations, except for parties of seven or more and on the last Sunday of every month, and it was already packed with a two-hour wait by the time I walked up. With timely obligations, I had to leave but vowed to come back again. It turns out, Buffalo Dining Club is a perfect place to visit for lunch on a Wednesday, around 12:30 p.m. There were plenty of seats, though be warned much of it is communal in this hip restaurant that seats around 50 people altogether. If you're a twosome on the patio, chances are good you'll be rubbing elbows with your neighbor, and a substantial long table takes up much of the space in the dining room. Cheese lovers will adore Buffalo Dining Club, which imports mozzarella from Italy and has an amazing burrata appetizer ($22 AUD). The giant hunk is melt-in-your-mouth goodness with every bite. The cacio e pepe ($20), or spaghetti with salt, pepper, olive oil and parsley twirled in a massive wheel of pecorino cheese, is gooey and flavour-packed. The show is even better, as a server flashily spins the pasta for amazed eyes. The gnocchi ($20) is also top-notch, delightful pillows of buffalo ricotta dough with napolitana sauce. Getting the items mentioned and sharing makes for a perfect meal for two. They were just opening the garage door but they made sure to great us immediately (we weren't waiting near but they knew why we were there) and told us to come on in. The service here is impeccable. They ask your name and actually use it. They have actual conversations with you, about whatever topic lands. We got so much great visitor information from each person working. Ending up having one of the best meals in Melbourne because of it. The space is really small, standing room only. And if you're there long enough, you can see a line forming outside. After our second drink, we didn't want to take up more space so we decided to head out, but we never felt forced or like we should leave. I could come here after work everyday and have a Spicy Ok! We sat in a booth, just as you enter. My only complaint (the only reason I didn't give it five stars) is the place was not especially busy. We were not the only ones there, but there were only a couple other people/groups. I generally like a place to have more people (although it's a fine line, because I also want to be able to get a seat). Perhaps I'm being picky. Overall, Doris & Beryl's is a unique place with great drinks.
