Waaaaaaaay back, a few Yelpers and I did the old rail ale trail, and were met with a gloriously sunny bit in the afternoon. At this point we exited the train, and made our way through some really rather rowdy crowds of lads, to this delightful pub. I'd read the reviews before, and you know what it's like - you see five stars and you're expectations are lifted. Well, allow them to be, as this place is a real treat. On a bank holiday it might not be the best time to visit, being as there will be men arriving in droves, swigging lager (why? it's an ALE trail!) and singing loud songs in the carriage and at the bar, at any one singled out person. (On this trip their mood was jovial, as all the guys were singing at their friend who was on the phone, "he's texting his boyfriend", to the tune of the White Stripes. And then anyone who was using their phone. Including some old guy in his 80s. But he seemed cool with it.) As such, there was less of a chance to soak it in, but this is the picture. As soon as you're off the train, you'll find yourself in a wonderfully picturesque part of Yorkshire. There's a wee stream running nearby, trees, birds, gorgeous old stone houses, and this pub two seconds away. Having glanced at the photos, it looks like you can expect more than pub grub to be served, although we'd not a chance to indulge. As for beer, expect a really great range of ales for the supping, amongst bottles, lagers, and the usual. Then there's a lovely bit of a beer garden out the front and the back - plenty of seating for outdoor pintage. The staff were jovial, considering they were being plundered by almost half of Yorkshire, and the pub itself has great character. In essence, this one's worth a revisit or five. Great meal here after finishing a walk in Marsden. Steak and ale pie with their own ale (it's a brewery tap pub) served with well prepared vegetables and superb chunky chips. Very friendly staff. The kitchen missed the order on the desserts which resulted in a bit of a delay. However, the staff were very apologetic and gave us the desserts and coffees free which was more than fair. Dark chocolate terrine was splendid. My friend had an equally impressive creme brûlée with dark chocolate sorbet. Highly recommended. read more

Lager. A filthy interloper into our culture. Imported originally as the mark of a sophisticated drinker, it has become the drink of choice for feckless louts seeking cheap fuel for violence. For years, it supplanted the native tipple of these isles: beer. And as it did so, the atmosphere of quiet local pride and reflective drinking became lost amidst swathes of tracksuits, jewellery, waxy skins and glassy eyed stares. But thanks to a resurgence of interest, the last decade has been a blissful one for those who like their beers proper. Most pubs these days carry at least one half-decent beer - and I don't mean the theme-park beer-lite options of Caffreys or whatever. It's possible to find a halfway decent pint in many pubs - at last! Now taken over by the splendid (and, I hope, continuingly ambitious) Ossett Brewery, the Riverhead has taken it's place on the iconic 'ale trail' across the Pennines. For a little over a fiver for an all day ticket, you can sample ales/get sloshed across 6 or 7 different towns - including one or two in Lancashire, where I won't tread out of principle :) The Riverhead is perfectly pitched for this crowd. Within stumbling distance of the station, it nestles on the riverbank in comely sandstone splendour, snug and welcoming, dense with airborne chatter and the seesaw of pointless conversation. Our visit coincided with some kind of jazz festival so perhaps it was more full than usual. But stood outside in the pleasant chill of early autumn and the crisp Pennine air, nestling a pint of something earthy and frothy, talking drunkenly of this and that, it felt like coming home. read more

Perfect for a sunny afternoon, pub is right by the river so you can take your pint and sit and watch the ducks. They have a micro brewery on site, (even tho it's owned by Osset brewery now) hence a good selection of beer and reasonable price. Is also the centre of activity during the Jazz festival in November which is very much recommended. read more

This pace would easily get 5 stars, if it had more outside space. But that is really the only 'fault' you can find. The strongest points of the Riverhead is the great range of ale and beer in the pub section and the very good selection of food in the restaurant section upstairs. The food is surpassing simply ambitious pub food, it is truly interesting, well cooked, modern British food. I think this is my 3rd visit, and 2nd time eating here. On Sunday - they have a 2 course minimum, which we decided to go for at £14, though we kinda only really wanted one course. I went for soup, followed by pie, and my mate went for salmon followed by pie. Both exceptionally presented, and with really good service. There was even an attempt to accommodate my double-word score of pie and 'roast potatoes' though the kitchen said 'no'. I did get my chips arranged kerplunk stylee though, so there's bonus points for that. Good beer. Some of the ale maybe brewed on site! As for the walk, well we went afterwards, and got lost in the hills on a sunny Autumnal day. A Marsden walk, and Riverhead lunch makes for a good day out in my mind, and a great place to meet a mate from Leeds, if you're from Manchester. Came back at the end of the walk for another drink, and a sit out next to the weir and it's ducks. Recommended. read more
