We stayed at The Robey in August 2024. We were in town for a wedding. The Robey was on the list of recommended accommodations. Because I was surprised at the mediocre review average, I read through some other reviews before writing my own. I'll start by saying it's easy to understand why the reviews fully range from one to five stars. First, The Robey has many different room layouts. There are also lower floors and higher floors. Each type of room easily provides a different experience. So before I go any further, we were in a corner king on the 8th floor. I made the reservations well in advance of our trip and I requested the highest floor available. That combination resulted in a fabulous stay. Our experience was also different in that we flew into Midway and took the Blue Line to Damon. We didn't need to worry about driving, finding a place to park in order to check in, etc. This fact deceased stress and added to our positive experience. Check in was easy and everyone was professional. As stated in other reviews, you will get an old school key. They told us there'd be a relatively large fee for lost keys, which made me unnecessarily nervous. Of course we never lost our key. The views from the corner room are outstanding. I took so many photos. I mean, I could not stop! Same freakin' view, but different sky, different sun, constantly changing. I read some rooms didn't have blackout shades, which is surprising, but I don't know. All I know is all of our windows had blackout shades that closed and opened with the touch of a button. The bathroom amenities were wonderful. The free items in the fridge were a nice touch. One thing bothered me, but not enough to reduce my review by any stars. Generally we don't request room service, but we were there long enough we requested room service near the end of our stay. After our bed was remade, the 'fitted' sheet never fit again. It constantly came off the corners of the bed making sleeping very uncomfortable. We had an early flight and I finally decided to sleep on top of the comforter rather than deal with sleeping on a 'fitted' sheet that simply didn't fit. As others have stated, there are tons of restaurants within walking distance. The restaurant and the roof top were great and I'll review them separately. Oh, we are heading back to Chicago in October and are staying at The Robey again. And I am absolutely crazy because I reserved the Panorama Suite. Do we have that kind of money? Not really, but I wanted the experience and I can't wait! read more

Have been to this hotel twice and enjoy the location in Bucktown near lots of unique restaurants and coffee shops in walking distance. The restaurant downstairs is not bad either and is open for breakfast at 7 am. There is valet parking but also some cheaper options nearby on Spot Hero or street parking. The staff was incredibly kind and saved an Uber Eats order for us in the fridge when we were coming in late at night once. They provide bathrobes and slippers and water bottles in the rooms. read more

Came here Saturday night as a party of three. We were seated relatively quickly among the hustle and bustle of the rooftop bar. It was packed! Staff were prompt and friendly. Everywhere you turned was another shoulder to bump into! The music was at a good volume as well, not too quiet, not too loud. The views of dusk and nighttime of the city in the distance were worth it! We ordered an earl grey cocktail, blackberry cocktail, as well as an IPA. The earl grey was delicious, complete with a flower garnish and cute glass cup! The outside of the city experience here was so nice for those traveling through looking for a more local feel. Stayed here last month for 3 days. Room was ok, If you like industrial, cold feel, you'll love it here. Tall cement ceilings. Long corridor type room. No built in lights. Had just hanging light with tons of sconce/detached type lights. So you have to manually turn/flip each one off. But the light's itself were still very dim, so despite the 15 lights it was still dark like a cave. Had a bit of an echo to the room. Cold floors, so bring your slippers. Weird low hanging pipes were supposed to be a substitute for closet rack. Nice that they provided an umbrella in case it rained though. In room lockers were narrow so didn't fit my wide suitcase. Door had no peephole to see when someone knocked (it was room service fortunately) so that might be a safety concern if a single woman/women traveling alone. Another safety concern is it just had a door handle lock, which any credit card could jimmy open. It didn't have a safety chain or anti-door slider latch lock. So another safety concern for the single female traveler(s)! Especially this area while not the most dangerous at night, but not the safest either. I wouldn't want my single young daughter in this room in this location without those bare minimum safety features on a hotel door. Not even a door stopper was present! See attached door pictures to see what I'm talking about. Maybe not all rooms are like this, so if you're a single female traveler, I'd ask to inspect room door before agreeing to stay in the room. Bathroom sink was not inside bathroom itself, but just outside in hallway. Sink with industrial theme, so zero sink space for any of your toiletries. There's a tiny bench next to it that you'll have to move the stuff next to tv bench to make room for your items, but maybe room for enough for one person. So if you're a group of a girls, there's no sink space for makeup or toiletries! The hand towels are also outside the bathroom area. The bath towels are sitting on a bench INSIDE the shower! Which they get all wet when you do shower, so not the most well planned out shower/bathroom arrangements. lol Ordered room service that was not only expensive but terrible, so I don't recommend room service at all. There are plenty of walkable restaurants nearby that were great, so that's a plus. Also the coffee here was also terrible! There's a walkable cafe that's great and a nearby Starbucks. So Just go there instead!! Overall great accessibility to lots of places and restaurants but for the price of over $400 a night, I won't be back unfortunately. read more

I came here with my parents and I found it fun to sleep in the bunk beds, but the fact that they do not offer much counter space in the bathrooms did not accommodate for our family's needs. They could also add more seats in the hotel rooms for more than one person to sit. read more

I have stayed here on two different occasions in the last two months because my father passed away and I have had to fly in and out of Chicago several times for his funeral and executor duties. On each of the last two trips I decided to spend a little more than I usually would because my life is hard and I miss my dad and I wanted a nice room. Both times I have paid almost $400 a night for a room and both times I have been put on one of the lowest possible floors. This last time I upgraded to a supposedly nicer corner room where great views of the city were promised. Maybe you get those nice views on the upper floor. However, on the lower floors your view is crappy (see attached photos). You have big windows showing you big views of cars very close to you on the street below (which you will also get to hear, since the windows can't block the noise very well when you are so close to the street), a bunch of junk and garbage under the L, an abandoned bank, and stuff like that. It is a bad view. I am sad I am closer to it with big windows looking out on it. The main takeaway is if you are flying in and are not here at 3, you will get a crap room on a low floor. My flight has come in at 6 PM both nights and it appears if you get in any time after mid afternoon you will be stuck on a low crap floor for the same price as all the people getting a great view and not staring at traffic, abandoned banks, and garbage under the L. When we checked in my husband reiterated we would like the highest floor possible (which we also put in the reservation) and the nice young man at the front desk started a long story about because Biden was doing some event in china that put a strain on the San Francisco airport and many people had stayed over--which was the prelude to revealing we once again had a very low floor and a crap room. He kindly said but really all the views are great. While he is kind, what he said is untrue. It doesn't make you feel better to pay almost 400 getting a crap low floor room to have someone tell you it is actually a good view. The counter factual reality is a little maddening to hear. I did admire the young woman I got a long close up view of waiting for the bus for half an hour while reading a book in the cold in the failing light. My husband and I thought It was kind of hilarious that Biden, China and San Francisco were being blamed for our crap view in a Chicago hotel despite the high price and website promises. Maybe that works with right wingers. I guess the logic of the person's statement was that because something happened at an airport in San Francisco our long made reservation didn't matter. We had to have a far worse room than we normally would get because people needed to stay there instead of going back to San Francisco at the last minute, I'm not quite sure why that means we would have to have the lowest crap floor, and they would get the highest because of this but there it is And in the days leading up to this I received a phone call a text and email messages asking if I was really going to stay there. At the time I thought it was because I had had to change an earlier reservation but now I realize it was probably because they were trying to get more rooms for people other than me who matter more. There are some nice things about this hotel: it has black out drapes and is well maintained and has old school style. The guy at the front desk was nice if maddeningly wrong about our too expensive room havng a nice view. Yeah you just got a really bad room but let's be cheery about it! After all you're the one who has to pay the same high rate for the crappy room so we might as well act like It's GREAT!. Not enough to make up for tiny bathrooms with crappy shower and no tub, a lot of noise on the low floors, and not enough light in the room to read a book once you have turned them all on. My big point is: they should charge less for the corner kings on Floors 7 and lower. People on floors 8-14 may have a nice view. I will never know, because I have only been put on the 4th floor and the 3rd floor--since the lobby is first floor and the lounge is on the second this means the 800 I have paid has landed me on the lowest floor and the second lowest floor. I strongly feel anyone on the low floor should be paying $75-100 less than people on 8-14. Just be aware if you are flying in and don't have some kind of in with the hotel, unless they are really underbooked you will be stuck on a low floor and get way less for your money than other people. Their rates should reflect this and they do not. Don't be fooled like I was. Sadly though I was trying to pay more to get something nicer, I paid more to get the least nice rooms of any I stayed in during this sad fall season where I have been in Chicago hotels way too much after losing Dad. This hotel was a big disappointment. Its too much of a gamble. There is a very good chance you will pay top dollar and still be stuck on the bottom. read more

With it being a Marriott property, you're definitely paying for the experience. We showed up about 2 hours before checkin; the clerk said he would call when our room was ready and have our luggage delivered - neither happened - not a good first impression. We went out for breakfast at 10 and our room wasn't cleaned while we were gone. Definitely a beautiful hotel but the other issues would lead me to try another property (probably a Hyatt since they're batting it out of the park these days). read more

3 reasons not to stay at The Robey -- and 1 reason to stay 1. Do not stay at The Robey if you want a peaceful night's sleep. Sirens, street noise, trains rumbling right across the street, all kept me awake until the wee hours 2. My room also had very large windows, and no black out curtains - so I couldn't get my room very dark -- which also didn't help in the sleep department 3. The wifi didn't work in my room, which meant no TV and not being able to send emails, work on projects that were due. When I mentioned it the next morning at check out - I was told "this happens all the time." So, here's your one reason to stay at The Robey. 1. No bedbugs. read more

This is a fiver in terms of ambience and urban comfort. By far the nicest place in Wicker and the best views of the Chicago skyline from miles around. I was on a roadtrip over the summer and stayed here for a few days. My buddy who lives down the street kept telling me about The Robey. So, while I was here during lalapalooza weekend and every hotel had prices through the roof, I took a chance at The Robey and LOVED it. Note- Only one of the valet's knew how to drive my car which has a stick shift. This is an old building converted into rooms. Friendly staff. Beer in the fridge is included in the room price. And that's really the only negitive about here. Its not a cheap hotel. If it were, I'd stay here every time I was in Chicago. The two bars are great. One has a pool. The views are great, but the cocktail bar on the 11th floor has GREAT VIEWS. read more

The views are beautiful and it is a great date night place, but please don't ruin the experience for others with flash photography! Beautiful boutique hotel converted from an old office building. The building is a triangle because it's at the intersection of 3 main avenues in Chicago's Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood. The Blue line is right there and about 3 minutes from I90 Kennedy Expressway about 20 minutes w/o traffic O'Hare and Midway. Much of the original architecture has been maintained, including the original elevators and door locks using actual keys. The rooms are a little quirky owing to the triangular building. The bathroom had a 1950's feel with new faucet, sink and toilet. High end La Labo products were in the bathroom. The neighborhood has a lot of good restaurants. Starbucks is across the street from the hotel, but Stan's Doughnuts and La Colombe coffee around the corner. We didn't eat at Cafe Robey, but heard it was good. We had a great view of downtown. read more

Pool is more for aesthetic and gets very packed and hotel guests do not get priority even though it says so on website! They should save tables for guests! All of the staff was extremely nice besides pool "host"--I can't even begin to say how rude & unhelpful she was. Could hear ppl in hall outside of room and faint sound of train running bc of being an old building... light fixtures in room a little odd (European style knobs). Booked a room for a 2 day stay. The room was extremely cramped. Before booking, i spoke to the front desk and described our need for space. We didn't get it. When I complained, management was unresponsive. The bed wasnt comfortable either. Also, when we arrived, the WiFi was down and keys to the rooms didn't work. The staff assured us that this doesn't happen often. If you need to stay in the area for work and are alone, this hotel has a great location. It's expensive, but it's in the middle of things. This is such a hidden gem in Wicker Park and I'm scared my review will continue to promote and feed its secrets to the world. My review focuses primarily on the second floor lounge. It is such an escape from the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood. The lounge feels like an airport lounge in that once you're inside, amenities are available at a cost but you are free to take a sit, relax, and use their complimentary Wi-Fi while people watching or getting some work done. My friend and I rolled in here after dinner to get work done and we loved simply sitting and relaxing on the couches. We didn't feel pressured to order any food or drinks but I imagine that may change if it's a very busy night and we're taking up some spots. However, it was a pretty lively scene inside with some people working, some drunkenly chatting, and having a grand time. The service team even allowed us to stay past their closing time to get some more work done as they wrapped up in the back. I appreciate it wholeheartedly when businesses let you stay past closing without making you feel like you're a burden. Thanks Robey for the chill productive evening. I recently stated at The Robey while in the Wicker Park/Bucktown area for work. It was difficult to figure out where to park to check-in. There are no real visible signs for the hotel. Once that was figured out, the check in process was fine. It's "old school"'as you get an actual room key instead of an electronic card. The room was nice enough. The floor I was on must have had some work happening as there were ladders and work carts scattered about the hall my first night (they were gone the next afternoon when I returned from my work commitment). The room was large. The bed was SUPER comfortable! There were some odd things about the room - the light switches were small knobs that actually need to be pushed to turn on/off the lights (took me a minute to figure that out). The room was well appointed and included a white noise machine and electric blackout shades. My biggest complaint is the bathroom. It was very large and had a walk in shower with a shower curtain (GROSS). Given all the room in the bathroom, i'm not certain why there isn't a glass door on the shower. Also, there was no counter or shelves around the sink area. I had no place to put my toiletries. And, there are no hooks or ways to hang up a hand towel. Also, the desk in bedroom area was fairly small and wasn't conducive to spreading out my work. I enjoyed my stay. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The location was perfect and had many restaurants within walking distance. One of my biggest, regular complaints about Chicago area hotels is the cost of parking (which was almost $40 per night!). It's highway robbery!! Overall, I would definitely choose to stay here again if I was in the area. read more

As a Chicago local, I've recently set off on a journey, with COVID in mind, to explore this beautiful city and find the true gems. In that journey, and thanks to the recommendation of a friend, I stumbled upon The Robey. Let me tell you, after this horribly stressful week of mine- The Robey was like a breath of fresh air. From the two phone calls I had with the hotel, with Sydney and Michael, the customer service was astounding. They were knowledgable, eager to fulfill my requests, and incredibly kind. Starting on the ground floor, there's the Robey Cafe which is adjacent to the lobby and incredibly beautiful. The front desk staff, Celia, specifically, were super sweet and efficient and made sure I understood and could take advantage of every amenity my room rate included. Contrary to other reviews, I thoroughly enjoyed the customer service I received. On the second floor, there is a gorgeous mid-century modern workspace with tons of space to set up shop and hang out, while masked-up and socially distant, of course. I stayed on the 8th floor, in one of the King suites with a tub. The room itself was one of the nicer rooms I've ever stayed in. Truly incredible. And the view? was STUNNING. Watching the sunset with a glass of champagne was truly the pinnacle of my stay. In the bathroom, which was absolutely beautiful, they included a bathtub tray so that I could watch read a book while taking a bubble bath! While I personally did not check out the rooftop or the lounge, I am sure they were just as incredible. In short, I had an incredibly relaxing night and will be returning with more business, both for myself and my family/friends. The Robey is officially the go-to hotel. read more

For a quick drink and a view of the city, this is a good place to be. The rooftop is always a few hour wait (from what my local friends tell me) so we went to the 6th floor cabana bar/lounge. If you're wanting a place with a full bar & any drink you desire, this isn't your choice. However, if you're adventurous and don't mind selecting from a specific drink menu & like frozen cocktails, then this is right up your alley. I tried to order a mojito & the waiter sadly told me they couldn't make those. BUT he recommended a frozen Rosé and it was deliiiiicious. We didn't order food here but I did see a menu floating around. Seating options are trendy & modern. Very different but a good different! The point of visiting Chicago is experiencing the different scenes and styles of the city. The Robey gives you that upscale, youthful feel. If you like what you like & aren't into new things, I'd keep walking down the street until you find a sports bar with high top tables. read more

The problem is, when you charge what they charge, there should be SOME level of service and attention to detail. No one was rude, just sort of apathetic and inattentive. And having the rooftop bar be closed for private events 2 of the nights we were there seemed pretty unfortunate. Also, why are all the common areas of this hotel hotter than the hubs of hell at all times? Anyway. Great location. Lovely aesthetically. Just...a bit off. read more

I've never stayed at the hotel, only been up to the rooftop for drinks but each time I've never had to wait without a reservation. The view of the city is incredible! The outside area is standing only but there's a heated indoor hideaway known as the cove where the server will take your drink orders. I gave it 5 stars because I've always had a good experience, but their cocktails are not my favorite. I've had an espresso martini and French 75 here and they were both just average so I recommend keeping your drink order simple and poured straight from a bottle or can read more

This place has a long way to go in order to live up to the hype it creates on its website. The Robey is wedged in between an above-ground metro train and a very busy 5-way intersection, and unfortunately the windows don't stand a chance. I probably should have checked out immediately when I saw the white noise machine next to the bed -- because even with that thing on, I woke up five or six times in the night due to outside noise. The staff is disinterested at best... both for the hotel and the cafe. Since the restaurant stops serving food at 9pm and there is also no room service after that time, I ordered some dinner to be delivered from a local restaurant. I called down to the front desk to ask them to bring it up (since I was offered this option when I checked in around 9:30pm), and after being literally hung up on the first time, I was then told that it would be brought up to the room "in a while." After waiting 15 minutes, I went down myself, to find the "receptionist" scrolling through his cell phone, with my (now cold) food sitting in a bag on the counter next to him, which he then handed to me with a sheepish "oh, sorry." At breakfast, I ordered a latte, which was approximately the same temperature as the face of the sun and so bitter it was borderline undrinkable. The food itself was pretty good, but that said, sunny-side-up eggs and a fruit plate are pretty hard to get wrong. At $400+ for a "suite" -- which, to be clear, is absolutely not a suite and would be classified as a deluxe room elsewhere -- this place is a total joke. The mini-bar is "stocked" with a can of regular and diet Coke, two tiny water bottles, and some mystery beer. There are no snacks (which is an issue, seeing as room service stops at 9pm and doesn't start until 8am), nor cream for the coffee maker, so even if you want to make yourself a cup of coffee at 4:30am after finally giving up on sleep for the night, you will drink it black, or not at all. My recommendation is to spend your (or your company's) money elsewhere. Because come morning, you'll be frustrated, bleary-eyed, and wishing you'd actually stayed in a real hotel. This review is for the Cleaver Coyote on the second floor. Great space, friendly bartender. Let me say I have been enjoying Cafe Roby on the first floor since it opened so I was disappointed in the lack of quality in the food and drink at the second floor bar. I ordered a Manhattan; mediocre. My friend asked for a glass of wine, she was told there was Rose, white and red. (no menu for beer or drinks, only the food and featured cocktails). We ordered onion rings which were fantastic, and an $11 cheeseburger, (no fries) that was 'ok'. read more
