I love any night time markets. In fact, I love most things that bring heaps of people out into the public in a not entirely retail based premise. Add fairy lights and live entertainment to the mix and you've got me in your sights.
This is one of my favourite things about summer in Sydney. Suddenly, there's something on every night. Be it Shakespeare by the Sea or one of Sydney Festival's many free and paid events, Sydney turns it on during the summer. The Rocks Village Bizarre is one of those new events furthering Sydney's reputation as a summertime city.
The Bizzare involves live theatre and music, various classes and demonstrations, pop-up art exhibits and the many stalls of the Markets by Moonlight, but this event is more about the food for me than anything else. The market food stalls include Hero Sushi Box, The Fine Food Store, Gozleme, Wine Odyssey and Danieli (amongst others), providing the kind of foods that make you line up to eat on a full stomach and the kind of lines you don't mind standing in. The mingling aromas of each of these different stands add to the excitement of the anticipation and the buskers and street performers wisely positioned amongst the action makes the line both entertaining for you and financially beneficial for them.
The art element of The Rocks' Village Bizarre include extremely experimental installations, coming from the Museum of Contemporary Art and COFA's experimental art students. Whilst I didn't necessarily appreciate the onion-esque layers of meaning that I'm sure some of these works were meant to have, one I liked involved a keyboard littered with bread crumbs, waiting for the pigeons themselves to send the people an insightly message. read more
