Had a chance to visit Root the day before the eclipse for brunch. Coffee was on point - it's not often I'll drink drip coffee black, but this one passed that test for me. The place had a nice buzz going and the line was out the door. It's counter service and we luckily snagged some inside tables for our group. The Root is now a Little Rock establishment- and has been since soon after its opening. The food is fresh, the atmosphere is funky, and the staff is friendly. Their vegetarian Banh-Mi is salty and sweet and spicy. A perfect sandwich for lunch. I often crave their pimento cheeseburger. You can tell the beef is fresh. And get an order of fries. They are perfectly seasoned and that house-made ketchup is outstanding. But don't forget to also get a salad with the house dressing- which you can purchase in a bottle (and you should). I could drink that dressing. But perhaps one of my favorite items on The Root menu is their Biscuits and Gravy. The white sausage gravy is smokey and a little spicy. It is much more complex than just a simple boxed white gravy that most places serve. It is liberally ladled over two rich, tender biscuits that soak up and compliment the gravy perfectly. And THEN they top it of with an egg made the way you like- which for me is over easy. The mix of the rich, flavorful, not-too-runny gravy, with the perfect biscuits, and a runny yolk?! Come on! That is a perfect bite to me! There's a reason so many are so excited for The Root's second location to open in West Little Rock- and that a good many more of us are begging them to set up shop North of the river! read more

Fair warning: I stopped in during Sunday brunch hours. The options was there to order it vegan, but I left the house mayo on. Something on there was a bit too wet because it made quite a mess. A small side salad was included, which I appreciated. I tried a tea, which I was told was decaffeinated, which was fine by me. I don't drink tea for the caffeine, I drink it for the flavor, and theirs was aromatic and delicious. Passing through Little Rock I checked Yelp for an early dinner spot. Very glad I found the Root. I had the "Chapman's Cousin", a hamburger with ham. How can it be a hamburger without ham?? The sweet potato fries were by far the best I have ever tasted. I got a "half and half" order of fries which was way too much for one person. I'm sure the regular fries were good too, but I didn't eat more than a couple. I wish my wife had been there with me as this would have been a good meal to split for two. A huge Black Lives Matter ( so yesterday) flag thingie hangs overhead and a stop the Genocide protest flyer is taped to the window. The wife says give it a try . Big mistake . The inside was small where you ordered but they did also have a separate area for guest to sit inside Walls covered in art, but they have an area for them to sell their farmer made jelly, honey, pickled okra, dressings, etc and showed a map of their local farms. Root for the hometown cafe! This is an authentic piece of Americana in Little Rock. In an unassuming box car like structure with a surrounding patio, the Root Cafe is food for the people. They do basic things really well with fresh, locally sourced ingrediants. I had the Chicken Salad Sandwich with a side salad (included) and french fries (extra). The chicken salad was on a fresh, grilled bun. The chicken salad had a twist of turmeric flavor to liven things up. The fries were freshly cut with housemade ketchup. A simple, really good lunch. The restaurant has a left wing vibe with signs welcoming certain trendy yet controversial groups. I would prefer they just be welcoming without the extra political statements.
