For your date night - find somewhere else to spend your hard earned money such as the standard or the registry bistro in Toledo. Your dollar will go further and you will leave much more satisfied. We were disappointed and still left hungry after a ~$160 tab, before tip, for two entrees and a glass of wine each ($13 and $14 each for cloudline Pinot and stag cab). Avoid the crab cakes - shell-like stuff in literally every bite with hardly any flavor down to the aioli, small portion at $24 it is not worth your money. Unfortunately had a fishier bite that really was disappointing. This was my first time that I have ever sent a plate back, which we were comp'd for sort of - server said it was removed but the total bill was still somehow $10 or so over the cost of items ordered. The filet was $66, it was well cooked at medium rare however it was cold at the time it got to the table, the " local mushroom risotto" was more of a pilaf - not your usual savory unctuous dish, and green beans were al dente however, there were only about 10 of them. I don't mind spending money on an expensive steak but for $66 I expected a great, hot steak with well done sides. The miso sea bass was well cooked and probably the most redeeming part of the meal. The specialty cocktail list is majority vodka based. Not the "top shelf" bar experience that you'd be used to if coming from Detroit area or the registry or even Hannons block in downtown Toledo. While in the Perrysburg area, visiting family, my husband's cousin and his wife wanted to take us to their favorite restaurant. Always a fan of going out to dinner, and trying a new place, I was very excited to hear this news. We had been traveling all day with our newborn, and we were looking forward to treating ourselves. We had a reservation and we were able to be seated right away. We had a nice booth near the front of the restaurant, close to the bar. There is ample parking in front of the restaurant. I loved the fact that the chef changes the menu every day. I love variety. There were a few items that seemed like staples of the restaurant. My husband's cousin's wife says that she orders the scallops every time that she comes there because they are so delicious. That was tempting, but I did opt for the salmon. It was out of the ordinary for me as I typically won't eat salmon that is not wild caught except for when it is Scottish salmon. We got the yellow fin tuna appetizer as well as the patè. I have never tried liver patè before so it was a first for me. Although it did taste pretty game-y, I did like it more than I thought I would. My husband ordered the ribeye, but it wasn't a great cut of meat. He couldn't cut through it because the cartilage was there. He ended up sending it back and the chef totally agreed and apologized and gave him scallops on the house. We did not stay for dessert, sadly as it was getting a little late for our newborn, but we will need to go back for that. We got to try a new cocktail they had on tap that had edible glitter in it, as well as we ordered a few bottles of wine that we all shared at the table. My husband and his cousin enjoyed some martinis, and overall the service was incredible, the food was great, and the environment was perfect. The chef came over to us and talked to us about the menu, and sat down and chatted with us. The positives - Very nice atmosphere, great waitress, nice service. The not so greats - the drink was awful, the food was overcooked and bland and it's very expensive. Made a mistake and ordered a martini. I requested it very dry, so the waitress confirmed that meant no vermouth. I thought, "this place must know how to mix drinks." God was I wrong. They shook the he'll out of it. It tasted like an anemic gin spritz made with flat seltzer. One would think that a place like this would have a bartender that knew what they were doing... Why they would shake straight gin served on the rocks is beyond me. The salads arrived and they were excellent. Very well made and the tarragon dressing was A+++. A really nice, very crusty French baguette was served with the salad course. Delicious! On to the main courses... I had the grouper. The fish wasn't very fresh, it was bland and overcooked. It was made with capers (which I love). Woefully underseasoned. It was dry and taken far beyond the point of no return. Not sure if they were going for a Meuniere/Piccata and forgot to add the lemon and butter or if they just forgot about the dish altogether? I should have asked for a wedge of lemon, but not sure it would have brought redemption. The sides were some type of wild rice with a black grain or maybe wheat berries and broccolini. The rice was well cooked, but horribly bland. I have no idea what they were aiming at with this one. The broccolini was nice, but a quick saute in olive oil with shallots, garlic and lemon zest would have been welcomed. I kept using more and more salt to try to get some flavor. My dining partner had the salmon and had the same opinions. Altogether $111.00 plus the tip. Not sure what the problem is, but it seems the more the place costs, the more disappointing the food. I don't mind paying for a good meal. That said, I hate paying this much for something I could make better for 1/3 the price. Ineptitude is inexcusable when prices are this high. Learn some cooking techniques and hire a bartender that can do more than pour a glass of wine or open a beer. read more

Rose and Thistle (and a General Comment) The Rose and Thistle: There's a lot to like about this small fine dining restaurant. It's located on the main street of Perrysburg, a picturesque small town on the banks of the Maumee River. Parking is a breeze and the staff is welcoming. Despite its small-town setting, the restaurant has a city, even a NYC vibe. The room is pretty, the tables well-spaced and the décor pleasant and romantic, even. The music was well chosen and set at an appropriate volume. In all, a lovely setting. The menu is small, which is a good thing. The wine list is well-rounded and well-priced. It appears that the restaurant has rejected the unfortunate, but now common practice at fine dining venues of brutally marking up wine prices. Entrees include either a house or a Caesar salad, both nicely-sized and very good. The baguette-style bread is crusty and served warm. It, too, was very good. We had ordered two of the least expensive entrees; each was in the low mid-$40 range. One of us ordered salmon, the other scallops. Both came with similar sides--wild rice and six or so unsauced asparagus stalks; in addition, the scallops had a small amount of kernel corn and some heated sliced grape tomatoes. We were surprised at the portion size. The salmon looked like a lunch portion: a slice about 2" wide and perhaps five ounces. There were three medium/large scallops about 1.5" wide each, also perhaps five ounces. I don't expect an over-laden plate at a white tablecloth restaurant. But having paid over $40 for each dinner, I do expect appropriate portions. The Rose and Thistle is not The Bear, an "art food" Michelin star aspiring place where the portions are meticulously laid on the plate with a tweezer and the combinations are creative, even bizarre. It's a traditional American/French-inflected place. The scallops, which ought to have a slight sweetness were bland; the main taste was of salt. Saltiness also marred the salmon, primarily because the mustard-based glaze was itself salty. The wild rice was much too salty. The General Comment: The two dinners and a bottle of the least expensive--but very good--white wine plus tax came to nearly $130, with the tip, over $150. For that, we had no before-dinner drinks, appetizers, desserts, or after-dinner drinks, not even a coffee. I do the shopping for the family. I know what food costs at retail. A pound of salmon costs between $10 and $12, more if wild (though I saw no indication that the Rose and Thistle's was wild). A pound of dry U15 or 15-20 scallops--larger or about the same size as the three served--can be had at warehouse outlets for $20-24. A pound of asparagus is $3 or $4. I don't know how much wild rice costs. So how much money is on the plate? I ask because for many years, the formula for setting restaurant prices was to set the price at three times the cost of what was on the plate. The last time we ate at the Rose and Thistle was in fall, and, for example, the salmon entrée was about $30. It's now almost 50% higher and four to five times what's on the plate. Rose and Thistle isn't unique in seeming to have discarded the traditional formula in favor of a much higher multiple, but it is disappointing. Don't even get me started on the drinks... the old fashioned was watered down with awful ice and basically all syrup. The service was exemplary, attentive without hovering and the meal was paced nicely. No rush with plenty of time for conversation. However the meal was hit and miss. Hit: the escargot appetizer, Caesar Salad, the bread and the coffee. My Basil Hayden Manhattan was "unique". The color was almost black and it was very sweet. I'm guessing it was due to a very generous helping of aged cherry juice although there wasn't a cherry in the glass. A real waste of good bourbon. The entree, Beef Wellington, on the other hand was a total disappointment. The pastry was soggy and the beef was cold in addition to it being a rather skimpy portion. For $58 I expected better and more. The potato and green been sides were very good. Finally, the Creme Brulee was heavy and not at all creamy. I'm guessing it was several days old. There are only about 15 tables in the dining room so making reservations beforehand is recommended. We walked in and too the left was a beautiful bar area and we were promptly greeted by our future waitress and seated. They have a great wine list and limited menu with prices that are appropriate for the dining experience here at Rose and Thistle. We originally ate at this restaurant about 4+ years ago and had a fantastic meal. Then, they suddenly shut down. Recently, this very quaint and upscale restaurant re-opened. The Good: Perrysburg is in dire need of an uspcale, trendy, and innovative restaurant, and this new Rose & Thistle comes close, but no cigar. It's small and intimate, small bar, with no annoying TV playing sports (a mainstay in all Toledo restaurants). Nice satellite radio tunes in the background. Attracts a young and / or hip clientele. Beautifully decorated in a historic building. Nicely seared tuna with some type of mustard cream sauce; nicely steamed green beans (also covered in some type of hollandaise); and AWESOME brown rice. The Bad: I was highly disappointed to see that the new menu is not new, not innovative, very stodgy and "old." I mean, who serves shrimp cocktail and beef wellington anymore? This is a menu designed for my grandparents. I was hoping for a fresher, more innovative menu, like the one found at Revolver in Findlay perhaps. My caesar salad was inedible - extremely pungent garlic (tasted like the garlics was not fresh, but old); heavily coated in a dressing that seemed to be mayo-based. The lettuce was drowning under the heavy dressing, and the garlic burned my mouth (and I LOVE garlic). All the dishes we sampled seemed to be either under or over a heavy cream sauce. The prices were pricey for Perrysburg. We will continue to go back, simply because we like the atmosphere; because it's unique in Perrysburg; because we'll continue to HOPE they put something light, trendy, and new on the menu. read more

All others in my party were not pleased. Steak was undercooked. Very odd side dishes without pleasing tastes. Bread was good, that's about it. WHAT THE FUCK! that is not a thing.i have a perfectly valid license, and why didn't you tell me that right when I handed you the ID? she said it was because they recently got busted serving underage people. why the hell is that my problem? My Florida ID is perfectly legitimate and I'm OBVIOUSLY of age. Tried this restaurant at the suggestion of a new friend. There were many positives and a few minor negatives. The previous review by Heidi T touches on one minor negative.The menu is straight out of the eighties. Quaint, in a way. I don't know, is the food of the eighties making a comeback along with the couture? The menu definitely sported shoulder pads. THIS IS NOT A BAD REVIEW THOUGH. The other negative is the number of choices. I'm all for scaled down menus that have great food on them and I am TOTALLY over 6-8 page menus that take you so long to peruse the first time that you and the server both become annoyed by the repeated "we need a little more time" mantra. There were six apps. Shrimp cocktail was the safe one (for my wife) and I couldn't help but order the Oysters Rockefeller. I have literally not had those since the eighties! haven't even seen them on a menu in this century that I remember. There were five in our party and my wife and two people ate the shrimp. Four BIG shrimp. I'm guessing U12s. No real special presentation. Cup of cocktail in the center and the shrimp at 12-3-6 and 9. Perfectly cooked and chilled. The oysters rockefeller are a classic blast from WAY back. These were as wonderfully flavorful as they were anachronistic. Perfectly seasoned and creamy spinach with a wonderfully salty parmesan crust over barely warmed and still tender plump oysters. New friend and I enjoyed those. All apps were in the $10-$20 range. There are 8 choices for Entrees. Ribeye Steak, Filet Mignon, Beef Wellington, Scottish Salmon, Rack of Lamb, Some Chicken Breast and a couple more things (gotta write notes dangit!) I had the Welly. Again, going with the throwback menu item. I ordered it regular. The server says "the chef serves that medium rare so the pastry doesn't burn". Uh, yeah. That's REGULAR. Minor thing, but she had already made me leary when she didn't know what a Shandy was. With a menu this small and classic, the staff should be fully trained. The wellington was perfectly done. Fingerling potatoes and haricot vert likewise. My wife had a perfectly cooked filet as did our friend. Mum-in-law loved her salmon and the final diner was happy with her chicken. Both owners were very accessible, and the evening was highly enjoyable. I wouldn't come here for cutting edge faire, unless their changing menu warrants it. I recently brought my girlfriend here as part of a surprise date. The interior is a charming juxtaposition of white tablecloth and exposed brick. I wanted an intimate, candlelit, old-school setting for dinner and The Rose & Thistle delivered on that, though I was hoping for quieter surroundings; I discovered upon being seated that the regular patrons at the front bar could get pretty rowdy. When we arrived, I gave our reservation name and we were seated right away. Service was professional and courteous. Our server was also the bartender and did a commendable job keeping up with everything as the small dining area filled up for dinner. One downside: despite our best efforts at great manners and dressing to the nines, I guess something still gave us away as broke college students since we were subjected to one or two condescending remarks from the staff (ex: "Take your time ordering; you're not at Applebee's.") That plus the curious looks from the older crowd and their obviously warmer service could make us feel somewhat like awkward visitors in a locals' den. The chef did come out during the meal to ask how things were, which I always find a nice touch. My girlfriend and I share an inordinate affection for cheese plates, so we began with that. It came with a small sample of three cheeses (chef's selection) along with a couple of grapes and the typical assortment of crackers. We've had better and more generous plates in the area for a similar price, but still enjoyed it. Entrees come with a salad; my Caesar and my girlfriend's house both had great dressings and fresh ingredients. Bread was served with a tasty herbed butter. For entrees we each had the Beef Wellington, a delicate puff pastry filled with filet and foie gras. Neither of us had tried this dish before and we hugely enjoyed The Rose & Thistle's take on it. Note that the meat is cooked medium rare or even less, which happens to be exactly how we like our steak, but the undercooked beef might not be for everyone. For dessert, my girlfriend and I shared a slice of their homemade black & blueberry pie, served chilled with fresh berries inside. A little different from what we were expecting, but delicious. The steaks are cooked to perfection, with wonderful flavor, and we have tried several other dishes, and appetizers, and loved them all. It is a very small, elegant space. The service is always excellent. For the quality of the experience, I also find the prices to be quite reasonable. If there is one weakness, it is the limited menu. The restaurant needs a new sign. From the outside it looks as little run down. Inside isn't so bad. The artwork is cliche (pictures of food) but it's clean and cozy. Our waitress/hostess was pleasant. We let her help us with our wine selections and we were pleased with the pairings. (There IS a wine list!) To start, I had the clam chowder. It was smokey and creamy. The clams were not rubbery. My husband had the scallops. They had a perfect sear on the outside, a buttery texture inside. The sauce was sumptuous! He had the Caesar salad which was good, but he said the dressing bordered on being a bit too strong. My house salad was tender and i used some bread to soak up every last drop of the tangy vinaigrette. For our main courses, I had the ahi tuna & hubby tried the Beef Wellington. First time leaving any review but this place really deserved it. Atmosphere was wonderful... best steak that I've ever had in my life and I'm a big steak eater. Very reasonable drink prices. This place is a classic example of a restaurant that wants to be something that it isn't. Upon entry, I was bombarded with a demand to remove my baseball cap. I don't mind removing it when asked nicely, but this was a trashy little scold as if my mom was my waitress. Also, the menu was overpriced, boring, and sh**ty. read more

Wonderful experience...superb food and nice atmosphere. I had the Hake with asparagus that included a dab of orange infused sauce. My wife had the NY strip that was finished to perfection and was extremely tender. We also enjoyed the cheese tray as an appetizer. We will be back. read more
