The Rose may not be anywhere near as big as The Globe in terms of capacity or reputation, but it was actually built first and the theatre stages some fantastic classical productions. Although it is a functioning theatre space, it's also part dig site and if you want to stick around after a show, or pop along on a Saturday, the volunteers will quite happily talk to you at length about the excavation project. It's a really fascinating venue and should grab a spot in your list of essential things to do and see in London.
Part of The Rose is a giant expanse of water, which helps keep the venue cool. This is great for in the summer, when many off-West End venues overheat (you would be amazed how many can't afford proper air-conditioning - do support your local fringe theatre if you can). However, in winter, you will want to wrap up warm as it gets quite chilly. The volunteers will lend you a blanket if you really want one!
Drinks are very cheap, although the flipside is that if you need the toilet, you need to pop along to The Globe as there are no facilities at The Rose itself. Make sure you arrive early just in case! As well as offering refreshments, there is a small gift shop with plenty of Shakespearean trinkets for sale.
I always feel welcomed at this unique theatre and would wholeheartedly recommend it both for theatre fans and history fans. If it sways you, the seats incidentally are comfy enough - I've only heard bad things about the cheap seats at The Globe! read more
