Our party of 8, ordered 8 different items. First.....Appetizers.....FRIED MUSHROOMS! If you like mushrooms, this is a MUST....so good!!! Coconut Shrimp, steak tacos, burgers, French dip...then desserts. Best I've had. Look at the photos! All homemade. Just go for dessert if you are looking for a simple date night. My family and I went to the sand dunes over the weekend and stopped over in Alamosa for rest. The town is small and has a few restaurants and decided on the Rubi slipper since it looked very busy, so it must have been good. Their menu is extensive and has your usual American fare. The burger list is pretty extensive and I learned that The Rubi Slipper is known for their burgers, so we decided to order them. The bacon guacamole burger was pretty good but I just wish there were more seasoning in the meat. We also ordered the calamari and those were okay, but not the best I've had. They were shaped like fish sticks and not rings so that was a little disappointing. The wings there were pretty good, nothing special. Everything came out fresh and cooked to order which was great. I ate here at the recommendation of my Airbnb hostess. It did not disappoint. I was mad right away by the hostess and sad. The place is really cute service is top notch. I broke my vegetarian fast and had a steak. Other than it being a little thin, it was great. They have a tableside salad, which was new and cool. The steak was great and the shoestring french fries were good. I had the root beer cheesecake, which was ok. Sandy was our waitress and she was very friendly and made some great recommendations for dinner. We went with the Sandy Special which was 3 ground beef tacos and chili cheese fries and Margie's Special which was 3 steak and jalapeño tacos and chili cheese fries. The red sauce was our favorite and we doused our tacos in it. So, so good. We were lucky to stop right before there was a wait to get in. The ambiance was similar to a sports bar with several TV's with sports on them .. right up our alley. It wasn't too loud to be able to carry on a conversation without raise our voices. Very glad we listened to the recommendation to eat here. The menu has a big variety to choose from. Watching the chef cook was a unique experience. I knew they worked hard but I have a new level of appreciation for them. The staff were extremely attentive even if they weren't assigned to your table. My husband had a philly and curly fries and said it all had good flavor. I had the avocado tacos. They were 3 half full tacos and no sides. I was a little shocked for $13. I did order a cheese enchilada with half red and half green sauce. That was my favorite dish. I leaned more towards the red sauce size just because I have a very sensitive tongue to spice. The variety of cheesecake was astonishing. We got 1 of the 3 flight options. The pineapple and oreo were our favorite of the 4 samples. The crust all seemed to be cake or brownie. First, the wait was more than the hour quoted, and second, the burgers were average (my family each ordered a different burger, plus a Philly cheesesteak). My brother in law picked this place out and called for reservations. They said they didn't take reservations and told him to just come in. We went to the front and she asked if we made reservations and we told her the story. She said 20 to 30 minute wait. Then another family of four walked in and I told them about the wait, and he said they already made reservations. So... it wasn't a good start. The servers were very nice and got our order in before the big party. The rest of our party of four ordered different things like a burger, chicken wrap, and I ordered the cod fish and chips. I tasted the French fries from someone's plate and they were a little soggy and not that tasty. The burger and the wrap were very good according to my party. Two of us had the homemade chips.... they were lukewarm, but excellent. My fish and chips were one of the worst ones I have ever tasted from a restaurant. The outside was crunchy, the inside was moist, but in between it was doughy and mushy. It's kind of hard to explain if you've never had fish and chips before. Sometimes there's a thin layer of mushy ness, but not this much! It looked like a frozen piece of battered fish from the grocery store. I had to smother it with malt vinegar. We chose this place because our group of 4 couldn't agree on what we wanted and the menu was so diverse. We had a short wait but that only confirmed we picked the right place as they were super busy. Once seated, Julie took great care of us. She was quick and efficient. Food was out in minutes. Everything was perfectly cooked and super tasty. The fried mushrooms were huge and might be the best I have ever had at a restaurant. I had chicken enchiladas, my husband had coconut shrimp. Our friends had grilled ham and cheese and the sloppy Philly. All 4 of us were so full, but that big fat chocolate cake was calling our names so we ordered that and the fried ice cream. This is my kind of place. Creative menu of their own making. Nothing that looks like the same old fare that came out of the back of a Sysco truck. The entrees on the menu are Southwestern fare. They have burgers and sandwiches that will more than satisfy the lunch crowd. We stopped at lunchtime on a Tuesday and it was hopping. It's loud and a little raucous when it is full. I imagine it is a popular place for happy hour. We had the bacon cheesy bites appetizer which is mac 'n cheese battered and fried then covered with bacon and more melted cheese and drizzled with ranch dressing. The mac 'n cheese was fried just right. No over fried hard crunchy macaroni here. It was delicious. My wife had a plain cub sandwich (meat, bread and mayo) and tater tots which she enjoyed. I decided to take them up on the $1 fried tacos with calabracitas (sp?) for a side. They fry the taco shell before filling it and it was crunchy and pliable. No breakage with ingredients falling all over the plate. The filling is simply hamburger meat, shredded lettuce and diced tomato. They give you their homemade sauce to drizzle over it. I enjoyed every bite. The side of calabracitas was tasty as well. It is yellow squash, zucchini, green chile, onion and red pepper sautéed on the flattop. That was very good as well. Service was impeccable! We had never been here before so we took a while to peruse the menu and make our decision. Our waiter checked on us frequently and took our order when we were ready. The food came out quickly and service was attentive after that as well. Prices are very reasonable. My meal of 4 tacos and the calabracitas was $6. This place will join the select few places I have encountered while traveling that will be a must stop in the future. read more

The only problem I can find with this place is that it is over 100 miles from my home. The variety and creativity of the dishes was awesome. They definitely like their green chili which was part of the spicy reuben I had and loved. I also tried their burger and their fried tacos. All were a hit. To go along with the great food, the manager realized we were noobs and gave us a lot of great ideas for our order. Wait, here's another problem...There were too many things to try! I know our wait wasn't long but it seemed much shorter watching the staff cook Waitress was very pleasant and checked back often enough I knew we weren't ignored Menu is amazingly extensive for what they call a bar and grill. Pretty legit burger / bar to give Chili's some competition. I ordered the Eric's burger medium rare with homemade chips and even though the patty was cooked medium to medium well, it was still good. The burger consists of a hand-formed patty but it's only about 6 oz, that's my only complaint. Service was very slow even though the restaurant wasn't busy. Another negative is they didn't have any a/c on, not sure if they even had it in this old building, but it was just a little too warm while we ate. My family also ordered shoestring loaded fries with bacon, Philly with onion rings (which seemed frozen), a small mouth kids burger, a Santa fe ribeye steak (thin and not very good). The loaded fries were good and I have had very similar dish from a food truck back in Houston, but I wish they were made with their hand cut original fries, instead of the shoestring (frozen?) ones. I'll still probably be back next time I'm craving a burger when I'm in town. read more

We stumbled into The Rubi Slipper by accident. We started asking questions about the menu and were super impressed with how knowledgeable the employee was. We soon found out she is the owner! Pamela is an amazing person and all of her staff were fast and super friendly. Everything we ordered was delicious and we left the restaurant stuffed! We typically don't order dessert but today we did. I highly recommend you do the same. We had cheesecake and chocolate cake-both made from scratch and a huge portion.
