We also are one of only about 100 Certified Rug Appraisers (certified by ORRA, Oriental Rug Retailers Association) in the United States. We know the purchase of an area rug is sometimes best completed in your own home, with your furniture and your lighting. History

Established in 1980.

Terry Lewis started out his career in carpet in 1970. In 1979 while at the winter Carpet Markets in Chicago(at that time running concurrently with the International Rug Markets)Terry had finished his carpet buying and wandered up to the floor with the handmade rugs~and immediately fell in love! The craftsmanship of Oriental rugs was far different than carpet. Terry knew he HAD to open a rug store but he also knew that there was alot he didn't know about rugs. So for the next 12 months, Terry learned anything and everything he could from some of the most successful and well-run rug stores in the United States, building relationships with other retailers and vendors that endure today. In January of 1980 Terry opened up The Rug Merchant, determined that Designers and Consumers alike should have beautiful, quality rugs without having to travel to Indianapolis, Louisville or Nashville. That was 31 years ago and The Rug Merchant is STILL bringing a world beautiful rugs to the Tri-State!

Meet the Business Owner: Terry L.

Terry has owned The Rug Merchant since it opened in January of 1980. He believes in treating people fairly and giving them the best value for their money. He knows everything about the rugs he sells. Where they come from, how they are made, what they are made of. In many cases, he has been to the countries where these rugs are made and has seen the weavers in the process of making these rugs. He knows that the beauty and mystique of Oriental rugs comes from the weavers and are reflections of the countries where they are made. Terry inspects all rugs he sells to make certain that he is selling first quality goods. He has been a Certified Rug Appraiser(Certified through ORRA, the Oriental Rug Retailers Association) for the past 31 years. And now he is one of the administrators of the test! His longevity in the rug business is a testament to his trustworthiness and dedication to continually learning about the ever~changing dynamics of the rug business.
