What happened to the Bee's digital format? I used to be able to click on a whole row of department choices. Now all I get is the Bee "curated for you" which I don't want. I want to be able to skip the sports section and jump directly to Living or Advice. And I want to see the actual newspaper as published. I could click on "today's print edition." Now that's gone. Beware of the subscriptions here, even after you stop paying they will continue the subscription charges and create an outstanding balance that is significantly higher than you would expect. It's also very difficult to cancel a subscription, the website is bugged and doesn't work properly, they force you into a phone call, where they attempt to make you pay a balance you never agreed too in the first place. They will eventually send this outstanding balance to collections to further profit off of you. Very shady business tactics and disgraceful for a news paper outlet. My family has been reading the Bee since we moved to Sacramento back in the early 60's, it's always been a reputable name. Well, not anymore. The companies been sold and the customer care is non existent. Absolutely terrible! Another day that home delivery failed! Current subscription is $31 a week as they said because they lack the integrity to tell you it is $124 a month or quarterly it is $403.00. Just like their editorials and news- lacks integrity, manipulative. Called to complain and ask for delivery- over 15 minutes on hold and was told it will be delivered tomorrow. So I asked for a refund for the day. I am sure it will never come. read more

I have no issues with my delivery or carrier. It's certainly not the best newspaper by any means, but it's the only local option I have. I also get the Wall Street Journal ($70/month). My issue is with their billing. On my Nov 2025 statement for 8 weeks, I paid $112. My February 2026 statement raised to $123. My April 2026 statement raised to $145. I called and was repeatedly told by their off-shore customer service center that they only raise their rates every 6 months, and that I am getting a bargain price since their normal price is close to $260 for 8 weeks. This is getting ridiculous, I don't want to have to call them constantly to get a decent price. If this keeps up, I'm just going to cancel and stick with the Journal. read more

I have been a subscriber for over 50 yrs. My review centers around service. For many years I subscribed to the Bee and it was delivered by a neighborhood carrier. The service was very good because you could call the carrier if there was a problem with delivery. Then, once there was no carrier you had to call the Bee office re: delivery or other problems. That has not been satisfactory. I recently signed on for the Bee's online service, but I don't like it as much as the printed copy. read more

So we've been subscribers to the Sacramento Bee for over 15 years, we went electronic about 10 years ago. We paid $29.99 a month. We received an email from them last week and they informed us the price will be increasing to $53.99 a month!! They also advertised that for new subscribers an offer of $9.99 a month. So we called to complain and they tried to negotiate the price down, when we said we're canceling they said that there would be no increase!? At that point we said to cancel anyway, when they asked what it would take to keep us as subscribers we replied " give us the $9.99 a month price. Their rely was we can't....we canceled. I've been reading The Sacramento Bee for years, but lately the quality has really gone downhill. There's way too much repetitive or syndicated content, and local coverage feels thin. The website and app are overloaded with pop-ups and paywalls, which makes it frustrating to read even short articles. I still appreciate some of the investigative pieces and community focus, but overall it just doesn't feel worth the subscription anymore. read more

I like Sacramento Bee as a newspaper but I find their subscription practices to be deceptive and non-transparent. Sacramento Bee has fine print on the back of their mailed bill renewal regarding "supply chain charges" (59 cents weekly). However, they do not include it in the actual amount due. They then tell you that you owe them backpay. Why don't they just include this on the bill itself as a cost? It would create such a better consumer relationship with the publication, provide us with the appropriate cost of payment (we pay lump sum all at once), and then not have problems downstream with the subscription. read more

I canceled because of several reasons - moving out of the area, already have a subscription through another family member, and I just don't want to pay for it anymore - after I cancelled, they called me SEVEN TIMES within 24 hours to try and keep me as a customer. I understand that's part of your job, but they all just talked my ear off without giving me a chance to chime in. No matter WHAT I said, they all just keep talking. When I finally told the last person who called that I'm upset with this experience and now the main reason I don't want to subscribe is because of this RIDICULOUS customer service experience, she said okay we won't call again. Then I get 3 more missed calls. Not to mention the fact that they repeatedly called me during work hours when I TOLD THEM I'm a professional and you cannot call me during work. After reviewing the Sacramento Bee carrier a couple of years ago I decided to update. We have a 93 year-old neighbor across the street, every morning we go over at 7 o'clock and put his paper by the front door. The Bee carrier delivers his paper way down the steep driveway. This is an improvement because they do not deliver it in the water or on the grass or under a car like they did for us before we discontinued the Bee . Maybe they don't throw the newspaper anymore? Throwing it up by the garage door would be fantastic. Hopefully some of the carriers will read this review and take a little more care delivering the expensive paper. read more

Although I had to call in twice, I found both customer care agents very friendly and helpful in obtaining my cancellation and refund. Home delivery is spotty at best. We were receiving Sunday home delivery and daily eedition. We typically missed one Sunday per month. I suspect that the cause was we were the only address (out of about 20) on our street with delivery. Plus, eedition and Sunday delivery cost was $650 per year! The eedition is $215 per year, which means that we were paying about $8.50 per Sunday paper. They are running a special right now - $159.99 per year for the digital. So, when I called to cancel the Sunday paper and keep the digital, they refused to give me the special rate. They said it's for new customers only. The web site does not show that restriction. I pointed that out to the rep who responded " that's why you called us, so we could explain that to you". I feel completely ripped off. read more

Been a subscriber for over 40 years. For a long time they threw a paper onto my driveway, roof or car top. I got tired of not receiving it so I went digital. Lately I have noticed stories remaining on the page for days, something that wouldn't have happened in the print era. That led me to pay attention what I was paying for this poor work and it was $40 a month, almost $500 a year! The idiot that answered the phone said I was lucky only paying $40 a month as they just increased the weekly cost to $25. I told him to cancel my subscription and blocked any further charges in case they try to sneak one in. Sad that a paper with such a long history is being run by morons. There are simply too many sources for news on line where the content is fresh and the cost is minimal to free. read more

The Sacramento Bee's MVP marketing throw-away: yes! and inside! are a veritable plague here in Elk Grove. I have contacted them no less than 10 times via phone and email asking them to STOP delivering to my address. Each time they are apologetic and continue to claim they have taken me off their list and that it will stop. Finally (this week), they appear to have stopped delivery on one side of my property only to begin delivering to the other side of my property. The address is the SAME!!!! I have asked for management multiple times via phone and they refuse. I have asked management call me and nothing ever happens. The CITY of ELK GROVE refuses to do anything about this litter. Zero stars! Are newspapers relevant any more? This one is not for sure! While I rarely give a negative review this one needs to be written. (Take a gander at the YELP reviews. Something like 51 reviews...48-one star and 3-two star. That has to be a record!) I gleefully pulled the plug on hard copy delivery of the Sacramento Bee over a year ago. In hindsight it was unimaginable the amount of money I was paying to line my kitty's liter box! Nickel and diming it's subscribers for everything including television guide...enough was enough. One of my go to sections was Business and Finance. One day I opened the paper and poof...gone without a trace. Why eliminate something so useful! Because I enjoy the local comings and goings of the regional community...arts, dining, travel, I signed on for digital access for $20 for a year. A special promotional cost. Wow...now I had a reasonable price for what this paper was really worth:). Unfortunately, the subpar and almost non existant customer service has made this digital experience so frustrating and annoying. Most of the time the online e-edition is not working for one poor excuse after another. So I give up. When my digital subscription expires at the end of the year, needless to say, I will not renew. Quite literally the stupidest excuse for a newspaper ever. I love reading news. The Sacramento Bee falls in line with the type of newspaper I want to read. Problem: in my first month of paying for both print and digital, I received less than 25% of the days I paid for delivery. Complete no show, delivery person getting paid for no deliveries! And I am not the inly one - Nextdoor everyone confirms this is across the board for my city. If I am already a fan before subscribing and have no other local options, and they can't even deliver papers, that leaves everyone screwed (customers, writers and owners). I give them less than 2 to 3 years before they are out of business. Now I have to spend gobs more money for an out of state paper. HELLO executives at Sacramento Bee!!! - start mailing papers and charge accordingly. You are totally screwing your own business through incompetence. read more

It's painful to write this review, as we so desperately need robust local journalism, and I've appreciated the Bee's reporting since moving to Sacramento. Unfortunately, their sales and billing teams have treated us so poorly that I can't recommend anyone subscribe to the Bee. We subscribed to the Bee for a year, and when renewal time came up, they said our price would increase to triple what we were previously paying, and I said I was not interested in renewing our subscription. The Bee began calling several times a week, trying to get me to renew, and every time I refused. But they never stopped sending the paper, even though I was not signed up for auto-renewal. After several months, the Bee called to let me know that I had a past due bill... for the papers they had sent us involuntarily AFTER the end of our subscription. I let them know that we wouldn't be paying for a subscription that we'd explicitly declined to renew, I asked them not to send us any more papers, and not to contact us anymore. They have since sent this bill to collections. It's $41 -- not a huge amount of money, but I won't be giving a dime to Bee after the way we've been treated. Such a shame to the men and women who work hard reporting the news, that their outsourced sales team makes them seem like a bunch of swindlers. If they'd make it right and change their practices, we'd come back, but until then, let the buyer beware. read more

What a disaster! The Bee used to be a good source of local news and decent writing, but when the layoffs started and advertising space increased from 20-25% to well over 50%, we just couldn't hang on. National wire services comprise much of the copy, information you can get elsewhere and a whole lot faster, delivery is scant, over-priced, and in some cases nonexistent, and customer service is sketchy at best. I suggest getting a library card so you can get the Bee digitally for free and skip through the sections you know are redundant. read more

I want to support small papers and tried to subscribe for my daughter for a month-long trial on August 31. It never came. Then I discovered the newspaper had charged me for a YEAR subscription. I have emailed the customer service address about 15 times. They promise I will get a paper and then I never do. Meanwhile, I have called the 1-800- billing line now ten times since August 31 (it's now the end of October) and I have yet to be reimbursed the $208 they falsely charged me. Three times a supervisor has promised to make sure this is reimbursed, but given me a vague 7-12 day promise. Today the promise was 7-21 business days. An absolute scam of a business. I tried a $1 trial I then cancelled. I kept receiving calls from them asking me to update my billing information which I refused. They charged me full price two months in a row after cancelling. I spent days talking to support, and chatting with their customer service who kept deleting messages after sending them, telling me they "never ran a trial," and saying that SacBee had "no records" of me cancelling or of any of my calls. She finally told me my refund was going to be processed. A month later and still no refund. read more

Really appreciate the journalism of this paper, but the customer service has been a particularly negative experience. To start, I didn't realize that I had to actively cancel my subscription in order to stop services. I was getting several email reminders to "renew or else my subscription would end on Aug. 2, 2021." I ignored the emails, assuming that my service would stop if I didn't take action, as stated in the subject line and body of the email. What I didn't realize is that my subscription would automatically renew "for my convenience" - I needed to take additional steps to opt out. I only learned this information when I went back to review old reminder emails and saw that this was at the bottom in tiny, grey print. My fault for not reading the fine print, but disappointing to learn that the Bee was not clear on this policy. I finally managed to cancel my subscription, and recently received a phone call stating that about $50 was due for the additional service that will occur between my "previous subscription end date" (Aug 2, 2021) and my future end date (confirmed with cancellation). I did not feel comfortable giving out my credit card information over the phone, and asked if I could pay online. The individual confirmed that I could, but I have had a difficult time navigating the portal and don't see an option to pay what is past due online. I only see an option to pay for a future subscription, which I do not want! I am now in the process of trying to get assistance with paying my bill, but I have not been able to get through to anyone via phone, email, or Facebook, despite reaching out for several days. I don't know if the Bee is short staffed, but it's been an incredibly frustrating experience trying to cancel my subscription. In my opinion, it should not be this complicated or difficult. I also think the Bee needs to be more transparent on subscription cancellation policies. I get that it's business, but the lack of clarity was upsetting to learn. I'm sorry to give the Bee such a sad rating. I appreciate the journalists and have enjoyed reading the articles, but the cost and effort I've had to put into the subscription process has been disappointing. read more

Every single other one of them at this writing are only 1-STAR reviews. And so here I thought I was going to be the "bad guy" by leaving a 2-Star review. But I guess not. Not every paper can be a Wall Street Journal. A Reuters. Or even a NY Times. But often in the world of Cable News and Internet News, what value a Newspaper has anymore. SETUP In this instance, I'll start with the positive first: 1-Star for the History of Pulp News; and, 1-Star for being the remaining major pulp News Organ remaining in Sacramento. PULP NEWS Ever since the first Gutenburg printing press, mechanized printing started a profound awareness of the world around us, first locally, then nationally, then internationally, because the word of events - of coronations, of wars, of revolutions, of great opportunities on trans-Atlantic Tea sales, etc. - was disseminated far far more quickly AND accurately. And not only did printing increase the knowledge of the local culture, it also increased the literacy rates of the that local populace. Now that there was something that was easily accessible "to read", there was now a drive for people to become literate. In this instance, a complete & increasing synergy between publishing & readers developed. After books, came tracts & pamphlets. And soon after those, came newspapers pretty much in the form we know & appreciate today. So the "NEWS" of the day soon drove the conversations and the culture of the communities. PULP FICTION - AND THE DEMISE OF PULP NEWS PRINT People LOVE Comic Books. And I only make this odd - and what may seem like a tangential - comment, but isn't, to point out that there will ALWAYS be a market for Comic Books, and Music Scores, and even BOOKS, because people continue to make those markets bustle. In fact, in most instances, there is an INTRINSIC value in the Comic Book itself. Something that will be traded WITH VALUE, sold on eBay or Amazon WITH VALUE, between collectors, fans and the like. NOT SO with most newspapers. Once the news of the day is done, the pulp of that paper is usually the only value left, and so into the recycle bin [unless of course you are one of those Newspaper Collectors who keeps a newspaper because of the overarching historical importance of a particular headline, such as "Victory Over Japan!" or "JFK ASSASSINATED!" and/or along with some gripping picture that sends *shock & awe* through the spines of all viewers - like the picture of the ill-fated Trans-Atlantic zeppelin "HINDENBURG" that exploded in flames back in the 30s.] SURFING THE NEWS Today, the game has changed. The internet not only provides news from all around the world, it also provides it on a moment's notice, and will also continue to UPDATE news stories, and the original articles. The recent news tragedies from the Connecticut school shooting and also about that Southern California gunman cop-killer Christopher Dorner witnessed changes on the internet every few minutes. Try to swap out pulp newspapers in their coin-operated dispenser at that rate. YOU CAN'T. And I think that's the point about the obsolescence of Print Newspapers - it can't keep up. LOCAL METRICS But even with that, I don't think that Sac Bee even does a fair job when compared to the Sacramento News & Review, the one really and only competitor left on the local market - if you can even call it an even competition since the Review only comes out once a week. Still, I pick up the Review, because, YES, it's FREE, but also because I love the activities that it reports on. I don't find the same interest in the Bee. THE LOWDOWN Hey, I still have respect for the institution the Sac Bee once was, but just because I have respect - and possibly even love - for a Model T Ford or a Stearman Biplane, doesn't mean that those are going to be my primary modes of land and air travel. Sac Bee Digital Services is a Con; they get you to sign up for $1.00 to get your credit card# or bank account information then they bill month after month for services you can not access. In May 2023, I signed up for digital services for $1.00 put I was not able to see any articles/content information. I tried signing on several times but no access was given; So I sent an email asking to cancel my account. The SacBee Thieves processed two $15.99 charges on my credit card after I canceled; one for June and one for July. I called 800-284-3233 several times to get help and informed them that I had not been able to access any articles since May 2023 but all I got was a recording asking me to call back at another time because their call volume was high.
