After we booked them, Rob was so easy to work with, extremely flexible and patient with my schedule and very responsive. They helped us come up with a great format for our wedding, and even included a second line, to incorporate my southern roots. People are still talking about how unique and what a great job they did. I found a Groupon deal for a two hour recording session and snatched it up immediately. Then my son gathered a few friends and made an appointment to record a jazz tune. He made the appointment via email, which took a few back-and-forth messages to coordinate the time, but they were great to work with. The location is in a rough part of town and there's no signage from the street. To get in to the studio, you have to open a chain link gate with "no trespassing" signs all over it. But we called and confirmed, this is where we should be, and proceeded. Rowen met the group and took some time to understand the kids' goal for the session and gave suggestions on best placement and how they should record (they ended up doing it all at once rather than in sections, due to time constraints.) Trying not to be an overbearing parent, I left while they did their recording and came back at the end. They all beamed with pride as they let me listen to the recorded song. It sounded good! I'm sure there was magic in the background that I don't understand that helped contribute to the professionalism of the recording. On our way out, I ran into a friend who was here to record a commercial. It seems that Audio Inn Recording does much more than music and is a popular recording destination. We will very likely return when the kids are ready to jam and throw down another song.

We wanted to buy a violin for our daughter, but don't know much about the instrument. We went down afterschool one day and spent almost 90 minutes with Callie, who gave us an incredibly informative, brief education on violin basics. With patience and a fun, friendly vibe, she explained how each element of the instrument -- the tone, set up, the strings, the bow, even the chin rest -- matters and relates to the other parts to create a unique sound and feeling while playing. She then skillfully played scales and other pieces to compare and contrast the sounds between a dozen different violins and bows, helping us hear the nuances and subtle differences in feel between them. As we grew closer to a decision, she involved our daughter in hands-on (and ears-on) trials too. She also helped us navigate the tricky financial sides of investment and value for a musical interest we hope (but cannot be guaranteed) that our daughter will hold for some time. We invested in a beautiful, european-made 20-year-old violin that is a pleasure to hear. Our daughter has been playing non-stop since we got it, and treats it with more reverence than ANY other item in her 8 year old life. I couldn't recommend Peter Prier and sons more highly -- they gave us a great education on violins, allowed our daughter to take part in choosing a beautiful instrument, and were helpful and gracious with the pricing side of things so we could make sure to get the best violin for us for our price range. This is a shop selling well-crafted instruments; no cheap, inconsistent, stamped-out, screechy numbers here. They are instruments meant to be played and loved. I suspect that Peter Prier has made lifelong clients of us as our daughter continues to play and love her new violin.

I attended a performance of Samba Fogo at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City…read morelast Saturday night. Entitled Conexao (Connection), it was a rousing combination of Brazilian, Cuban, and Haitian music and dance. The troupe has been involved in the Salt Lake area for 25 years. Not knowing what to expect, as I have only been in Utah for a month, I was blown away by the provocative dance and exotic music. Transported to Rio de Janeiro for an hour and a half, the audience couldn't remain in their seats, and people of all ages were up clapping and dancing. It was great fun. Perhaps lacking the professionalism of a New York or London performance, yet with all local singers, dancers, and musicians, I never expected to have such Latin caliente in Salt Lake City. Bravo! More people should know about Samba Fogo and the organization should be supported and treasured by the people of Utah.

The Utah Symphony and the Utah Opera are both fantastic organizations that provide exquisite entertainment. Leo and Kennard are both excellent at finding instruments all over the world, and nearly all of my guitars have come from their shop (electrics included). If you need an old guitar or banjo repaired, these guys will either be able to do it or point you in the right direction. I can't recommend these guys enough if you are a guitar or banjo lover and are looking for a truly unique instrument.
