Unfortunately, the entrees didn't live up to the rest of the experience. The crab pasta was very bland and lacked flavor. The biggest disappointment, though, was the North Shore roast beef. As someone familiar with a true North Shore roast beef, this wasn't even close--it resembled an Arby's roast beef sandwich more than the classic, thinly sliced, rare roast beef piled high on an onion roll. The Salt Line, Washington DC (Navy Yard) Scoping out the Navy Yard, trying to find a restaurant for the six of us on the Wednesday that Bruce Springsteen was performing at Nationals Stadium, I spent the prior Sunday at The Salt Line (which is about a 10-minute walk to the stadium). I was there during brunch service and found a menu that covered a lot of bases. My main interest was seeing if they still offered fried clam bellies, a rarity in the D.C. restaurant scene. Nope, no bellies, but on offer under the brunch appetizers were Stuffies (three baked top neck clams, smoked linguica, lemon, breadcrumbs, house hot sauce, $13), along with more traditional starters, including clam chowder ($7 cup, $12 bowl), fried calamari (roasted garlic pomodoro sauce, fried cherry peppers & artichoke, lemon, $15). I ended up ordering the North Shore Roast Beef sandwich (horseradish cream, BBQ sauce, American cheese, onion roll, with fries, $19). More than enough for brunch and lunch the following day. Service was good, and the meal was excellent. Note the Salt Line's transparency, where it explains that "DC restaurants have been operating with dynamic and significant increases in labor wages, food costs, and the general cost of doing business in DC. We have chosen to implement a 4% operational surcharge - which does not go towards gratuity - as the most comprehensive way to address this." Seems to me to strike a decent balance, but I'm not all that up to date about the living wage issue in the services industry. This place has great reviews but my experience was mixed. Came for a weekday reservation around 8pm and overall it wasn't great. We weren't really checked on the entire meal and had to ask to even get water. The shrimp Caesar salad was just a complete miss for me. The shrimp itself was grilled and delicious but there were only 4, and the salad was a wilted entire head of lettuce with a very odd smoked cheese and little dressing. So disappointing. This is definitely a spot where you order seafood. All the seafood dishes were mostly good. I wasn't a fan of the shrimp and grits though. It was just a basic shrimp and grits. I didn't feel it was all the special. I ordered the fish sandwich as my main. It was okay. I wish it had more toppings in it. Maybe some more sauce would have tied the whole dish together. Outdoor seating was full, so indoor seating was offered instead, which turned out to be a comfortable and pleasant alternative. The lobster roll was flavorful, though the bun-to-lobster ratio leaned more toward bread than filling (those who know, know). It was also served cold, which was a bit unexpected. This was my first time visiting Salt Line and im a little upset about it. I enjoyed everything about this place. I came in with a couple friends while waiting to head over to the Nats game, and we ordered a bunch of apps for all of us to pick at. The only thing I felt like needs to be served with something on the side was the potatoes. The were good but could use little something to elevate them. Not my favorite meal during my week long stay in DC. Their menu is limited and mainly seafood which is normally fine for me, but I did find myself not really settling on a dish until the last server recommendation (who was great by the way) which is not common. I settled on the rockfish dish which was just OK. Definitely an Asian taste to it that wasn't my favorite. The setting is nice as it's right by the Nationals stadium. I've visited the Salt Line a few times over the years. I like the food, nautical decor, and location in Navy Yard next to the river. On my recent visit, I stopped by on a Wednesday at 6 PM. The place was pretty quiet since it was mid-week and there weren't any sports games nearby. We had some wine ($14/glass), stuffies (3 for $13), Waterman's Platter ($36), and Scallops (5 for $36). Everything was very good. The scallops were served with a nice autumnal sauce and brussel sprouts. Waterman's Platter was fried oysters, fish, baby shrimp, and scallops along with fries, onion rings, coleslaw, and dipping sauce. Everything was crispy and nicely fried. The portal was large enough to take about half as leftovers. We were celebrating a special occasion and they brought over two small glasses of sparkling wine (basically half a glass each), which was nice but also a bit tacky to not give a full glass. Like, I would rather you just verbally acknowledge it and do nothing than take a half-measure like that. We had a nice time but a few things could have been better. They were out of the beer I ordered, so I went with wine. The free sparkling was originally on our bill (and billed as a single glass) but the server realized this just before I asked about it and removed it. I was excited to get a milkshake for dessert -- they used to do massive, delicious milkshakes -- but apparently they stopped doing this about a year ago, so we passed on dessert entirely. They still have a 4% surcharge; c'mon, it's far past time to drop these. Prices overall are a bit high for fairly standard food. read more

The Salt Line is absolutely worth a visit if you're looking for great seafood and a beautiful spot on the Anacostia River. The view alone makes it special, and the staff were friendly and attentive the whole time. I had the shrimp and grits, oysters (lots of them), an oyster shooter, and a couple of their cocktails. The shrimp and grits were rich and perfectly cooked, and the oysters were fresh and briny. The oyster shooter was surprisingly delicious. The only disappointment was the Bloody Mary -- it looked amazing but tasted pretty average for the price. Still, the "Perfect Storm" version was strong and fun, even if the mix was the same. The food was good, especially the oysters, but oysters are kind of always good. The view was gorgeous, and like most spots on the DC waterfront, it's definitely on the pricey side. read more

The crab dip app was the star of the show and I really enjoyed it, but the burger was just okay in my opinion. There's a lot of good burgers in DC but the reviews swayed me to try it. Our waitress was inattentive, short, and picked up our trays when we were finishing up our fries, assuming we were done when we were just chatting and finishing up final bites. It's about a 10-minute walk from where I was, and on such a gorgeous day, I immediately liked the outdoor patio. / bar. As soon as I walked in, the customer service was fantastic. and I decided to settle into a cozy booth and ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc along with the lobster roll and a side of greens. I was torn between the buttered lobster roll and one mixed with dressing, but the server was helpful and offered to bring the dressing on the side for me to try. I went with the buttered lobster roll. When my food arrived, it looked perfect, but I did notice that the lobster was a bit over-salted that day. Something about it--either the lobster or the butter--was saltier than I'd hoped. However, the lobster itself was still really tasty, and I'm willing to chalk up the saltiness to just an off day. I plan to return and give it another shot, this time trying the lobster roll dressed and swapping the greens for a side of fries. Life is too short not to indulge, right? Overall, the great ambiance and excellent customer service really stood out to me, which is why I'm giving The Salt Line 4 stars instead of 3. It's definitely a place I'd visit again! read more

I came here after the Nats game after doing some research in the stands on where to eat. The Salt Line is right across from Nats Park and overlooks the river. It was a beautiful night with perfect weather, and it seemed like everyone, and their mamas were at the Salt Line. There were tons of baseball fans who went over after the game and the party crowd out on a Saturday night. As for the service, the host and hostess were very friendly and accommodating. We had to wait 30 minutes for a table but considering how packed the place was; it wasn't bad. Our waitress gave us great service and recommended a few dishes and came often to check on us. Very fun and lively vibes at this establishment. I had the clam chowder, Rockfish tartare and New England smash burger. The clam chowder and Rockfish tartare were the standout. I decided to walk my dog by the water on a sunny day and dropped into the outdoor bar area for something to eat since they are dog friendly. I hadn't been to The Salt Line before and was pleased by the friendliness and attentive service of the staff. The place is packed on a beautiful day so you'll have to be patient to get an outdoor spot, but if you're lucky enough to get a seat you'll be treated to great views and food. Seafood is their specialty and the menu has a great selection of fresh seasonal items as well as dockside staples. I got the Crab Roll and substituted the Crispy Brussels Sprouts for the fries for a slight but worthwhile up-charge. Strolled down to the Salt Line after leaving the Nats game. Had researched it while sitting in the stands, thought it looked like a decent spot so I gave it a try. Pros: food was really good! Tried 3 raw oysters from their availability list and then had the pan-seared scallops with tomato passata, confit eggplant, roasted zucchini, grana padano. The scallop dish was interesting. Some different herbs involved that would show up unexpectedly on the palate....but it all worked together! My waitress, Cheryl, was just attentive enough (perfect) and was able to answer all my questions. Great location, right on the river. Small menu. Cons: raw bar oysters are (on average) $4 a piece, which I think is a bit much, especially for smaller oysters. (I may be spoiled because I don't live in the big city so I'm not up on big city prices). The scallops in my scallop dish were "just" warm...like they were done well before the rest of the dish was and it all got put together. All in all it was a good meal and I'll go back on one of my upcoming Nats game trips to try something else (the burgers looked really good, and Cheryl recommends the brussel sprouts...) read more

The Salt Line is a fun and lively place on Nats game day. My friend and I sat at the outdoor bar near the water on a warm July evening. Drink service was quick since the bartenders were always moving about and serving people in close proximity. Getting the raw oysters took a bit longer from the kitchen, likely because of how busy the restaurant was that day. But when the oysters did come we were satisfied with what we chose and they tasted fresh. Salt Line is a great outdoor option to hang out along the water in Navy Yard, especially if you're in the mood for seafood. Plus, you're super close to one the least busier entry gates to Nats Park if you want to hop over before the game. If you're not going into the ballpark, they have outdoor TVs as well to watch all the action. read more

The water view is nice and for the most parts the bartenders are pretty friendly. Be careful with the orange crush, it can cause brain freeze. We grabbed a table, but it took awhile for anyone to come and take our order, so we had to flag down a server. We ended up splitting the soft shell crab, and I ordered the shrimp roll with a side of fries for my main dish. Both items were decent. The soft shell crab was a bit too oily for my liking, not sure I would order it again. Also, the service could have been better.
