We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

The decor is that of your standard Wetherspoons, with a tv on every wall. At the bar were some very loud unsavory characters, so quickly ordering a drink we tucked ourselves into a far away corner. With my partner gone I felt really unsafe. Everyone who walked passed to reach the bathroom was intimidating and loud. We were quite snacky and had briefly looked at the uninspiring menu , but after sitting there for five minutes, half expecting a glass to tumble towards us we downed our drinks and left for the Wick at Both Ends across the road. I am sure this once was a family safe and friendly bar one , but no longer. Very cheap beer and food though, but that was not enough for us to stay.

There are a great variety of real tasty locally brewed beers (many if not all of them I think are brewed in the bar itself) and the staff are incredible. Most of all the beers, cider and ales on tap were created in this shop! You can literally see all the equipment that was used around the seating area. Although they're not brewing it while you're there, it's sort of like eating in the kitchen of a restaurant. The staff there are all super cool. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights. They always recommend different drinks to what sort you like, and even let you have samples sometimes. They used to serve vegan food, but now it's only drinks and some nuts. There's also beers to take away, and sometimes they do deals with the other local FarGo vendors so keep an eye out. I've seen events going on there some nights as well like open mic night and quiz night. Some nights I go by and it's so packed there's standing room only. Other nights you can get the place to yourself. It's a bit hit or miss. But all in all if you're planning to go with a group of friends, best to send someone ahead early to snag a table with chairs. Boys beware: Not the sort of place to pick up chicks. This is usually older generation clientele who really appreciate small batch beers and a chill vibe associating with their own friends. Found it to be middling, but followed it up with the more interesting Black Diamond by Banks' Being a long term major R.E.M fan I couldn't resist going for the Lightin' Hopkins burger, named after the same blues singer as the R.E.M track. I was a little nervous given that the menu describes it as very hot and my ability to stand the heat has waned dramatically since I turned 30. However despite the deep fried red chilli, chilli paste and jalapeños present, the kick was thankfully nothing I couldn't handle.
