Such a tiny little soldier, we picked him from his home filled with so many other hamsters. A nice member of stuff took as around the store pointing out things we needed. Who knew a hamster needed so much crap? Clearly it's all a big sales pitch, because if you don't go along with it and buy everything she tells you to then you look like a cruel potential pet owner. The store is pretty big selling just about anything you need for your pet and more. It gets a little extreme in some cases, like how many different types of dog biscuits can it be? I like to look at the animals (rabbits, hamsters, mice and guinea pigs). There is a special section at the back for the eh... special animals which you can ''adopt''. I have never quite understood why they need their own section but I always feel sorry for them.

Local legend has it that there was a tunnel from the abbey to nearby Roxburgh Castle at one time there was what appeared to be a tunnel entrance on the other side of the Tweed. There is an interesting recent add on which is a Crypt for the Dukes of Roxburgh. The local War Memorial is situated along side in a very pleasant peaceful little park one of the nicest War Memorial I have seen. At my last visit it was free.

He's currently sitting next to me, snoring his head off. I defy anyone not to get a tear in their eye as they look at all the rescued cats in their pens. Its' nice to see that there are still people who will give up their time, free of charge, to give these little animals as good a life as possible.

Situated just outside of town in Bonnyrigg Lothian Cat Rescue runs a substantial service for rescuing kittens and older cats from unsafe or abusive environments, and does its very best to rehouse them. Lothian Cat Rescue is a charity and is run by volunteers. They have a small charity shop on Easter Road near Leith Walk in Edinburgh which hopefully raises a small amount for the ever costly upkeep. They do charge a small amount for rehousing but this is a more of a gesture to show you care enough and can afford to take care of the animal. Before visiting you should call them up, tell them what you're looking for (e.g. older cat, a cat that gets on with children etc.) They will ask you to come in and view the cats which are all housed in pens and receive regular daily attention. The staff will ask you questions about where you live and what your environment is like, this can seem a bit interrogation like, but I really respect the care and consideration they take into the future of their temporary guests. My girlfriend actually volunteers here, and can say from experience what a great service they provide behind the scenes. The regular feeding, attention, vet visits etc., which all come out of the rescue centre's pocket. They receive cats constantly, and there is a high turn around (they do their utmost to never put a cat down) yet they still offer very considerate attention to each individual. I really respect any people or organisation that goes out of its way to help animals, especially volunteers. So often, these charities face funding problems and are less well received than more "vital charities". Being a big cat fan aside, I have to disagree and think this job is just as necessary! The whole experience, as a customer was great. I felt so at ease leaving my pup for her first groom, she has turned out looking fantastic and so smart. I was also offered so much advice and support! Overall, lovely owners, fantastic groom and service.

Having moved to the area just last summer we had found it really difficult to find a great groomer…read morefor our Cavapoo... until we found Maude and Eddie's. Andrew is absolutely fantastic! From the initial phone call through to the end of the first groom, we felt our pup would be in very safe, very capable, highly qualified and experienced hands. We were not wrong. Not only did Andrew take the time to gather key information such as vet details and any noteworthy medical information, he also took every opportunity to ask about our expectations from the groom and the kind of cut we were looking for. Our pup usually cries the place down whenever we leave her but she didn't make a sound when we left her with Andrew. The price was very reasonable and we have paid far more for truly terrible grooms by comparison! The final cut was exactly as promised and we were delighted with the outcome. We gladly made our next appointment and booked in our Labrador for a groom too!

Vets4Pets is really, Pets At Home branching out, but as it is a veterinarians (and owned by one…read morerather than the store) versus a retail store, I feel it's worth an honourable mention. We have a hamster, who is starting to approach her later years. Her eyes are a little smaller, she can't climb stairs like the ninja of last year. Over December of last year she inadvertently set of a burglar alarm and had the police scaling my brother's house thinking there was an intruder when really, there was just lil old Pelton, rather terrified by it all. She started to lose her fur not long after that and it became time to visit the vets, to have her checked out. Luckily, Vets4Pets has a vet familiar with small rodents (didn't even think I would have had to ask that but happy days that there was one there) who, apart from calling our beloved P. cute but fat, gave us a no nonsense diagnosis and a reminder that hamsters are not long for this world. Happily, some of the more worrying possibilities do not appear to have borne out, and we still have Pelton, a little more doddery. At £25 a visit, I am not sure whether that is a competitive price or not compared to other vets, but we felt absolutely comfortable with the vet we see there.
