It's been over a month since I came to Scran and Scallie, and I'm making sure I post this review. That's how much I appreciated this venue. Came to Scotland on work travel for the first time ever. Even got to see a rugby match! I asked my coworkers from Scotland what their last meal would be if they ever had to move away from Scotland forever. They told me: Scran and Scallie. Came here on my last night in town. Walking in with no reservation, I was praying the team would seat me. Thankfully, they found space within their PACKED venue. They told me their meat pie was their bestseller so I tried it. Beautifully crisp pie crust unveiling a deliciously rich beef stew, made even more unctuous from the bone marrow provided with it. This is a phenomenal dish with phenomenal plating. I finished out the meal with the toffee cake which was so warm, sticky, and sweet. I think the toffee cake is now my favorite dessert. I would not pick a different restaurant to enjoy my last night in Scotland in. Phenomenal food steeped in local culture, and a fun, engaging staff that made my experience enjoyable. Certainly a recommendation for travelers coming to Edinburgh for the first time.

Best meal we ate in Scotland by far. Our favorites: scallops, scallops, scallops. We should've ordered three of these. Smoked salmon and pie were also delicious. The fish and chips were good, especially the chips. The local ginger beer was also fantastic. My friends said this was the best haggis of our trip. Service was fantastic.

An understated yet refined gastropub away from the "trang" of Edinburgh's old district. As much as I was ready to channel my inner Braveheart after navigating the Fringe crowds, the journey to the quieter Stockbridge district for a dinner here brought out my inner Alan Cumming (and I mean that in a good way). The restaurant offers a masterclass in underpromising and overdelivering. Both "scran" and "scallie" aren't exactly compliments. Even the menu has self-effacing plays on a Scottish accent -- "sit ye doon yer welcome." All of this in a casual fireside atmosphere that could be mistaken for a nice living room filled with tables and chairs. The joke is on us though because the food and service are refined. Fish pie had chunks of fresh seafood covered by a thick layer of well-seasoned mash. The creaminess of the hen egg complemented the crunch and earthiness of the mushrooms. The meal was well choreographed by the staff. So much so that even in this crowded restaurant we felt as if we were given center stage. Hmm -- that could be why this place won all those awards. Next time on to Leith to sample The Kitchin!

nice to get away from the touristy areas of EDI. Had a good meal with friends and enjoyed some traditional Scottish food. Restaurant has smaller more intimate rooms with few tables or a wide open space. We liked the smaller room we were brought to. A little easier for conversation. Interesting decor. Service was friendly and attentive. I'd recommend a visit if your from out of town looking for traditional food.

Little did we know when booking that this was a Michelin star restaurant - The coziest one I've ever seen! Tucked in a fantastic neighborhood of Stockbridge, lies the best Scottish fare. Everything was devoured - clean plates.

A search for a Scottish restaurant brought me to this gastropub and it was worth the walk in the rain. It is clearly super popular and busy which is a good sign. The food and service were very good. I am a fan and would happily come back.

I can see why The Scran & Scallie has a lot of rave reviews. Cocktails? On point. Food? Incredibly delicious. Ambiance? Traditional but warm and inviting. Service? Friendly, prompt and courteous. Walking in through the bar, headed to the restaurant portion, we were sat in about the middle of the room. A nice, lovely table where we could people and kitchen watch. We ordered some cocktails. I got the blood orange and my mans got an Old Fashioned. Both were incredible. I only wish I could have tried more but the length of the day was getting to us and we didn't want to over serve ourselves. I could not decide what I wanted to eat on the menu. There are so many appetizing things that it was actually very hard for me to make a decision. I really wanted that steak pie, especially when you see that bone popping out. But, we decided to start with oysters and then have a monkfish special and a steak of the day (sirloin I believe it was.) Both were great choices. I'm so happy about the amount of food versus price situation here. They could choose to charge more but I'm glad that they don't. This was the first time we ordered dessert the whole trip (that didn't come with the meal) and it was divine! The best sticky toffee I've ever had, hands down (and I may have a real recipe from a very famous celebrity chef who is known for sticky toffee.)

The best meal we had during 3 days in Edinburgh. Do have a cocktail or malt whiskey to start off, they have a good selection. The staff are helpful: if you ask them, they will help you pick out a dish that suits your taste. The main dining room is small, but comfortable. Do check out the daycare area in the back near the washrooms - nice to hear the laughter of children! Four of us came for dinner and everyone found their dishes flavorful and well-prepared. I recommend Scran and Scallie without hesitation.

A culinary experience is one of flavor and more importantly, balance. The meal preserves the Scottish traditional food, but elevate it with a touch of modernity that accentuates the balance in food. The cheesy scallops is counterbalanced by the refreshing and zesty citrus flavor that betrays tradition without being over bearing on one's tongue. The pies were also exceptionally prepared where the crusts were thin but served well in locking the flavor inside. The service was standard relative to a restaurant of a similar stature: Prompt, Professional, though somewhat distant. The dining environment was remarkably modern yet unmistakably Celtic inspired. If you are staying in Edinburgh, it's certainly a must try.

This was my first meal in Edinburgh, and one of the best. The scallops and Cauliflower starter wa wonderfully presented and delicious. The fish pie is like a warm hug for the belly. The fish was fresh and the potatoes pillowy soft.

Food was delicious. Started off with the scallops and haggis. We got the pork cheek and steak pie. Pork cheek was tender and had good flavor. Steak pie was flavorful and hearty. Perfect for a cold day. Dessert was a chocolate truffle cake. No too sweet and had a good balance of not being too heavy.

Everything here was top notch! The serve shareable plates and encouraged us to get four small plate and 2 sides but we did 2 smalls, 1 main, and a 2 sides. Plenty enough!! There was a bit of a gap in service from dinner to dessert. My husband ordered a port with dessert and that was a long time coming. And paying the bill took a while for them to bring it. Otherwise food was splendid. Perfectly seasoned. The broccoli was spot on with a tender crisp texture. Dessert was delicious. The meringue or Pavlova just melted in your mouth!

Steak pie with a side of bread and butter.
    Thomas T.

I had the steak pie with a side of bread that were both very good. I made reservations and they called me the day before to confirm. My only issue was the service. This was the first time in my life I felt unwelcome in a restaurant. It stated with seating me at probably the worst table in the restaurant. I would have let it go, but the place was empty and the seat actually smelled bad. They accommodated a table change, but all my interactions felt odd. It's hard to describe as I've never experienced this before. No one even said thank you or have a nice day when I left. They also add on an optional 12.5% gratuity. I paid it because the young lady who took my order was kind and helpful. If it was based on food, I'd be back, but I'm not going to risk ruining a good meal with a dark cloud over my head.

The desserts were good, not amazing, my friends were unsure what was in their creme brulee but it turned out to be cranachan, an odd combination! The table was split 50:50 on whether it was good or not so the verdict is still out! Overall we had a fantastic meal. Oh yea it is BYOB too which is always good ; )

Slightly creamy with the added flavors make it more than basic mash. The bacon and onion was not overpowering and complimented the haggis wonderfully. The lamb was perfect, fell off the bone with a deep rich sauce. The scotch bonnet added flavor without a lot of heat. The broccoli was perfectly steamed and still crispy. I'm not used to seeing it in blocks and our end time was bolded but not the start time. We showed up at the end time. We were charged obviously because you have to give a card for a guarantee. I get that. I was fine with it since it was my fault. What I wasn't fine with was the rude (dare I say bitchy?) hostess who I spoke with upon arriving. She was awful to me and looked at me like I was garbage. Even after that, I decided to rebook and pay attention to the time. The restaurant had been recommended to us by a relative as the "best place they had eaten" while in Edinburgh and I wanted to try it. I booked for lunch and when we arrived the male host was lovely. We were sat early (because I always show up to a reservation early) and then we waited almost a half an hour for the one waitress there to come and help. It was fine. I can understand they are understaffed and busy. But then the food, it was also just fine. It was decent but not great. Like a lot of things in the UK, it's understated and seasoned. My husband had the pappardelle and my two children and I had the flat iron steak. His pasta had zero flavor. It was a cream based sauce. It needed more salt. As for the steak, it was fine. It was cooked well. Mine was medium rare and the kids both had medium. It was also not seasoned well. However the steak was served with a dipping sauce (a garlic sauce, a peppercorn or lemon mint). We tried all three since we had three steaks and those were all good and kept the steak from being bland. On the plate were chips (fries), which were not salted well but we had the dipping sauces. Also on the plate was plain arugula and a couple on the vine cherry tomatoes. Nothing spectacular. The waitress didn't come back once the entire time we were eating. Overall, it just wasn't worth it for the money we paid.

Is it worth it though? Yes! I've sat inside and outside over the past decade, and have loved both experiences/atmospheres (the inside is very intimate, cozy, and bustling; the outside feels a little more relaxed, like you're sitting on a friend's patio). The staff (minus the host who - no matter who it is - is always super surly) is friendly and engaging. And the food? SO GOOD. You want that haggis, neeps, and tatties experience? Come here. There is literally something for everyone regardless of your dietary restrictions. The plant-based options are delish, and I can't recommend the Roasted Chestnut & Carrot Haggis with Whisky, Peppercorn, and Cream Sauce (make sure to ask for it vegan, I think it has something to do with the sauce). Also, just because it's a cute note from their menu: "For the haggis purists, the mixing of spices, tree nuts, seeds, lentils and pulses is something that has happened for centuries, meat was extremely rare in Scottish cooking." So there, stop saying veggie haggis isn't real haggis. LOADS of mash options: if you're vegan I'd go with the Wholegrain Mustard first, Olive Oil (if they have it) as a second option, or the Chilli Smoked Bean Medley as a third option (just because there's already a lot of other flavors going on). Now I just wish they had more vegan dessert options (sorbet is boring, give me a vegan sticky toffee pudding option please)!
