This was my first SeaWheeze and definitely one of the best half marathons I have done. Before the race you receive a pair of Lululemon run shorts, training guide and the electronic wristband that gets you into all the race weekend events. Everything thing at the race expo held at the Vancouver convention center was really well organized, you signed up in advance for packet pickup, store access and any other additional events. You received a backpack, water bottle, Nuun hydration tablets and Saje peppermint halo. Also available to runners were custom Wiiv insoles and a choice of either Lululemon deodorant or dry shampoo. Yoga sessions were held on the plaza outside and the expo featured speakers. On race day, runners were not assigned to specific corrals, you just chose your pace group to run with and sections started in waves. The race course itself was absolutely beautiful, running along the sea wall it was definitely the prettiest course I have done. Water stations were quite frequent and Cliff Chocolate energy gel, was offered as a gel choice. At the finish you were given a medal , Lululemon hat and a brunch box, consisting of some excellent post race food to include an Oatmeal Yogurt Parfait, Grapes and Banana Bread. Inside the main race expo vendors were still there and they offered post race PT and massage. The self guided recovery area included a foam rolling station, stationary bikes and a seating area to relax in. That evening the SeaWheeze Sunset festival was held in another beautiful location, Stanley Park. Transportation was provided from the convention center for runners and their guests. The event featured various food and drinks stalls, a post race yoga session and a concert to dance to. All in all this was a great race, all of the runners had a very positive energy and Vancouver is a wonderful city to run in. My sister came with and although she did not run she volunteered for a three hour time slot and received a Lululemon SeaWheeze shirt, brunch box and free admission to the SeaWheeze Sunset Festival.

I can't help but get excited over SeaWheeze. Last year, I didn't get in so, I volunteered. I was lucky enough to get in this year and I also volunteered. It's really tough to get in as this event sells out within 15 minutes! Lululemon puts this amazing weekend together year after year. There were 10,018 runners this year. Friday: Busy day. Lines for everything. Race packet pick-up. Meet your race beaver (pacer). Yoga. Workouts: boxing, and foam rolling. We had fun doing the workouts. Exclusive runner store from 7am-11am - people camped outside the convention center since the Wednesday before the half marathon just to get their hands on exclusive gear! That's crazy! Only to find those items overpriced on eBay - why??? Then they open the store to the public at 11am. This year, runners got an exclusive online shopping experience - we got to buy 2 items (that's the limit) you can't buy at the showcase store or anywhere. Saturday: Race day! We were at the start line by 7am. First corale started at 7:30am. My goal was to finish under 3 hours (lowered expectations due to hip and knee injuries) but lo and behold, I finished under 2 hours! There were water/ electrolyte stations, first aid stations, porta-potties, voluncheers, and people that motivate you to keep going and distract you from the pain you're feeling. Which was really nice. I need to be distracted and it's not hard to do. I loved every moment of it. The cool breeze, the beautiful scenery, the people, the music, the drag queens, the mermaids, the people on paddle boards, the band, the hippies, the T-Rexes, and the cool signs. There was one major party pooper with bad juju though who happens to be a volunteer team captain by the name of Janster who was yelling at runners and volunteers. I watched her yell at volunteers for "not doing their job" and even called security on an off-shift volunteer who was taking pictures. She should not be allowed to volunteer again if she's going to act like this. It's a fun event! After running 13.1 miles, we don't want to get yelled at. One volunteer actually called her a bitch to her face. Anyway, we got our runner swag: water, Saje goodies, sunglasses, and brunch. This year, every runner had to grab their brunch and you can't skip it. It was delicious though. We got chocolate banana bread, oatmeal with raspberry and chia, fruit, and dark chocolate. Sunset Festival: Hop on the free bus to Stanley Park. Longer lines this year. They had 2 lululemon merchandise tents, food places, beer, vendors, water station, Spin class. Yoga was about 1.5 hours long. Cold War Kids, and Young the Giant were the performers this year. I like them both but I had an early morning flight to catch so, I didn't get to stay the whole night. I'm looking forward to next year's run!

SeaWheeze is by far the best race I've entered. It's not like I've done a lot because I abhor running but I do it for the t-shirts, in this case, the shorts. For the price, you definitely get your money's worth. Shorts, drawstring bag, sunglasses, post-race brunch, and admission to their festival. Worth it!!! The run itself was absolutely gorgeous. So many scenic points so you never be bored or think you're running through miles of endless nothingness. The brisk Canadian air was also a huge factor into my running success because I've never kept that fast of a pace in my life. Speaking of pace, the Pace Beavers were awesome keeping the spirits high for their group! I felt very fortunate to be able to get registered since about 10,000 make it through each year. Not sure if I would do it again since I'm getting too old to just YOLO these long races with no training but I loved it so much that I'll probably change my mind. Well organized, great vibes, lots of perks for this race event. Two thumbs up and five stars all the way!

This is a LULULEMON sponsored race! That one race that sold out within 5 minutes of registration. I know people who barely even run & ran this just for the lululemon gear & goods. Anything for lululemon, right?! If you think you're lululemon's biggest fan... think again, you'll meet someone who will spend a grand just for their exclusive gear. This review is based on my first time running this race (not my first half marathon) for 2016 & for someone who loves lululemon but would not kill for all the gear. * Registration: For 2016's race, registration was through eventbrite & opened up registration in September 2015. I was notified through the grapevine of veteran runners who've done this race when the exact date & time to register. Let me tell you, it's such a popular race that they set up a "line" via registration site until it's your turn to sign up. It's one of those races where you HAVE to be there on the clock or else you're out of luck. I was fortunate to get in this year & felt bad for a friend who waited longer than myself that did not get in. Be fast, get your payment methods ready, & know your lululemon sizes on clothes. - Price: 128 CAD convert that to US dollars Excludes travel expenses. Book your flights a month or so after registration. That's when flights are low! - Download the SeaWheeze app! It has every information that you need for the weekend whether you're a local or new to Vancouver, Canada. * Package Pick Up: Inside the Vancouver Convention Center. This took me awhile to find because there were several other events happening in downtown. Keep an eye out for their signs that direct you here or follow the flock of runners coming out of the convention center. - Show government ID - Go first thing or "early" in the morning or late evening! It gets crowded midday. - Events include vendors, activities, & yoga throughout the day. Go get lulu-inspired by getting a fake tattoo & lulu-pampered! - If you've ran this for all 5 years then your name is engraved on the window for your lululemon history. - Got a lululemon mesh duffle bag with snacks & flyers. * SeaWheeze Showcase Store: The showcase store is also ridiculous. From knowing friends who've ran this race for years & know the ideal concept of the whole event, the tips are very helpful what to be aware of. Like this store. 2 days before race day people were CAMPING OUT just for this store. Why? Because it had all the exclusive lululemon gear that is not sold out in public lululemon stores. Race day was on Saturday, showcase store didn't open until Friday morning, & people were camping out by 2pm on Thursday. All laid out inflatable chairs, blankets, pillows, you name all the all nighter ideas. As soon as doors opened, people were running inside just to get dibs on gear. - Did I camp out for this? No! Since it was my first time in Vancouver, Canada, I'd rather experience the city with a bit of the race. I've done enough races to know how overwhelming & hectic crowds can be. But there is nothing wrong with doing ALL the activities. You just need to plan your schedule accordingly & be prepared to wait in long lines. Might as well get your $$'s worth out of the race. * Half Marathon: From downtown Vancouver through Stanley Park. Over 11km is next to the Pacific Ocean. BEAUTIFUL course! In the heart of Vancouver you can definitely breathe & smell the clean atmosphere. There were a couple "small" hills but majority of the course was flat. According to locals, this year's weather was sunny & beautiful. Few of the years it was cloudy & misty. So we hit "perfect" weather this year. - Lots of fun entertainment throughout the course! - If you're going for time, they have pace beavers! Follow the pacers to get to the finish line at your goal time. - Medal, hat, free breakfast * Sunset Festival: The festival that happens in the evening of race day. ** Don't forget to bring your own yoga mat if you plan to do yoga throughout the weekend! ** - Headliner this year was Chromeo! - Lots of vendors/local artisans selling & promoting items. - LULULEMON BEER! Don't forget to purchase one for the heck of the race. Other than lulu beer, they have other alcohol selections as well. Show your ID as you enter the festival & they give you a wristband to wear to identify you're 21+. - Food! They're selling food for your recovery needs. Don't forget to get a taste of Canada by getting POUTINE! They sold it here. * Spectators/friends: Have a family/friend who's out to support you? They sell sunset festival tickets ($38 this year) to join you on all the madness. It's worth it for someone who isn't running because they get to experience the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, & activities. After being surrounded by lululemon men & women, would I consider doing the race again? YES! Put this on your running bucket list because Vancouver, Canada itself is beautiful to experience on the pavement. * Don't forget your passport if you're from out of the country!

Ok. I made it into Seawheeze for the second year in a row and my boyfriend made it in too. This year luckily, I didn't have shingles. However, I do have plantar fasciitis in both feet. I honestly didn't really train, unless you count walking and looking for Pokemon for a few miles here and there. For those of you who think you can't do a half marathon, think again. I completed the race and walked the whole way and I wasn't last. This marathon is totally worth it. You get a waking/running tour of the city. How cool is that! Plus you got the same awesome swag for entering the half marathon and the store had even better stuff than last year. We planned better so we were able to get in quicker and not spend 5 hours at the store. And fyi to all you guys out there, they had way more men's stuff this year! I just love how positive and excited everyone is for this race. It totally pushes you and helps you forget about that 13 miles. There were tons of people cheering us on along the way...Ride Cycle who were there last year, law enforcement officers, etc. There were some hilarious signs of encouragement this year that made us smile and helped push us forward. I didn't see Ryan Gossling holding a puppy; he better be there next year! At the end of the race, we got a medal, exclusive hat, Saje pack and brunch. I still didn't make it to any of the yoga events or Sunset Festival due to other plans but they looked like a lot of fun. Hopefully, we can get in next year so I can redeem myself and try to run it.

I have to start off by declaring that this is one of the BEST best Half Marathons I have ever raced. In my short racing life, I have raced over a dozen half marathons, three marathons, and this is one of the best and one of my favorites. What made this race one the of the best: + Every participant received a pair of the special edition Sea Wheeze run shorts (you select either the Speed Shorts or the Tracker Shorts for women, men have their own selections as well) + Free yoga by amazing instructors at noon and in the evening the day before the race + Free festival at Stanley park after the race in the evening. Basically a post race party with yoga, food, drinks, music, two live bands. + Registration for this upcoming year's race sold out in 25 minutes!! + Finishers receive a trucker cap and a cool medal! The route of the race starts at Vancouver Convention Center in Downtown Vancouver. It takes you around Downtown Vancouver, around the 5 mile beautiful Stanley Park and then back to the Convention Center. Vancouver is such a clean and wonderfully diverse city. The city is bike friendly with tons if bike lanes. There is so much to eat here!! Sushi is so fresh and yummy!! Last year, I went on a bus tour of Vancouver city and learned of the history of this wonderful city. The bus also took us to Elizabeth Park, a beautiful park outside of Downtown Vancouver. This year, I shipped my bike over and road in West and North Vancouver. I rode on Marine Drive on the way to Lions Bay. This was an amazing ride (with rolling hills) in comparison to any roads in Hawaii! The day after the race, we entered the Cypress Challenge (a 8 mile charity 5,000 ft climb up Cypress Mt). This mountain was amazing!! The roads were so clean and well maintained, no potholes. I didn't even whine when climbing up the hill that much! I was too busy admiring the scenery and was amazed by the nicely paved road. I missed the fun run, yoga, party weekend in Vancouver with amazing riding. Take me back!

I was very impressed with the holiday display yesterday at the annual - Lights at Lafarge. The display surrounds the entire Lafarge Lake here in Coquitlam, not far from Coquitlam Centre Mall. Kudos to the team that put it all together! The light show was a step up from previous years & this is why I waited to do this review. An easy gentle walk around the lake, budget your time for 1 hour. Dress warm but mind you last night was a Global Warming climate comfortable experience at 10°C/50F with light rain & no breeze. I've experienced this same walk before & it had been quite chilly & heavy with rain. Lucked out too last night cause it was not crowded at all. I've tagged this event for Christmas next year. (It's actually visible from the Cambie Bridge if you are walking across it. It's practically right below the bridge, just off a bit to the side, if you're looking toward the Science Center, close to the VPD parking lot site). In truth, I had passed this structure many times before really noticing it, as it's comprised of large neon letters that spell out "SHOULD I BE WORRIED?" atop of a wooden support beam, and these wooden planks blend in with the craggy site at the shoreline here below the bridge (and of course the neon letters aren't illuminated during the daytime hours). So it's easy to miss during the day. Then, one day, I noticed the sentence atop the beams and now I am fixated on this piece whenever I pass it, when I walk on the seawall in this area between Athlete's Village and Spyglass Place, or when I cross the Cambie Bridge on foot. I keep on wondering, SHOULD I be worried? Should I? And, if so, about WHAT, exactly? There are so many possible stressors to worry about. Should I worry about them all? Prioritize them? Just deal with a few? Or perhaps not worry at all? To me, this work is both whimsical and provocative and it really makes me wonder what exactly should I be worrying about. It's simultaneously humorous and serious. It both blends in to its environment (by way of the rough, unfinished wooden support structure) and it also stands out (by way of the neon letters). In so many ways, it embodies dichotomies and contrasts. One can appreciate it at face value or one can ruminate on its possible deeper meanings. This piece was installed here fairly recently, in 2017, and the artist, Justin Langlois, is a professor and associate dean at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. He was/is concerned with many of Vancouver's social and economic issues, and his art reflects that. Should we be worried? Check out this art piece, and you tell me! *NOTE: FYI I did not take the awesome photo of this art installation; rather, it is a stock photo, found online on multiple sites (including the City of Vancouver's official site, under its public art tab, and also online in every article about this art piece). So don't think I'm such a great photographer! My photos are usually blurred, or of my hands obscuring the lens...

The shoe, melon, and dandy are clearly visible in the main square, and despite walking past the sculptures several times, I hadn't noticed the octopus, which is on the end of a bench in the main square. The dog, which is not located in the main square with the other sculptures, can easily be missed, as it's tucked around the corner beside the Dollarama. Perhaps there are more sculptures, but as far as I can tell, there are only those five. I admit, I don't quite understand these sculptures; these five items seem so unconnected, and why is the dog so far away from the other sculptures? (Also, why isn't it beside the Pet Smart store?) But it's better than no artwork (and the octopus is pretty neat), and they're fun for the kids to climb on. [Yelp collections: Public Art]

I won't get into all the possible interpretations and grad-schooleque "merging of consumerism and nature" or "metaphor of recurring consumerism" or "throwaway consumer culture" talk and just give a run-down. Located near the Georgia Viaduct, Vancouver artist Marcus Bowcott has given us a 33-foot (10 m)-high, 25,000-pound (11,340 kg) sculpture. Simply put, it's a stump of an old-growth cedar tree topped with five cars. At the top is the car that gives this sculpture its name: a 1981 Pontiac Trans Am. Then there's a BMW 7 Series, a Honda Civic, a Volkswagen Golf Mk1 Cabriolet, and a Mercedes-Benz ... all donated by a local scrapyard. While the Trans Am Totem is perfectly viewable while driving down the road, I highly recommend parking and viewing it up close and personal ... it really accentuates the experience. Its location on a grassy median where Pacific Boulevard turns into Quebec Street does not make up-close viewing ideal, but well worth the extra effort. One of great things about modern art is the capability of grand scope ... it took gigantic moving trucks to get everything here and cranes with a construction crew to get it all in place. Personally, I love it. I think it funky and odd and comical. Until fairly recently, the headlights on the uppermost vehicle lit up at night. I'm not sure why they no longer do so, but I hope the City fixes this minor issue, as this feature truly enhances the novelty of the work when viewed at nighttime. I've read a few articles about this piece in the past year. I had no idea how controversial this totem pole was; many people take offense at the use of an indigenous people's symbol (the totem pole), used in a contemporary, artsy, funky way. I guess it's not PC to use indigenous symbols in art in this way. I guess this work is polarizing (emphasis on "pole" - get it? My weak attempt at humor here!). In my opinion, any artwork worth its weight in salt elicits dialogue and conversation and debate. In this way, I think this work is successful. Another note to pass on: I read that this totem pole is going to be moved this year to another location (as yet to be decided). So if you're interested in checking this eclectic piece out, I'd recommend doing so soon before it's moved to God-knows-where.
