The pot was the first one that showed on the search and with a decent review next to it's name and only being 100 metres away from my location it was the winner (after all who wants to walk miles for breakfast!) The cafe is located in a western arcade type row of shops which was nice, as the pervious review stated it isn't your every day greasy spoon cafe but at the same time it still has that homely none chain cafe feel which was a welcome surprise. The lady behind the counter told me to grab a table and she would be over to take my order. I went with "the big one" which was everything on the breakfast menu pretty much and I did remember not to say "full English" as I was in Wales after all haha. The cafe was pretty full and everyone seemed like locals to the cafe because the staff were chatting away happily with 90% of the people that were eating in. The food was lovely and arrived on my table really quick but you could tell nothing was rushed, if I had to pick a fault and this is only me being really picky it's the bread they served with the breakfast I always go for thick bread but this was medium (told ya I was being picky). But that takes nothing away from it being a really lovely local cafe with lovely staff if your ever in Newport and need breakfast make sure you drop in. I will be going again if I'm ever in Newport or passing through :)

Very busy which makes for nice ambience even if it means you're ravenous by the time your bacon and eggs arrive (at least that means everything's cooked fresh to order.) I ordered a big breakfast which included a big mug of tea/fresh coffee for £5.50, after waiting 30 minutes for it to arrive (it was busy) the toast was perfect, nice thick white slices and not overdone, the fried eggs were also lovely and the portion of bacon, egg, black pudding, sausages, beans and tomato was enough to fill me up until the evening (and I'm a 21 year old 6' male). OK, so they can do a good fry up and a nice cup of tea, so should any half decent cafe, however they also had plenty of wholesome, home cooked dishes on the menu like steak pie and the desserts, including bread and butter pudding, were only £2; unfortunately their big breakfast had defeated me. Ok, the prices might be a bit high, but it is certainly worth it. And you can choose from an endless list or just create your own. You can also choose Soya milk for all those with lactose intolerance or the 'skinny' version (with skimmed milk) for everyone who needs to watch their figure! (me!!!) I also buy my coffee bean there and grind them myself (but you can get them grinded there). So I can enjoy a quality coffee at home. I just wish you could order it over the internet as I don't always want to drive to Newport just for some coffee.

The owner of this small cafe/deli is one of the many people running the operations behind the display counter. As you walk in the shop, you first see a little shop that sells cards and trinkets. In the far end is the display case and counter where you can order food. The other half of the restaurant is the dining area, where the food is brought to your table. The decor of this place is wonderful - quaint country cottage style theme with bright colours, simple wooden furnishing, while maintaining minimalism. Great place for a bunch of girls to meet for brunch (as was most of the clientele when we arrived for brunch before we headed out to go castle hunting for the day. The food selections are limited to sandwiches and salads as it is a cafe but they do a great job with the menu. We had: - two capuccinos - one chorizo and chicken wrap: tasted mexican and was recommended by the owner - one breakfast toastie: came with a delicious salsa The total was about 13 quid and the atmosphere makes you not want to leave. Also they have free wifi. They close at 5pm so it's not a place to have dinner. If I lived in Newport, I'd definitely be here all the time.

The drinks are always made perfect and the service is incredible. Within the second time of going there, the staff had already remembered me and were very welcoming. Their food is also good quality(for a coffee shop). The reason why im giving it four stars and not five, is there's always the same annoying people outside all day, everyday. They were friends with the staff so, of course, they have first digs on the outside seating. They don't let anybody sit down and will not move for nobody. I guess that kind of makes a dent on the business for people who want to sit outside.

We stopped here on the way from London to Pembrokeshire. It's half way and it was lunchtime and call us mad but we weren't fancying the Little Chef. A quick look online had some bizarre suggestions for good places to eat just off the M4 including a Mcdonalds and a service station where you could buy sandwiches. We needed to dig deeper. Eventually we found a write up for a small place in the Newport suburbs which didn't sound grim. The write up did it a disservice. It's an excellent place. Nestled on a residential road with bungalows and rhodedendrums everywhere, you wonder how anyone but a local would ever know about this place. Perhaps that's all they need because the place full when we got there. It's a bar/restaurant which has been done out in a sort of American pantry style, lots of whitewashed wood, all bright and airy. The menu is full of good classics, calamari, smoked mackerel pate, ham hock etc, and there's a grill section with burgers and steaks. If you ordered two courses in the right combination you could get a lunchtime deal of £12. Cue finding the most expensive things available on that deal. I had hanger steak, the missus had a fish medley and Stanley had the usual. It's fair to say my steak was nothing short of excellent. Full of flavour as that cut always is, but with the added charcoal grill charred criss cross. Very satisfying. Crispy fluffy chips accompanied and so did a juicy field mushroom and tasty grilled tomato. I chose a bernaise sauce which was unctuous and tasty, with the nice sharp vinegar reduction. The only bit of nit picking was that it wasn't quite warm enough. Didn't stop me mopping up the lot. A simple dish executed to perfection. The fish plate was a similar story. Small chunks of battered cod done perfectly, some very tasty calamari, a trout pate and some good bread to spread it on. Great stuff. Stanley's hamburger was juicy and tasty and the bun had a good glaze but was satisfyingly doughy. Buoyed by the superb mains and encouraged by the lunchtime deal we ordered a brownie and an apple crumble. Both were stupidly tasty and moreish which was lucky because the portions were generous in the extreme. It occurred to us that the people here are concentrating on keeping the food simple but executing it perfectly. Nothing is worse than a simple dish done badly. Nothing better than a simple dish made with love and care. The service was wonderfully friendly, two bright and breezy sisters who were happy to stop and chat even though the place was packed. Newport may not be the most buzzy of places but the locals are lucky to have the Ridgeway Bar and Kitchen, as good a lunchtime stop off as anywhere 150 miles east up the M4. We'll be stopping here on the way back.
