I'll tell you what - I lucked out coming to The Shave on 5th's on my first go in Greenville! The ambience When you walk in, you'll feel like gold upon entry. The barber is upstairs. You'll have to walk through the snazzy suit store in order to get there. By the way, they have some excellent quality wares you should check out. The barber sharp itself has a sort of early 1900's vibe to it. Staged whiskey display, nice quality chairs - it looks nice. The cut I've had the good fortune of seeing Cierra (spelling?) twice. Unfortunately, she is moving away; still one of the best cuts I've ever got. Great job on the fade, hitting the balance between taking care and time and not wasting the time. Cleaned up around my ears and eyebrows as well (you know as dude's get older, we grow new hair in new places...). Conversation was also pleasant. I'll be coming here exclusively from here on out! What a joke. The haircut was ok. However it don't take much to do a #2 buzz. The shave was absolutely horrible. The girl used electric trimmers to irritate my face until I finally told her to stop. I haven't used electric razors for years now because ... they irritate my face. Then she puts lather on my face and pretends to give me a "hot lather shave". If you don't know how to use a straight razor, then don't SHAVE!!! For goodness sake, don't attempt to cover it up by using an electric razor. Pathetic!!! One and done for me. read more

My first time trying this barber and I couldn't have been more pleased! The shop is cozy, clean and comfy. Michael was my barber and was fantastic. He was skilled and courteous and I was lucky that I got his chair as I had no appointment and was a walk-in. The 25 minute wait was so worth it and went by quickly as I was able to entertain myself at the billiard table. I will definitely schedule myself with Michael again. Got a 5 Star haircut from Isaac. Not really sure why this Barber Shop has a 3.7 rating, my haircut experience easily earned a 5 star rating. The haircut was relaxing with a hot shave and small head massage made the experience unique and high quality. Appointment reservation was straightforward and easy. On a previous trip to Greenville, I had noticed the store from for The Shave on Fifth, and thought it was a much needed addition to the downtown area. While I was in town on some other business and knew I would have a little downtime, I figured it would be a good time to try it out and get a haircut! The appointment process was extremely intuitive and worked very well. You can just go online and choose your services and then pick a date and time. Once you make the appointment you will get email and text reminders which both worked well. The barber shop itself is in a decent location right downtown and certainly has a nice upscale masculine feel inside. I believe it is set up to have 4 barbers, but at the time they only have two gentlemen. I had a seat and grabbed a magazine to glance at while I waited. I was also offered some coffee or soda for the wait. After a brief moment I met Mike who would be my barber. He was pleasant and asked what I was looking for and got to work. He did a very good job and was very professional. The hot cream neck shave and hot towel was certainly a nice touch. Business on this particular Saturday morning seemed to be a little slow, however I hope the will change for them. Guys in Greenville defiantly needed somewhere a little more upscale than the typical hair chains and The Shave on Fifth has done a great job providing this. I've been a customer since this place opened. First off atmosphere. Light, fun, and manly. Want a beer? Have one on the house from a great local brewery or a water or soft drink. Have yet to ever leave disappointed. Reasonably priced for the high level of service you get and the staff is great to chat with and treats you like an old friend. After another 15 she asked husband's last name (he never gave one) that's when he knew he had been overlooked. We left directly after that. What a waste of time. If you are looking for an old school barber shop that has a young trendy vibe, then hands down this is the best place to go in Greenville. It is conveniently located on 5th Street in the heart of Uptown. I've been here a handful of times since moving to the area and have been fully satisfied each time. I don't like to risk the walk-in scenario so I use the appointment feature on their website. It gives me a calendar appointment for my phone and a reminder text an hour before. I've only gone on Saturdays and there have been 3 barbers working that have a constant flow of customers from old to young. After being greeted they are prompt to offer a drink while you wait. They have Uptown Brewery on tap and also an assortment on canned Coke products and coffee. Conversation is always laid back and enjoyable. I'm impressed with their precision for detail during the haircut and neck shave with the hot towel massage. Haircuts run $20 and they accept credit cards which is a bonus. read more

This place gives a modern update to the barber shop feel without losing the old time nostalgic sense you equate with a barber shop. From the moment you walk in, the folks are extremely welcoming. They're quick to offer you a drink and take your coat. It's definitely a great experience. Each barber is well dressed and groomed himself which gives you confidence that they know what they're doing. Men's fine grooming is exactly right. You feel like you've stepped off the street into a classy, sophisticated establishment where men can get that clean, dapper look that is too often missing among men today. Chris was a great conversationalist and more than willing to provide advice on grooming products and technique. The other guys in the shop were great to chat with and it brought back great memories of my dad taking me to the barbershop on Saturdays when I was a little boy. Worst Barbershop Experience of my life! (This is a detailed review, but it is worth reading...I can assure you. If you don't feel like reading it, my advice is to never go to this barbershop plain and simple) The Review: So I went in to check out The Shave on Fifth after hearing great things about it. As soon as I stepped in I was greeted with an awesome environment. However, you don't go to a barbershop for the environment. You go for the haircut. So here's how that went... After being jokingly scolded and cursed for not making an appointment ahead of time, the man who I would assume runs the business told me he'd make an exception for me since it was my first time. He placed me with an amateur barber that had been previously fired from another barbershop in Greenville. I only knew this because it was the barbershop I attended before visiting The Shave on Fifth. This made me a little nervous, but since I didn't know why he had been fired I decided to give it a shot. After explaining for 10 minutes how I wanted my hair, WITH pictures of the hairstyle on MYSELF, the barber assured me he had it. (A messy look, with about 4 inches length on top, and a skin tight fade on the side) The cut went down and about 15 minutes later he handed me the mirror to check it out. It was the WORST fade I have ever seen in my life. The hair was not blended at all to the point where it looked like I had literal shelves/rows on my head. Then to my horror, I noticed the top had been chopped all to pieces, with only about two inches in length left. When I tell you my stomach sank, it no exaggeration sank. As a young college kid, I never really had any experience with a situation like this so I didn't know what to say. I got up and paid. On my way OUT THE DOOR, the older guy (who once again I assume runs the place) spotted my haircut, stopped me, and said "wait before you go, come over here and let me see that." He asked me if I liked it and I told him "Honestly, I can't say that I do, it's way too short and not what I had in mind." He then asked to see a picture of what I had shown the other guy. Once he saw the picture he became extremely agitated at the younger barber. He looked over to the barber, held my phone up to him, pointed to the back of my head, and said word for word "what the f*** is this bulls***?!" He then walked over to him and said "I want you to look at the picture on this kids phone, then look at his head, and tell me if you think that is even close to what he asked for." As if I, the customer didn't feel bad enough already, he decided that he would then proceed to cuss out his fellow barber for how "sh** of a job" he did. He proceeded to tell him that if he "ever f***** up like that again, he would be without a job." By this point I was ready to call it quits, but he assured me he could fix it. I will give credit to the older barber, he was able to partially clean up the cut. However, he informed me that in order to do so he would need to cut it even shorter. When I walked in that day, I had about 6 inches of length on the top and about 3 inches on the side. When I walked OUT, I had a high and tight military buzz cut. I ended up having to grow it out again for two months so that another barbershop could fix it. I have spent the past year continuously growing out my hair and recutting it, just to get it back to the shape I once had it in. Many barbers to this day tell me it was the worst haircut they had ever seen. So please, whatever you do, do not make the same mistake I did in visiting this barbershop. The lack of skill and professionalism is terrifying. I'm sure everyone has their off days, but the way that my hair was cut along with the way the situation was dealt...is extremely unacceptable. I would not trust this place around my hair if I was granted a lifetime supply of free cuts. So in conclusion, this is the worst barbershop and haircut I have ever experienced. read more

I have attended The shave on fifth roughly 10 times and it has be subpar as of recent. If you make an appointment for 4pm I suggest you show up at 4:30 because there is a 90% chance they are way behind. The previous two times I have gone, I have sat in the waiting chairs for about 40 minutes WITH AN APPOINTMENT. I thought the concept of making an appointment was to get your haircut at that time. Do NOT go on Sundays because I believe Sunday is Rookie Day. Worst haircut came from them on a Sunday afternoon I believe. Haircut is going to run you about $30 including a tip. Love the concept of the "Old School" barbershop feel that they are going for but everything else just comes up short. Would I recommend...eh if it's not busy yes. The only reason i'm leaving one star, is because there's no option to not leave any... please read before going to this joke of barber... When i usually get a haircut, i go to great clips and get whoever is available & they do a good enough job but i wanted to find a barber who i could go to consistently & i thought i found it but i was wrong..VERY WRONG. Okay so the haircut is horrible...but i'm quite angry about the fact that i showed the barber pictures of me a few months back to show them them how curly my hair should look with a good haircut, because it is very very curly and i want to keep the curls. He began the haircut buy washing my hair and proceeded cut off all the curls...brushed my hair onto my face and cut them all off...think that's it? Nope. When i showed him the pics, he said wow what product did you use to get it to curl like that?!" i told him "it curls naturally, i don't use product." Well apparently he didn't believe me so he cut a very little off, missed quite a few spots & where it is cut, it's not even. Oh yeah he also put gel in it, when i exclusively told him NOT TO because i do not need it. He then brushed it all back, leaving 2 curls hanging in the front. He also used a hot lather of some sort to cut off the little hairs on my neck opposed to just using the razor, which i'm fine with but in the process, he cut my neck & now it's bleeding real bad. The cut was also about $30...i expected a very nice cut...i did not receive even close to that. Whatever you do, DO NOT go to this barber shop. Instead save your money, go to Great Clips & walk out feeling good about your haircut & still having money left over. read more

My husband and I travel for a living and it's hard to find a good barber. Shave on fifth was recommended to us through our photographer. In town for the day. Use to come here a couple of years ago when they were only $15/20. Didn't mind the higher price now as they had good cuts when I used to go. They used to do walk ins and even have walk ins listed on Yelp, went out of my way to go in and was told they didn't accept walk ins. Wouldn't even refer me to another barber that does accept walk ins, even when I specifically said I'm just in town for the day and can't go to their one opening tomorrow.
