In general I'm quite a big fan of nautical-themed places, especially nautical-themed pubs and bars. In fact, my favourite pub in the whole wide world is nautical-themed - the brilliantly named Blue Peter IV in Hamburg. So impressed and inspired were we by the quality of such a venue in fact that my friends and I had a drink-induced epiphany during which we decided we would eventually open our open nautical-themed pub that would be amazingly fantastically good. We haven't spoken about it since, though.
The Ship & Anchor off Nevill Street in Southport is another pub with a nautical name but unlike my German dream pub, doesn't share quite the same charms.
The pub itself is quite large in size and comfortable enough, but there's just not much to shout about in terms of atmosphere really. The people in there are quite friendly but it does have quite an 'old man' feel about it which isn't great, and that's coming from a fan of 'old man' pubs too. The drinks prices are pretty cheap there and the selection isn't bad either but being sat across from the Fox & Goose and next door to O'Leary's, it probably comes in a respectable third place behind the other two in terms of the best pub to go to on Cable Street alone. read more
