    Home Video Studio - Portland

Philip at Home Video Studios was super helpful. He even picked up the original tape from my front porch, and made the delivery in time for Christmas. Unfortunately, I ran into a little bit of trouble with two of the three disks (one of the video DVDs froze at a certain point, and the data DVD wouldn't launch), but when I let them know, they very kindly burned replacements and sent them right out. I'm sure I could have taken the time to figure out how to do it myself, but the thing is: I didn't want to. I thought about how much I'd charge myself per hour, plus supplies, plus pain and suffering, and I said to myself, "Actually? No." I didn't want to have to find envelopes, stamps, or a post office to send it halfway across the country, either. I just wanted it to be easy and inexpensive. And I just wanted it to be done. Thanks to these folks, that's just what I got.

I had high hopes for working with Philip and HVS... lots of old family 8mm and Super8 home movies…read morethat I wanted to preserve to DVD. Philip is a very nice person, and made me feel comfortable leaving my treasured, original home movies with him. He suggested he work on 2 "test reels" as sample of his work, which I left with him. The results were ok. I was surprised when I took the time to go to his house (where he has his studio) and he had merely transferred the vids to DVD, but had done none of the color/light/quality correction I had been promised. I was surprised that he would have me cover over just to tell me he hadn't done THAT part yet, even though it had been a more than reasonable time, and he was trying to sell himself and his services. He did do the correction work and sent it to me later (via dropbox). The work was good quality, therefore, I chalked it up to a possible miscommunication and a mismatch of expectations and had him begin work on all my reels. He estimated it would take, at the longest, 6-8 weeks, as I was not in a hurry. However, after 8 weeks, I'd heard nothing....sent emails.... nothing. Had to begin calling often and sending more emails and finally, after another month, he responded, claiming he'd had technical problems in his studio. Long story short, there were a lot of "technical problems" over the next number of weeks, as my project was still not yet done. When it finally was finished (a lot longer than the "longest" estimated timeframe it was supposed to have been), I advised I was going to be paying by credit card (as offered by his business) when I was coming to pick up the finished product. Coincidentally, his Square Trade (or whichever "plug it into your iPhone to charge things add-on" was not working, and he asked if a check would work. Given that I was not prepared to shell out that much cash (essentially) all at once from my bank account, I told him I'd wait until he fixed his iPhone charge slider device. What do you know? It all of a sudden started working again, so I picked up my project the following morning. He claimed he was having trouble with "bad spots" and his wi-fi around his house. I'm not saying this was a less-than-honest claim, just sayin' though. When I got my project home, and finally began viewing the individual files, I was quite disappointed that about 25- 50A% of the final product was not the quality he had promised, or had demonstrated. Rather, the films appeared to have been lazily copied over, without the appropriate color correction, aspect ratio corrections, etc. I explained that, had I wanted a basic, no-correction transfer, I'd have taken the films to Walgreens or Costco, but that was not what I had contracted, and waited months for. When confronted, Philip was decent about it and promised to make it right. I just wish I hadn't had to go through all that, because I believe he DOES have the ability to do what he does very well... unfortunately, I was not the guy to cut corners with, and I was up front and honest with him about that from our first meeting. Although, in the end, I ended up with what I had contracted for, it took far more of my time and effort than I had been promised, including for being flexible along the way. Even though the final product turned out ok (and some of it very good), I cannot recommend due to excessive "miscommunications... technical difficulties" and what seemed simply like unprofessional excuses. Nice work potential, unfortunately not so nice experience.

KQAC 89.9 FM - All Classical concert hall

All Classical has shows curated by people, such as The Score. The Score - https://www.thescore.org/ - is about movie scores and the creator has special unique access to the composers. To relevance, babies and young children exposed to music are shown to have strong mathematical ability later. I visited their new studios downtown in the KOIN tower for a free Thursday afternoon guest musician live broadcast. They built a small concert hall. Thursday free concerts, register online in advance, have live musicians and an announcer introducing and narrating. The concerts are on-line for a listen for 2 weeks. I heard a piano concert, the player, described as "performer of near-superhuman technical prowess" by the NY times, knew a good friend whose father was a composer. In the same show, Storm Large, again friends of friends, sang some classical music, with a good back and forth with the announcer. The crowd ran older, as the schedule was mid-afternoon, but it would be a good day date and for elementary students on up who are interested in classical music and the particular show. That concert hall has a large LED 16 by 9 foot screen and holds 100 seated. It can be rented for concerts, recordings, dance performances, dinners, parties, workshops, conferences, and more. They have a full catering kitchen. They have a series of projects to stay relevant such as a young musician fellowship, working with local composers, and their International Children's Arts Network. They have a live camera from their old location showing the Willamette River - https://www.allclassical.org/tili-cam/ - with their music stream. And they have a good classical music calendar https://www.allclassical.org/events/ All Classical is available 24x7, has some unique programs, a gem of studios, is a gateway to the network of classical music in the region, and has weekly free concerts!

It's great to have a station dedicated entirely and exclusively to classical music. The hosts are…read morevery good--pleasant and entertaining to listen to. The biggest problem with the station, at least in the listener's opinion, is that the playlist is dominated by big, gushy, booming 19th-century symphonies. How many people actually enjoy them? To be sure, "symphonies" are for many the pinnacle of classical music. But I dare say that for many, and perhaps for most, symphonies are often predictable and uninteresting. When I turn on KQAC, I'd say at least 7 times out of 10, I turn it right back off b/c of yet another oceanic storm of sound being blasted over the airwaves. Solo pieces, chamber music, early choral music, or contemporary pieces should form a much larger part of the playlist.

I am someone who generally does not like having my photo taken because I tend to pose awkwardly (or do strange things with my face and/or arms). Ben knows how to work with people who need help in this area, in a way that is empathetic, respectful, educational, and even fun! One of his greatest talents is that he knows how to recognize and capture your authentic expressions, even in a studio environment. This is evident when you look through his portfolio. When he gives guidance on posing/angles, he walks through the "why" of each step and how even subtle changes affect the final product. He takes the time to understand what you want to portray and what you don't, and the end result is MAGIC. Other details: The studio itself is spacious and well designed. It was easy for me to get to, and not in a super crowded, loud, or busy area. Prices are straightforward and fair - there are no surprises. Another thing that I appreciated, even before the photo session, is that his website is impressive and extremely easy to navigate. Most, if not all of your questions, are likely answered on the website. You can easily book your session directly. Bonus points - he made it himself! If you want a photo of yourself that you actually love, look no further.
