There is lots and lots of seating but the place is also popular; we went once where it was hard to get seating and once when we had our pick of anywhere, so I guess on balance you might want to call ahead and reserve a table if you know you when you want to be there but also don't hesitate to just drop in on a whim. I love Thornbridge beers and with Manchester being fairly close to Buxton we really are lucky to get a lot of their varied beers in loads of different pubs around the area. Having attended their meet the brewer recently at Volta in Didsbury I was determined to go on the brewery tour while I was holidaying in nearby Tideswell. As they only do the brewery tour on a Weds it was by luck rather than judgement that I could make this and hopefully they'll start doing the tour at weekends in future so my pals can enjoy it too! The tour has limited places and is always busy so I called up a month in advance to book (it's £7.50 but you do get to pay on the day) and when we arrived on the industrial estate 10 mins walk from Buxton town centre we were greeted with a half of our choice of 4 Thornbridge beers they had on while perusing their pretty awesome shop selling a fantastic range of beers, merchandise and random awesome beer related goodies (I bought some fantastic Thornbridge / Sierra Nevada collaborations) We were taken on the tour by James (who actually did their meet the brewer a few weeks earlier) and he was knowledgable, funny and on the money with the crowd he had. A 40 mins tour of the brewery from 3.15pm had us shown around their state of the art facility, labs, bottling and kegging plant while also being able to breathe in deeply in their huge hops supply (amazing) - and then we were shown their secret project warehouse which was fully of rioja and sherry barrels which are going to be used for some very special (Brewdog Abstrakt style) beers coming your way soon! Once getting back into the main bar and reception we were then pretty much given free reign to drink as much free beer as we wanted (I'm sure there's a limit but we hadn't reached it...) before they lock the doors at 5pm! Put it this way we enjoyed some damn fine Jaipur (the best I've ever had), Raven, Tzara and a special edition called Desert Sessions. A bloody good 2 hours and I'd definitely do it again if I'm down this way again!

Also available is the same 4 beers (all bitters) in a 5ltr mini cask to take home. This is just like drinking from a bar tapits got its own built in tap and after letting it to settle at home (because of the yeast still in the beer) just vent it and drink! Brillient idea for who ever thought of it. They also sell gift packs of the bottled beer, tshirts, a glass cask flask (which is a 2ltr bottle with a pewter handle) that for £20 can be filled with beer free (the first fill only) from the bar tap and drunk back at home, then you can keep taking it back to any bar tap and have it filled up again, even your local pub. Back to the place itself, its also a fully working micro-brewery where on certain days you can watch the master brewer (Julia) and her husband (Scott) make the beer and then 2 weeks later its bottled where again you can watch. Children are allowed in accompanied. There is a more relaxed seating area upstairs with tub chairs and coffee tables some seats even overlook the brewing vessels. I know they are licensed until 11pm so are available for hire as a function facility.what a unusual place for a party, even have Julia (Master Brewer) or Scott (Brewing Engineer) giving a talk on the brewing process both in that place or the main brewery in Kings Brommley (where the cask ales are produced for the bar and the pub trade) while you have your party. Ideal for a stag or hen night? Its ideal for any function and its ideal for a relaxing drink while having a day out shopping.

It was great to go and check out Northern Monk's centre of operations, as I've rarely seen their…read morebeers west of the Pennines. The Old Flax Store where they're based is a Grade II listed mill and located in the industrial Holbeck area towards the outskirts of the city centre. Spread over three levels: their brewery on the ground floor; The Refectory and bottle shop on the first floor and event space (Chapter Hall) on the top floor, it's been lovingly restored both inside and out. Despite how separated they are from the main hub of bars and restaurants, there were quite a few people enjoying their afternoons here with a beer, hot drink or bite to eat (they serve food throughout the day). With a small selection of board games (alas, pretty much all of them had vital parts missing), I'd advise bringing your own if you fancied entertaining yourselves in this chilled out space for a while before you ventured onwards. Tip: they have a small free car park out front for the designated drivers.

Those that venture out are discerning and looking for a quality beer and great food and that's what you receive from the guys at Northern Monk and their food collaboration with Grog and Grub. The bar features 20 draught beers (not sure whether this number includes their 2 on handpump) it is about 50% their own beers and 50% guest, with this number of beers they do a good job covering a range of styles so you should not be at a loss to find something you like. In fact all the beers I had were very nice Track Sonoma, Curveball Pirate Porter, and Northern Monk Salt Lime Wit.

They cater for large groups and also offer mini tours of the brewery which is always fun and getting to sample their hard work once the tour is over. It has a more than ample outdoor seating area at the front which is great, and even though this is a small little gaff, I have never waited long to be served, even when a mass crowd of bikers turn up on mass to enjoy this little local gem.

Hidden down Kitchen Street in the heart of the Baltic Triangle, the walk to Black Lodge Brewing is…read moremore than worth it. If anything, it's part of the charm; you feel like you're discovering something new, something hardly touched or visited, when you first glimpse the small black and white sign outside. Located in a large warehouse (and as expected of a working brewery) there are very few airs and graces, the main decor being that of essential equipment and the large white tiled back bar. Three large vats of current brews is a great addition, listing the ingredients and dates they are expected to be on tap on a large chalkboard suspended from the ceiling. As the only people there when we arrived, I took the chance to have a chat with the guy simultaneously doing stock take and serving us. Although they're new, open since the beginning of December, they're stocked in couple of bars in the city (including BrewDog) and have recently launched a Mikkeller running club, an excellent way to engage with the local drinking community. I tried some of their Blackberry IPA and eventually ordered a schooner, Josh going for a South Coast Pale, which we then took over to a table. The taps were all around £3.50 per 2/3 and, although not an overpowering fruity taste, the Blackberry IPA was very refreshing with a subtle finish. They have a deck of beautifully branded playing cards on each table so we played a few hands of Karma and Rummy, paired with a few more drinks. They have a selection of cans and bottles behind the bar which they're more than happy to talk through, helping me to expand my beer knowledge with a can of Magic Rock Hire Wire Grapefruit. Tabs are taken and written on the white tiles; a simple and multi-purpose solution to this bar's requirements. We could have happily spent the whole evening here and explored the meat and cheese boards, but the pull of local exploration won. A great addition to Liverpool and hopefully we'll be seeing plenty more of them in future.
