Kind of ashamed I didn't review this place last year when we visited. So last year we were on our…read morehoneymoon and my wife's birthday was during our trip. All she wanted for her birthday was a nice afternoon tea. We left London and were basically driving sort of toward the coast just stopping wherever we found a tea shop. Unfortunately, every tea shop we hit was closed because of some bank holiday we were unaware of. Except one! We got to Glynde, parked outside this tea shop, went in, and found a large sign that said "cash only". OMG this wasn't our day. We had to go to the next town over to use the ATM which sucked, but we weren't in any hurry and we really liked the look and feel here. We came back, got seated, opened the menu, and right at the top it said afternoon tea available with reservation only. We were devastated. I saw the look in my wife's eye and there was no way I was not getting her this afternoon tea! I approached the woman working and explained our situation and before I could even fight for the experience she told me not to worry, she would get us taken care of. BLESS HER! We had a wonderful visit and would recommend the experience to everyone in the area. Fast forward to this year. I knew how much my wife loved that visit and decided to reach out and ask if they had any ideas of what I could get her for her birthday this year. Joanne reached back out with an amazing gift and shipped it to us and it amazingly arrived on her birthday! She also included a nice birthday card for her! Amazing people that went out of their way twice to make us happy. They will forever be apart of our story and hopefully we have the chance to return soon! Thank you!!!

Full of charming original features and low ceilings it's nice to get a taste of the past served up with your food. But they're not stuck in a time warp, as there is WiFi too! Hungry after a walk, I chose the All Day Breakfast which offered up two of just about everything you'd expect for only a fiver. Happy wallet too. The staff are very smiley and the service is quick. I'd love to return and try out the cream tea or sandwiches. Definitely one of Rottingdean's finest. I'm resisting the urge to make an exceedingly good Kipling pun...

The building is mostly original inside, and even I have to duck because of how low some ceilings are -- now that's REALLY exciting. I came here with a few friends one day when we decided to explore other towns near Brighton. We stumbled upon Old Cottage and went for the classic tea, scones and clotted cream ordeal to feel fabulously proper. We were without a doubt the youngest people inside, but it was so refreshing to see groups of older women gabbing away for hours instead of the rush-rush dining experience mostly found today. If I'm completely honest, the scones and cream did nothing for me. Keep in mind, I don't really like sweets and absolutely hate anything creamy, so that should be taken with a giant grain of NaCl. The atmosphere is just lovely, and if you feel like transporting yourself to the British 1800's, throw on a massive floppy hat and come to Old Cottage. The tea is quite tasty.

On arrival, we were told we could order any sandwich from the main menu (toasted or normal), choose a slice of cake from those displayed in the window, and have a choice of plain or fruit scone, served with jam and clotted cream of course! Plus a pot of tea of our choice. Even for a girl with a mighty appetite such as myself, this was a phenomenal amount of food and I had to admit defeat before even starting work on the scone (doggy bags were provided though, so no real loss!) I chose a prawn and lettuce sandwich on the most delicious thick-cut granary bread and a slice of lemon drizzle cake. The food was presented on individual cake stands and was delicious, although the cake was slightly dry on the outside. The tea room itself is in a beautiful 17th century building, all wonky floors, flint walls and dark wooden beams. Apparently it was a slaughter house up until the 1920's. It has three main rooms for eating in, plus a lovely garden that I imagine would be beautiful in the summer. As well as tea and cakes, they also do a number of main meals and serve roast dinners on a Sunday. They also have a take away counter which seemed very popular. Come here for tea, but bring with you a hearty appetite! Handy tip - if you want mobile reception and Internet, you will need to stand by the wall at the bottom of the garden with your phone in the air!

The tea was beautiful, delicious sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam plus a very good selections of divine little cakes and strawberries dipped in chocolate. We had a selection of teas to choose from, I had English breakfast tea, Susie had peppermint tea and we both got 3 cups of tea from our individual pots. The service was excellent and before we were served our cream tea we were asked by the very sweet waitress if we had any food allergies which we did not, where do you get that type of service in other establishments. We sat in the tea garden which was lovely, tables were very clean, the waterfall made you feel cool and each table had lovely large sun shades to keep you from getting to hot. I would highly recommend the tea rooms with their lovely 40's vibe and gorgeous background 40's music. Beautiful environment. It is 5 stars for eveything.

What an awesome tea room! Literally on the Thames!…read more 7 of us booked a table for brunch and were not disappointed! This is quite a big barge and seats about 20 people comfortably, offering a great range of cream teas, sandwiches, breakfasts and drinks. A little quaint, traditional barge tea shop. The cups and saucers are just fabulous and the coffee mugs are varied - all adding to the variety and experience of this wonderful place. The tea is served in leaf form so you have your own strainer, which is really cool! I opted for a full breakfast today which was just right! Unfortunately they had ran out of bacon but I got an extra sausage for that! Locally sourced food which was cooked perfectly from the kitchen you can see at the end of the barge. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, offering their advice and explaining the food options as well. The service was excellent and relaxed. The most important part of finishing the meal is the separation of the bill, especially in a group. However they offered to spilt this and each of us pay separately, this worked great! Overall, this is place is highly recommended for anytime of the day, relaxing on the Thames, in wonderful surroundings, watching the swans swim by.
