Following a recommendation from a colleague, a friend and I headed along to Sangs Thai Massage on Darling Street for an hour long massage. Told we could have 60 minutes for $60, filling those 60 minutes how we liked, we decided to fill our time slot with 30 minutes of back, neck & shoulder and 30 minutes of reflexology. When we walked through the jangling door of the shop, the staff abruptly ceased their conversation, staring blankly at us as we returned their blank looks, feeling as though we'd somehow ended up in the wrong place & were rudely interrupting. After a humorously long silence, we made our request, only to be interrupted midway through our sentence by the lady at the counter handing us their list of prices. Stuttering a little from the interruption, we asked again for what was recommended, despite it not being on the list. This was followed by extended conversation (in Thai) between four different staff members, during which my friend and I stood awkwardly at the door. After what seemed an extremely lengthy time, we received the nod and were both ushered into the same room and were told to strip down to the loose pants they handed us. From here on in, things got better. The massage was strong, performed by a mass of elbows and knees, my strong masseuse kneeling and walking over my back, legs and arms like a cat pawing at a couch. Whilst we ended up with full body massages as opposed to the back neck and shoulder we'd requested, the massage was firm and satisfying. Moved out to the front of the shop for the reflexology part of the massage, our feet were rubbed with tiger balm as we sipped on our tea and watched Deal or No Deal over the chattering of our masseuses. If you don't have a tv at home you can catch the news and get a massage at once at Sangs Thai. If this isn't a draw card for you, then the massage in itself is worth going for. They also do hot stone massage, acupuncture and sports massage.

Our two therapists were talking to each other in Thai constantly; something I've never experienced at any other parlour. However, during my massage, I had to ask multiple times for the guy to ease up on the pressure. He did not seem to know how to give a Thai massage as a good 90% of the massage was just him pressing his elbows in and grinding. Yes that's a Thai massage technique but it's not the ONLY one, and I've never felt someone grind as hard as that. After the second time I asked him to use less pressure, he made a comment to the other masseuse (in Thai) and they both laughed. I found out from my partner afterwards that he was actually badmouthing me. I am appalled that a company would allow this behaviour. The real kicker was that the massage was only 50 minutes. We started quite late; 17 minutes after our booking. Had to wait the entire time in the room so I had nothing better to do but watch the clock. However, we then ended about 5 or 6 minutes after the schedule end time; a full 10 minutes short of the 60 minutes it was supposed to last. At that point I wasn't going to try and force the issue as I wasn't happy with the massage anyway. Why ask for more of something you don't like? Unlike the karate kid, I had no Mr Miyagi with which to give me a white hot hand slap to bring my vital signs back to life. But, I soon realised that I did not need him... The all female crew at Mumsabai make Miyagi look like a first-year rookie at a TAFE massage school. As I entered I was greeted with a shy hello and asked which of the services I was interested in. I opted for a 60 minute traditional Thai massage with reflexology. I was ushered through a velvet curtain and once ready I was asked my preference of pressure. I chose hard, and I was regretting it early. The ladies might be tiny waifs but the strength in their fingers is such that they could shatter concrete like a sledgehammer. The knots in my shoulders and neck were like a sailors taut-line hitch but seasoned fingers dug them loose whilst paying particular attention to my neck and the back of my skull. The tension was such that my pain threshold exceeded excruciating and I found myself for the first time ever tapping out in a massage. I've had plenty of remedial massages in my time with burly men putting forearms through my iliotibial bands which brought laughter born of too much pain, but this was another level of pleasurable torture entirely. The foot reflexology involved a technique I had never received before. A sharp tool, like a sewing needle, was employed to extract a greater response from my body and it was perhaps the greatest foot probe I've ever endured. Once complete I thought the massage was over... but I had a final 20 minutes in store. Firstly, I was put in a position that can only be described as Sting's scorpion death lock. Unlike the wrestler's finishing move I wasn't pinned to the mat, I was lifted gracefully and effortlessly by this tiny girl right off the table and was floating in air as my back and neck had their tensions released. Returning me to the bench she finished up by interlocking her hands inside my raised arms and re-aligned my verterbrae with an expert touch. After this massage I was the Zen Master. I felt like a trillion bucks for the next 2 weeks. Highly recommended. Wish I was here right now!

She was right ---- I was in for a treat. First, there was a head and shoulder massage in a warm treatment room, while my feet were soaked in a warm foot bath. Then I moved on to the 3000 pound one-piece wood massage table where I enjoyed herbal oil massage for 45 mins. If you are looking for a massage to untie your muscle knots, this is not the place you want to come. This kind of massage is more for de-stressing your body and mind. After the massage, I did the Shirodhara - it is basically a warm steady flow of oil dripping down your forehead (your third eye?) continuously for 45 mins. It was SO relaxing ! I think I dozed off a couple of times. TIP: Make sure you do not have any appointments/ dates after the massage because you would be quite "oily" (even though you would be wiped down with warm wet towels), especially for females ! I had to wash my hair three times later that night to thorouhgly clean my oily hair !

Last week went for a massage with a Korean lady called Hana (Hannah) and the massage was so rough and hard she had no idea on how to read a customer. The massage was so hard that I was moving and jumping that she did not even ask if I was ok or if it was too hard so the massage could be adjusted. I complained to the reception and all they could do is appologise. Even the extra service she became tired and complained her arms where getting sore and in the end gave up and said time is up. Then here's the catch, don't pay by card, they slap on a 10% surcharge. I wanted my comlaint to be escalated and all they said was they are sorry and accept the feedback and Jacob the manager would return a call to me. To this day almost a week after no return call. The massage itself was so hard that I ended up with buising for days. Avoid this business, they do not care about customer service, and it appears it's about money more than professionlism.
