Tall and Small cafe on Main Street in Antigonish has a vibrant energy and is full of local art. I stopped here on the last day of my Nova Scotia trip for lunch and coffee. The staff was friendly and the split pea soup (vegetarian) was to die for. My husband had some sort of open faced grilled cheese that looked amazing. There is wifi but I could not find the password listed anywhere convenient - I think I asked another patron. Parking is either on the street or in a nearby public lot. A bustling little cafe located in the bottom of an apartment building on Main Street. They serve a variety of fair trade coffees and the best homemade vegetarian food in town. It can get pretty busy during rush hours (noon-one, five-six), but if you find yourself there during a lull it can be very relaxing. Once again Yelp comes to the rescue. Long drive home from Sydney to Halifax we needed a quick stop over for lunch and Yelp pointed us in the direction of the Tall and Small. Be warned: it's busy during lunch. That being said the turn over was pretty quick and finding a table or comfy couch to eat/hang out shouldn't be too hard. Lots of menu options: soups, salads, wraps, sandwiches, burgers and baked goods. I ordered the soup of the day: split pea and veggies. I anticipated the usual thick pea soup but what I was served was *gasp* even better. A light split pea broth with a crap ton of veggies. I was a little leery because you know split pea is well supposed to practically come with the spoon standing up in the bowl because it's so thick hence the saying "fog as thick as split pea soup" but this was really good. Not too heavy but yet hearty enough to take the cold off your bones if it's raining (as it was for us). While we were eating the line to order was super crazy long. That must be a good thing. Counter service was friendly. Prices seemed reasonable. The other plates of food I saw being served to other patrons looked pretty good. A funky little place to spend some time while you're passing through town in need of a little lunch. read more

This cafe is one of the bright spots on Antigonish's Main Street. Tucked in the bottom of a three storey building it is unassuming but definitely boasts amazing eats. The interior is simple and understated with local artisans' work for sale and display to brighten up the space. Various forms of world music are usually filling the room giving it a relaxed and zen-like ambiance. Food offerings are always full of flavour and made to order. A long time favourite of mine is the curry wrap. While it is filled with potatoes, peas and just the perfect amount of curry flavour it used to be made with rice (which I actually preferred) but is always my go-to item when ordering. It is also served with a salad and comes with an Asian inspired dressing. Also extremely tasty are the sandwiches with lots of vegetarian options. I've also sampled muffins and other baked goods and they have an extensive selection of loose teas to choose from as well as typical offerings for more caffeinated options for those wanting more of a kick. It is a local haunt for the university set and those wishing to enjoy a tasty yet real food experience. You can definitely identify every bit of food you ingest. Prices are what you'd expect for the type of food you receive and service can be a bit slow (especially at peak lunch hours) but that is a testament to the love they put into creating everything they place on a plate. Drop by if you're in the areas or if you're passing through, you won't regret it. We've dined here with two small children and they were equally as pleased with their meals. read more

This hipster cafe looks great but the service is poor. It took over thirty minutes to get a peanut butter sandwich and a salad. Even though it was lunch time, there were five staff on. But it looked like only one person appeared to be preparing food. Don't look here for a quick take out lunch. Plan to stay a while. A place to hang out. Not to eat. read more

I have been going here for years. Always busy but the atmosphere is never rushed it's relaxed and laid back. The array of backed goods looking at you while you walk to the counter are always tempting but even with you dinner and dessert you never pay ridiculous amounts. When you're finished you're full and satisfied, and I'm talking about the good kind of full not the one where you're hungry a half hour later. I think it's safe to say this is the best coffee I have ever had in my life. Latte with a shot of vanilla... to die for. Trust me when I say this, I drink at least 4 cups a day, I know my coffee. Came here from out of town because it was highly recommended from some friends. What can I say, if you've been on the other side of the causeway or travel an hour radius from this place, The Tall and Small Cafe is heaven sent and a welcome surprise. The food here is wholesome and hearty. The pace is slow. The service...meh. But, the expressos are done the way you expect them to be and there's kombucha on tap! The Tall and Small has a wonderful atmosphere and delicious food. I've been countless times. It is always fresh and well-prepared. The portions are well-sized and fairly priced. Unfortunately, the place is far too small and the service is pretty awful. It can often take upwards of twenty minutes to get a coffee during busy times and it can be uncomfortable if you're there for a while and it starts getting busy. Small and uneven tables make it cramped and frustrating. It gets romanticized in Antigonish it seems because of a perceived lack of alternatives, which is not actually fair. While this place is great, I think there are better places in town. read more

This is a charming little spot in Antigonish with delicious and healthy food. Sure it's busy at lunch and there is more of a wait but it is worth it in the end. Fantastic food. Horrible service. Really really good food. But if it is busy at all they make everyone standing, waiting in line to order, continue to wait in line while the person taking orders goes to help in the kitchen. I've waited 5 minutes at the very front of the line before the person came back to the cash to take my order. It's very frustrating, and makes me avoid the place during lunch hour. read more
