It won't make you throw your hands in the air and surrender to the Tapas Gods (for that, try Barcelona in Reston outside of DC) but you'll get a good meal.

Staff were great, happy to chat about the culture of the food (if you want to) and happy to teach some basic Spanish if you are up for the challenge. The food, well it was amazing. The choices were great, a real cross selection they also did a black rice paella (died with squid ink) only seen that in Valencia so was great to try. Taste wise everything was spot on, Spanish food cooked in a traditional way. Could have easily have been in a decent place in Spain. Price was great, even got a card for 50% off via a postcard for them to post to a friend/family member. (Or You was even allowed) Over all I honestly don't have a bad or passive word to say about the place, food, staff or prices. One of my first suggestions when people ask about anywhere to eat. MUST GO ............................... 2nd Visit - Just as amazing on the lunch time menu. BEST SPANISH FOOD IN NEWCASTLE

The décor is very up market, in keeping with the slightly top-hat and hunting pink feel to the name, almost as if it were once situated in Harrods and has been lifted up and dropped in this slightly run-down and tatty area of Whitley Bay. I must say I felt a little out of place, having popped out from home in just jeans and t-shirt, maybe next time I'll smarten up a bit first. The food was very good, I had the scallops with black pudding along side a "dieting" smoothie, my wife had a tuna and sweetcorn toasted sandwich with an Amaretto latte; when the food arrived it was almost a shame to eat it as they were works of art. Prices were slightly higher than other lunchtime places in town (normally two lunches with drinks are in the £10-15 range and this was £20). I can only think of two downsides to the visit. First, I found out after my visit that they serve a very highly rated afternoon tea and second, despite being only one of two tables in use at the time our food took almost half an hour to arrive, which felt a little excessive given the dishes ordered; perhaps we caught the kitchen out in some way. Update 29/3/2013: Visited for afternoon tea today, and it is as good as other reviewers say. First course is a plate of sandwiches (with the crusts cut off). Tuna and sweetcorn, ham a wholegrain mustard, chicken & mayo and cream cheese with cucumber. As an additional surprise the chicken appeared to have been freshly grilled as the sandwiches were warm. Second course the lightest scones we had ever eaten (apple and cinnamon) with strawberry jam and clotted cream. To finish, cakes. The red velvet cake was like a giant cupcake, avoiding the usual trap of being dry, and topped with lashings of butter-cream icing. All washed down with tea chosen from a myriad of loose-leaf green and black varieties available. All very nice and jolly civilized.

Great Cocktail Bar. Also had sharing platter with the Mrs (stopped her drinking more cocktails)…read more Loads for the money!

Red's is the best of all the BBQ restaurants in Newcastle that sprang up during the recent barbecue…read moreboom. When my husband said he fancied BBQ last Friday, I asked where, and he said "There's only one place." I think that sums it up. We've been here 3 times now, and while some items are better than others, overall the quality is good and the prices won't make you cry. Most recently, we got two barbecue trays: Brisket and burnt ends for £17, and ribs/wings for £15. Each comes with 2 normal sides or 1 fancier side. We loaded up with fries, sweet potato cornbread, slaw, Texas caviar, and mac 'n' cheese. I sipped a root beer, which was actually really good - served as a frosty mug with a can, and the root beer itself is some kind of local craft soda, which was a nice touch. I thought all of the meat was quite good, though my husband found it a little dry. To be fair, I slathered it in their delicious, sweet Kansas City style sauce - I could eat a shoe coated in that sauce - so it didn't seem dry to me. The burnt ends and ribs were particularly tender to me. The brisket was good, not as flavorful as I hoped it would be, and the wings were fine - enormous, which was fun, but I wanted a much stronger buffalo kick. I got almost no tang from them, which was a bummer because real buffalo wings should bite back, you know? The sides were a little mixed - fries yummy, Texas caviar very yummy (it's like a black eyed pea salad with veggies) and reminds me of summer picnic back in America, slaw average (I didn't try it, but my husband said it was just like supermarket stuff - bog standard), sweet potato cornbread surprisingly not-sweet but quite good, and mac 'n' cheese was uber cheesy and satisfied a craving, if it wasn't a particularly inspired spin on the dish. The atmosphere is fun and funky, and you get reliable BBQ with decent sides at a good price. I've been properly disappointed by other BBQ joints, and while this one isn't perfect, it is certainly the best in town and makes for a fun night out. If you're really hungry, they do huge sharing platters with a little bit of everything. They are a sight to behold, when that massive platter is popped down in front of you! Oh, and service could be a bit more responsive. But hey, good BBQ is hard to find outside of my home country, and I appreciate Red's devotion to the genre. Here's hoping they get even better!
