My friends and I used to go to this bar all the time and we had nothing but lovely experiences. We would play pool in the table in the back and it was our hang out spot for a couple years. Recently, the management has changed hands and with that has come the downfall of the bar Taurus. The new hired staff is incredibly rude and we've had multiple experiences where we've tried to go back and have a good time but have been met with inhospitable and snarky demeanors from the entire staff. I once asked if they would be bringing the pool table back, seeing as it was an amenity that brought in a large crowd of people to the bar, and the blonde bartender responded saying no we don't have a table in a tone implying i was stupid for even asking. Recently I went to watch the world cup and had asked the male bartender if we could spare one TV to watch the game, he responded very sarcastically that the game was on, (referring to the NBA final as if it's the only game people care about) all the time he was too busy watching the Basketball game to turn on the other TV let alone get me a drink. There has been no quality service at this bar since this management change and it's really sad to see another local grove spot being ruined by bad management and service practices. The return of a pool table would be the only thing to save this bar and being in the crowd they once had. That, and a review of healthy service practices to the entire staff. read more

The Taurus left me and my group of four disappointed. We settled at an outside table and ended up with two different servers, neither of whom seemed to know much about the menu or what we'd ordered. It got to the point where half of us were ordering inside to order drinks at the bar because service was... no bueno. We were trying to order a variety of drinks (opting for house runs and coconut shrimp and fries) and later realized that whiskey is The Taurus' bread and butter, so maybe don't skip this spot if you're looking for anything else. Very cool bar in a less populated part of the Grove. It's one of the oldest bars in Miami and has a very local Florida feel. Inside you can sot at the bar or at one of the window high tables. There are tables out front, but there is also a back patio with a pool table. There seems to always be something going on here. On Thursdays they have free comedy shows with tons of performers starting a little after 8 pm. When I went, some were better than others, but there are different people every week and it's cool to see comedians at different levels trying out material in this intimate setting. The beer selection is great and there are also some good bar bites. I recommend the fried cheese bits with spicy guava sauce. read more

How have I not noticed the historical significance of this establishment? I pride myself on knowing ALL the hidden gems and yet this one missed me. Like me you probably walk on by However, this spot should be loved and appreciated. It has sadly been on the chopping block SO many times, it is sad. This is a gem of old begone days. The structure is all wood, cozy, historical and intimate. They even have a stone fireplace. God help us if this goes the way The old Playhouse has, and gets abandoned, derelict or knocked down. In its time it has been various things - a cottage, a tearoom and gift shop, a tearoom, a steak restaurant and now a pub! Here is some history about the place - It was originally built as a cottage in 1920, as part of the estate of The barnacle, owned by the Coconut Grove pioneer Ralph Munroe (1851 - 1933). He built it to be used as a social club and he called it The Tea Chest. From 1921 to 1923, it operated as such and was run by Munroe's daughter Patty (1900 - 1991) and Alice Ayars, a ceramicist. It was also known as Patty's Tea-chest and gift shop. Then two years later in 1923 it operated as La Casita Tea Room & Gift shop and was owned by Grace and Bob Ousley. They were known for their ice box pudding. This establishment ran for decades and apparently used to serve liquor in fine China teacups during Prohibition. It was also known for their Southern style cooking. In 1969 it was sold again and opened up as The Taurus Steakhouse, offering steaks of course. According to my research an older Coconut Grove female local said Taurus was once known as Coconut Grove's most legendary and oldest watering hole. She remembers the place when it was new, when the bar was wood and covered in an inch of clear polyurethane, when people played backgammon in a room at the rear and when she would make spiral designs with a credit card in the little piles of white powder on the bar after hours. Apparently, these indulgences happened in the 1970's. Boy, if these walls could talk! So? I went in for a gander and ended up chatting to the knowledgeable Scot who works there. He said there are various rooms under the wooden structure. He told me even to this day he has some people coming in asking for the steak! They now deal mainly in pints, trivia nights and have stand-up comedy nights on Thursdays. Surely now I have piqued your interest. Worst service. They took my $40 dollar bourbon pour before I was done. The woke waitress told me it wasn't her fault she took a drink that wasn't finished. Bar manager too scared to provide good customer service and make things right. I paid my bill and will never return. To come insult you after they admitted guilt was the worst experience I've had. I gave this bar two chances and regretted both. The bartenders were consistently rude and unprofessional. The first time, I was refused service because they wouldn't accept my passport as valid ID. The second time, the bartender was visibly annoyed that the bar was busy and skipped over us while ordering simply because we asked what beers were available. I won't be back. The Taurus used to be called the Taurus Steakhouse in the 70s. People would come here for top quality meat selections seared and prepared to perfection. Fast-forward 50 years and this place is practically a dive bar. TV screens everywhere, very loud, mediocre food menu.Mostly beers and deep fried stuff. We didn't order anything, so I can't comment on the service but if you just wanna get drunk and then party on that and coconut Grove, this is probably an OK place. Sorry, no pics. Taurus brands themselves as the best trivia night in Miami and based on my experience so far this is actually true. The vibe is fun and divey and the food is good, plus the trivia is challenging and fun. Makes for a nice night all around! Trivia is on Tuesdays. We didn't get there early enough and had to sit at the bar but it was fine. They have a fun mix of audio rounds, buzzer rounds, video rounds, and the like. It's honestly pretty competitive and hard but in a really fun way. Not a ton of vegetarian options on the menu but we enjoyed our dinner. The pineapple pizza was quite good and the chocolate dessert we had was delicious. Much better than I expected given the divey vibes. I believe they also have happy hour offerings but you need to get there a little early. read more

As a Miami native, I have no idea how I'd never been to this spot, but I'd been curious to try Masa Craft's dishes and decided to check them out. I arrived with my group during happy hour around 5:45 and at first glance this place was cozy with a fireplace going and plenty of seating - I could really sense the age of the building (probably in part due to the slight essence of ammonia cleaning products). There were tv's playing college sports at a low volume and a somewhat decent playlist going. The waiters had a contemptuous vibe but were attentive. The Masa Craft dishes did not disappoint - the lumpia was perfection!! However, the service transition once it hit 7 pm was massively off-putting. The music stopped and the games were full volume. The new waiter forgot to bring my drink and I'd see them coming around with this look like they remembered but hoped I had forgotten. They then gave a friend trouble for not getting her second round of HH drinks that she was owed which was buy one get one. The waiter said "you had to order your second before it turned 7", but it's just bad service to not honor the promotion. Whatever the case, they did not make it implicitly clear beforehand that the second drink needed to be ordered by the end of happy hour. From what my group experienced, I likely wouldn't return due to the attitude of the staff, but I would definitely go to another pop-up for Masa Craft if they opened elsewhere. I'd say order takeout if you can and save yourself the unpleasant treatment. Side note: There are signs everywhere regarding ID's and they seem to be very strict about it so don't forget your wallet at home! read more

Known as the oldest establishment, I was looking forward to coming here. Never again. Were here with my friend and left kinda dissapointed. Our waitress was a complete airhead who had zero care for our order. After waiting 40 minutes for 3 beers, we saw her sitting inside watching a football game...had to ask several times for our drinks. Then when we asked for dessert, she said kitchen was closed and closed at 10. We never knew that and she said, "The other server asked if you needed anything." Sorry. We don't read minds. i've never been to taurus before. i came for the food, masa craft. i am a loyal follower of the delicious food these guys make. i came here to support them on their first night out. i wish i could order everything off the menu, i've had everything numerous times throughout their other pop-ups and different locations. i dont drink but im gonna order a la tropical beer. their croquettes are the best in miami. their wings are brutally good. their cheesesteaks are my favorite and these guys serve my favorite burger i've ever had. everyone should finish off their meal with their dessert ridiculously good unfortunately, the cheesesteak did not last enough time to take a photo. i can't wait to come back and bring my family. read more

The pandemic most certainly cannot keep folks from supporting local businesses and enjoying cocktails. I have loved Taurus as one of Miami's longest standing no-frills watering holes for decades, and now I am happy to report they are offering curbside happy hour. I visited over the weekend and enjoyed a punch, and a few beers. The folks working the bar are safe, and they also are very strict when it comes to making sure folks follow the rules they put in place to maintain proper social distancing while you order. They're also friendly af, too! I love that visiting one of the spots I used to go to frequently still gives me the same sense of comfort as it did pre-pandemic. I also love that they have adapted to offer their guests something fun during this time. Dive bar to go- I'll take it! So my sister & I went back to Taurus today and had the worst experience ever. From beginning to end it was awful. The male server with the spiked hair acted as if he didn't see us at the table and ignored us for a while. Then we were finally able to order. When our burgers came out they were really salty and burnt. Then when I showed the the 15% discount through Yelp they said they didn't know anything about it and couldn't do it. Then it took a while yo grt our tab that we had to ask for several times. Service & food was not worth the money this time. So sad because we really liked this place. read more

We stopped here on a Monday evening to grab an after dinner drink. We'd never been to The Taurus, though this (primarily whiskey) bar had been on my list to try for a while, and it's supposedly been around as a drinking establishment in one fashion or another for nearly a century. We had a seat at the bar and I ordered the bees knees while my husband had a moose juice, which is The Taurus' rendition of the infamous drink from a now shuttered nearby bar called Mr. Moe's (RIP) that tasted pretty spot on to me and is served in the same oversized clear containers that Mr. Moe's once served moose juice in when that place was still hopping. Both our drinks were well made and since we'd stopped here during happy hour, both were priced at only $9 each, or less than $20 for 2 well-poured cocktails (and the moose juice is VERY large) before gratuity. Main reasons for only giving this place 3 stars (which means "OK" on Yelp's scale) is that, with so many whiskeys displayed on multiple shelves that run the full length of the bar, their "featured cocktail" section of the menu is surprisingly small. I really expected it to be larger with some more creative options. Also, when we arrived, the lone bartender (bald guy with a beard), seemed to be in a crappy mood and when we asked a few questions, he basically shot back with short, somewhat curt answers and acted like we were an irritation to him, though he only had 1 other customer there when we arrived. After our last Sunday brunch of the year, we strolled over to Taurus Whisky bar (owned by the same owner as Areite). Good ambience for a whiskey bar, quaint wood interior. It was quite crowded when we arrived and I believe there were two behind the bar? After a bit of a wait, the gang was finally was able to order drinks and bartender awesomely let me place my order while serving my friends. Didn't really have to wait long! Two thumbs up. I asked for a basic Old Fashioned (house choice of alcohol). My drink came and I really should have specified the type of whiskey but at least I was able to squeeze in that order. Anyhow, this old fashioned had somewhat of a bite to it, but at least the drink had orange peel that was rubbed on the rim of the glass, squeezed and placed in the drink. We hung out awhile and headed back to Ariete for Happy Hour! Woohoo! At the risk of sounding of a certain politician, anyone trying to legislate burgers away for whatever silly cause can take my cheeseburger away when they pry it from my cold dead fingers....and if it's a juicy burger like the Chugs Burger at Taurus I would keep haunting them :) I was down in the Gables for an afternoon (that dragged into 730 pm) meeting in the Gables on National Cheeseburger Day, so afterward I started looking around where to celebrate. They have outside seating, as well as barside & tables inside. Rolling solo, I sat at the bar. It did take a minute to get attention to get a food order, but I'm guessing that's because it was literally my first time at this Grove institution (and I was only having a coke and food.) I definitely got the vibe that they show love to their regulars and have a well stocked liquor repertoire. Anyway, as far as my burger I started with their thick cut potato wedges which had a pretty good crisp and I augmented with their sweet BBQ sauce. The star to my stomach was a juicy couple of beef patties, perfectly crunchy bacon, a drizzle of their "Chugs sauce" (which I boosted with the aforementioned BBQ) and yummy melted american cheese. I've been to Taurus now a handful of times. It's quite a cozy bar that gives you a little bit of everything you need to have a great time. Couple of times we visited for a holiday party. The staff was extremely attentive and helpful. I went with some Mezcal Old Fashion's that were exquisite, the wife went with some wine. We ordered some appetizers to make sure we didn't pass out with all the drinks. We went with a pepperoni pizza and pork tacos. The pizza was average to above, came right off the oven and had a good crust. I'd say the tacos were average. Soft tortillas and you can taste a hint of marinade but not much. Again fresh and hot, just lacking a bit of flavor. We were in the outside area which is quite spacious, the interior has karaoke which is always fun and the full bar. Attentive staff and very helpful, kind, courteous all the adjectives you can find. In all, it was a pleasant experience. I'd say 3 on the food, 4 on the facilities and 5 on the service. read more

Taurus has been my favorite whisky bar in Miami. Since I moved out of state it's been difficult to come visit Taurus specially with COVID-19, so last night after two years I finally had the chance to return. I was bummed to learn that all the bartenders that I once knew were all gone and that they had new owners/staff. It turns out Taurus is now owned by Nava And Ariette, located next door. The new staff is extremely welcoming and friendly. I was most excited to have their Frita - my FAVORITE frita in Miami, unfortunately Ariette and Nave were "too booked" and could not provide food service at the bar. For context, Ariette's kitchen services some of the food items such as the Frita and charcuterie board on the Taurus menu. Therefore, we ended up ordering the savage fries and chicken wings. The fries were truly savage and tasty. It had two different sauce drizzles and bacon chunks (so good). The chicken wings were aight, they had tons of onions and feta cheese topping. Can't say I was a fan. Unfortunately, I can't say this is the same Taurus I fell in love with when I lived in Miami. A bar that I would bring all my friends and they in turn also fell in love with. Their whiskey bar playlist is pretty bad and it's horrifying that they are "not allowed" to change it. I mean is the music for the owners/administration or the patrons? If I could give negative stars I would ... Wednesday 11:41 p.m I walk in with my friends (all 21+) I understand there is a rule if you do not have your id then you cannot sit at the bar. I explain to her that I am willing to wait outside the premises , and so I am speaking with my friends trying to tell Them I will wait outside , and she rudely tells me over and over to get out, I explain I will but I would first like to speak with my friends before I go. This is a great place for dinner and drinks. We've gone several times and it does not disappoint. All of the servers and staff are attentive and friendly. I had the fish tacos and they were very tasty. The fish was deep fried and it came with a very spicy sauce! My friend had the wings and they looked delicious! We also shared a truffle cheese pizza and it was outstanding! We had some beers that were on tap and some lemon drop martinis- those were delicious! I went to try the Chug pop drive thru menu they had today! It did not disappoint. It was a really cool idea. It was like if you were ordering at MacDonald's but it was the adult version lol. They had numbered options with boozy milkshakes, pies, burgers and cheese bacon fries. I had the Chug Jr burger (one party, cheese, bacon) with savage fries ( french fries topped with cheese and bacon) and a boozy milkshake (chocolate milkshake with bourbon). Beyond disappointed! I used to love this place so much both my husband and I have reserved the back for our birthdays in the past. Las night server Bianca and manager Danny (not sure I believe those are their names though) were extremely rude, aggressive and discriminatory. And make the night worse my tab was $160 for 5 beers and 1 Moscow mule. Needless to say they added drinks to my tab.
