There are many sorts of Public House in the UK - gastro-pubs, chain pubs, country pubs, old-man pubs, Irish pubs - the subtler distinctions of which can sometimes be hard for an immigrant to discern.
The Tavistock, however, is easy to categorise - defiantly old school, from the mahogany panelled bar to the large open fire, this is a quiet, cosy watering hole a world away from the vomit-and-kebab charms (or lack of) of the City Road establishments around the corner.
A Brains pub, it features the ubiquitous Brewery's range of ales, as well as the usual fare you'd expect in a local boozer. The back garden also has one of the nicest all-weather smoking shelters I've ever seen, making it a haven for smokers too.
It can get crowded on the weekends, although weeknights are usually a bit sparser - still there's rarely a problem finding a table. A great place to go for a drink and chat (as you can actually hear yourselves, and your companions, speak), this isn't the spot for a wild night, but as a soothing sanctuary, it can't be beaten. read more
