Recently paid my first and very likely last visit to The Tombs. To be fair, I live on the opposite coast so the odds of me returning are infinitesimally small anyway, but nothing besides the crab dip and fries would make me want to come back to this place. Sure, it's got its St. Elmo's Fire fame. But our group of six sat in the little back room so that aspect was lost on us. Nachos were nasty. Absolutely the worst I've ever been served. The "cheese" [product] seemed to be watered down Velveeta and wouldn't even stay on the chips. Scant toppings. Not tasty. Crab dip was actually pretty tasty. Served with big slices of crusty bread. Cheesy. Goopy. Kinda what you want with crab dip. I'd hit that again. Our group got a variety of dishes, from vegetarian lasagna to the chicken bowl to various sandwiches and a cup of soup. I got the smashburger with fries and it was decent. Fries were quite good. Burger served with dry bread, no spread, did not impress. Had to ask for a side of mayo to slather on the bun. Not sure why they made it with two small patties versus one bigger one that actually fit the bun. Made it hard to eat. Only spoke with one other person from our party about our outing the next morning, but neither of our bellies were feeling well, even 14 hours later. Maybe just go here for a drink at the bar and some crab dip and fries...? read more

I came to The Tombs to watch the tennis match but ended up staying for the food--and I'm glad I did. The brisket sandwich was outstanding: generously portioned, tender, and packed with flavor. At $22, it was worth every penny. I swapped the fries for a Caesar salad, which was fresh and a nice complement to the meal. We sat at the bar where Kate, our bartender, took excellent care of us. She was friendly, attentive, and very accommodating, which made the experience even better. The atmosphere has that classic DC bar feel--lively yet laid-back. If that's your vibe, you'll feel right at home here. I'll definitely be back, and the brisket sandwich will be the first thing I order again. read more

In honor of my friends 21st, we had to start the day, and end the day, and The Tombs in Georgetown. We all started with delicious boozy milkshakes. I got the White Russian, and it was super delicious!! I could drink so many of these!! We also tried various breakfast options and shared some crab and artichoke dip. Our server was extremely kind, it was her first day, and brought out a brownie with ice cream to continue to celebrate my friend. For a basic "university local bar" is as good as it gets. Down dodgy looking stairs to expansive well appointed sports bar with heavy boat club ambience. Good service with mixture of students and visitors. Menu good for such a bar and good bar choices. Surprisingly there is a real active fireplace. Tome beer ok but nothing special. Brisket with spiced fries just the right volume. There is a happy hour but watch out for karaoke night!parking ok if you are lucky. read more

My friend and I came here for an early dinner. This is the college bar of GU apparently so we figured we'd give it a try. The restaurant is downstairs and it's what you would expect for a pub almost. Casual, noisy got big screen tvs everywhere. For drinks we got the bold rock cider. When I gave the waitress my ID, she was very sassy and without even giving me a chance to say anything she said "oh no baby this is a fake" and was examining it in depth adding in "she even tried that" and walked away with my ID to the bar. I guess she had never seen the new VA IDs before which I've had for over a year now but that was my first time of someone ever thinking my real ID was a fake lol. It was comical too because I had just turned 28 a week ago so I guess I should take it as a compliment I look under 21. Thankfully the bartender knew it was real and I got my ID back. Besides that interesting encounter, the food itself was really good. I got the bbq pulled pork sandwich fries and the texas toast was fire. Ahh Tombs. Where to begin. I've been going there since I was a freshman at Georgetown. The nostalgia is strong. I think everyone needs to appreciate it by going at least once. The ambience is its own thing. The food is okay and sadly I think it and the menu has lost a step post-Covid. No one ever went to Tombs for gourmet food, but sadly something was lost in the mix. Came here over the holidays with some friends who went to Georgetown and had a great time. It was fun to experience a college bar but I have to say it was definitely on the nicer end when it comes to holiday bars haha. Came here with a large group before the first day of GU's undergraduates classes so it was packed with students. I got the summer chicken rice bowl and it was great, however chicken was a little dry, but a good portion of chicken. It was very busy but service was great and efficient. The best. Walk down the steps and back in time to your college days. We have been going to the Tombs since we were in school. Then it became our neighborhood joint many years later, and we still come back even though we don't live here anymore. Best burgers, Reubens, wings...you get the idea. Served by cute and friendly Georgetown students. Now the salads are great too. And it's probably the last $8 glass of wine in town. The milkshakes are amazing too. Family recommended this spot for lunch and it was awesome! We were able to get a table on a Friday at the lunch hour right away. Our server was so knowledgeable and attentive. He shared the history of the restaurant with us, which was cool to learn! I opted for the falafel pita wrap with a side mixed salad for my meal and it was so tasty. My husband chose the turkey sandwich and loved it as well. They do not have parking, but there are street spots available all around. The vibe inside the restaurant feels like a historical lounge/bar and is so fitting for Georgetown. They do offer alcohol but we didn't try anything during our visit. read more

Me and my friends came here to have dinner and they denied service to the only person in our group that wasn't white and claimed it was an "ID issue" when no one else needed to show their ID and we were not even there for drinks. HORRIBLE Experience - Do NOT Go If You Have Allergies! I went to The Tombs in Georgetown expecting a nice meal, but what I got was an appalling experience. I have Celiac disease and chose this restaurant because their menu includes "GF" indicators, which I assumed meant gluten-free. I ordered the nachos with beef, specifically informing them of my dietary restriction. The manager came over and said they couldn't do the nachos because they weren't gluten-free. Fair enough, mistakes happen. But when I pointed out that the menu shouldn't mark it as "GF," the server rudely snapped, "It's Gluten FRIENDLY, not free," and rolled his eyes. Excuse me?! That distinction is critical for people with Celiac, and the attitude was completely uncalled for. I then asked if he could suggest anything safe for me to eat since their labeling clearly wasn't reliable. He said no and walked away! When he came back, I asked about the steak frites, and he said it was fine--only to return later saying they could give me the steak but not the fries because they weren't gluten-free. Again, something marked as "GF." When I asked for a side option, he sarcastically suggested "maybe some lettuce." At that point, I gave up and walked out. The server remained rude and dismissive throughout the interaction. If you're gluten-free or have dietary restrictions, stay far away from this place. Their labeling is dangerously misleading, and their staff is not only untrained but actively hostile. read more

We were in DC with family to visit the Museum, Just before the Holiday Crush. After trudging through the museum we had worked up an appetite and were kind of chilly. We headed over the river to Georgetown to "The Tombs" headed down the stairs and were greeted by a friendly Host who sat the four of us in one of the famous booths. No doubt lots of politicians have favored this historic Saloon and Restaurant to hob nobody with each other along with lots of lobbyist folks from nearby K Street. The vibe is casual but business, seating is crowded but the place oozes history. Many a Georgetown Student has either tended bar here or was a server during their matriculation. The food is great, prices fair by DC standards. Stop by for a bite of DC political history. read more

I had the crab cake and had them substitute fries with grits. Their grits are so good!!! My friend ordered the shrimp and grits. Crab cake was good but the shrimp and grits was excellent!!! Solid bar food in a unique and historic setting. Wife and I went for an early dinner during the summer, so it was a lot quieter than I'd imagine during the year. Had the Tombs ale and you'd be hard-pressed to find a better $4 beer. The mac and cheese bites were the best thing we had. Spicy and tangy. Overall, a lot more flavor than the average place that serves these. We also ordered the Cobb Salad and the Chicken #1. Both were tasty and fit the bill, but not better than what you could make at home. read more

After being served drinks, our waitress disappeared. 45 minutes from the time we arrived, we still hadn't received our appetizer, while a table that came in after us had their meals. Well this is going to be a minute... I actually had to give it a few a days because I was and still am so disgusted. After calling for a 12-15 person reservation, I was told to come early on the day I requested, because it was Georgetown Parents Weekend. The girl I spoke with on the phone the week earlier said as long as I'm the first at the door I will be able to get my table for 12-15. So I arrived 45 minutes early in order to be the first the door. When the restaurant opened, I was told that I don't have a reservation therefore, I cannot get the large table. When I explained that I was told I could, as long as I was the first at the door, I was told that I was wrong and that such a conversation never happened. However, they decided they could squeeze 12 of us in to two tiny horseshoe booths, which actually only fits four people each. Since we had no choice, we accepted that offer. And we sat in the booths and were planning to order. However my very pregnant daughter could not fit because her belly was so huge. There was a single table next to one of the booths, and after talking with the hostess, she said, indeed we could use that singular table so my daughter could fit and enjoy her meal either our family, who flew in to join our event. Out of nowhere, a very rude, arrogant young man came over and told us that we were not allowed to use that single table and that my daughter needed to get up at once. When we explained that we were given permission, by the lady who sat us, because my daughter is so pregnant, he said and I quote " I don't care that's not my problem". I have never ever experienced a ruder restaurant employee than this guy. My cousin, in an effort to take care of his niece, said to the guy, " we were told she can sit here. Clearly she's very pregnant and the table is the only place for her to fit" to which the Tombs employee responded again " I don't really care" So all 12 of us got up and left. On the way out past the station, where the employees were gathering not a single person offered to help our situation. No one tried to right the many wrongs that were happening. True to that employee's word they really did not care. And it really wasn't their problem. I have never ever ever been more disgusted by an experience in a restaurant. It's pathetic. What a repulsive group of people running a restaurant so close to campus and one that many people search up due to the convenience of its location. If I were the owner of this restaurant, I would absolutely get rid of everybody and start fresh with a brand new staff. It was an embarrassment. It was a humiliation. It was a blatant disregard for professionalism, kindness and service. How dare they shame a young woman who was thrilled to be with her family during this wonderful stage of her very exciting pregnancy. To embarrass her in front of the restaurant and all of the patrons as well as the staff is a disgrace to Georgetown. I am a local, hosting my family from different states. I was ashamed of The Tombs and will never, ever go there again. But as the Tombs employees so eloquently said ...I'm sure they "don't care" and it's "not their problem". read more

As a Georgetown senior, I waited until I turned 21 (a lot later than my friends) to enter Tombs after 10 PM. It was the right thing to do....right? And I would get in trouble if I gave a fake ID....right? Well, let me tell you. I saw twenty-three (23) underage people (I counted) in Tombs last weekend. Not only that, I waited for ninety (90) minutes because LineLeap was prioritized, even though the line was short when I arrived. I thought this was the last place Georgetown's elitism was going to encroach. Boy, was I wrong. No freaking chance I'm doing the 99 day club and none of my (at least) 15 friends I have spoken to will either. I recently read a response from Tombs management stating that Tombs "take[s] the legal age seriously." Well, in my experience, this could not be further from the truth, but watched this 18 year walk right in. Must've slipped the bouncer a 20. Wheres the integrity? This place sucks! read more

I recently went to the Tombs with a couple members from my coaching staff after a game. It was during one of the March madness tournament games, so there were a lot of people there. Luckily, we had a booth that was comfortable and adjacent to the crowd. Our host was good, she did a great job, getting our drinks and food in a timely manner. A lot of energy at this place, most will consider it a College Bar. The food was fantastic. I love the nachos. Look forward to going back again. read more

I watched the classic brat pack movie, St. Elmo's Fire. The Tombs was portrayed on the film and it brought back fond memories of my time in Georgetown as a young political operative. It's been through a few owners, but has still remained the same as I remember in 1986. There were dill pickles in beer mugs on the bar for the taking. The food was pizza and burgers. Always reliable. I have greatly missed the world's greatest college hangout. I am happy to report it is now back in full force. Not even the COVID-19 global pandemic, the most devastating event in my lifetime, can KO a "Legend." I had the shrimp and gris for brunch with a little tabasco which was outstanding. The coffee is always good but not strong the way I prefer it. The prices are up very slightly from where they were pre-COVID, but certainly below much of the DMV. The unmatched atmosphere, friendly service and the delightful Georgetown student who was our waitress made for the best Sunday brunch. The Tombs is on my list again for Thanksgiving and Christmas when I return to my birth city. I cannot wait to get the chili, Tombs burger , and Chicken #1 on future visits. When you are a Georgetown DoubleHoya & Bleed Hoya Blue and you have a morning run along the Potomac-Across Key Bridge-Sprint up the Exorcist Steps-I can definitely say it does not get any better than a Sunday brunch at the Tombs!
