I'd heard that it was less expensive to see a dentist in Mexico, but was a bit hesitant to try using one. However after hearing many good reports it was time to seek a good dentist. I asked around and didn't get any specific recommendations so I searched online and made a few calls. I made an appointment with Dr. Portillo for a cleaning, exam and x-rays. (It was about 1/5 what the dentist would charge back home)! He did a very professional and thorough exam, found that I had 3 cavities that needed filling and since we were about to head back home in 2 days he took the time to do all the work needed in one visit! I wish I could give more than 5 stars to rate my experience at The Tooth Inc. The entire experience working with Dr. Chavez and his entire team were, as another reviewer said, at a much higher level than in the US. Dr Chavez is kind, gentle, and communicated everything clearly. It was my first visit and I had a deep cleaning, and he found a few minor issues plus easily identified issues that US dentists had described in the past (and for which I could not afford treatment). There was no pressure to create a treatment plan that I could not afford. I came with a friend who is facing the need for some extensive oral surgery, and she found the conversation she had with him to be similar. We were both very impressed. Not only was the time with Dr Chavez eye-opening, his team was with us from the time we walked across the border until we arrived near the border to rejoin our group. One of the assistants even ran (literally) to the farmacia to get our prescriptions so that they could be added to our bills and do that we could rejoin our group on schedule. At the end our day, Roxana, a beautiful young woman who was returning to college the next week and is studying to be a dentist, gave me a sweet hug and kiss. Everyone in the team seemed to genuinely care about us and devoted to making every aspect of the care they delivered superb. The group that we shuttled to Nogales with all used a different dental office that is well-rated and much larger than The Tooth Inc. When we met our group back in their waiting room, there was a discernible difference, with a larger but noisy and chaotic waiting room. Several people in the group were not happy with their experience there; despite delays and running way over appointment times, they didn't even get all the services they had appointments for. After hearing about our experience with Dr Chavez and his team, they made appointments there to finish their work! Traveling to Mexico for dental work the first time is a bit of a leap into the unknown. First, I did a lot of research to make sure that it would be safe and all that. As it turned out, it was better than I could have imagined. It's not JUST about saving a lot of money. I wanted to trust Dr Chavez and those at the Tooth Inc, they certainly lure you with friendliness and good service. Was diagnosed as needing fillings in most of my molars, and I believed you. To my shock, two other more experienced dentists in Nogales said my teeth were fine. Your quest for short term gain and "mas trabajo" negatively affects your reputation and every other dentist in Nogales. Your higher price is also unjustifiable when there are neighboring dentists with a decade of experience on you. I give two stars for for treating my periodontal disease. These are my second and third visits to Dr. Chavez at The Tooth. I cannot emphasize enough how impressed I have been by the attention and treatment I have received. The doctor gave me a deep cleaning yesterday, and today I came back so that he could remove an old filling, replace it, and hopefully save a tooth that was in danger of splitting. The work he did was excellent. Plus, the doctor and his staff do everything possible to make your visit a good experience. They even charged my cell phone while I was in the patient's chair! Honestly, I was a little hesitant at first about going to a dentist in Mexico. However, I am so happy that I did so and chose this doctor. My highest recommendation! read more

Dr. Chavez is a good Dentist as far as his professionalism is concerned. However the Dental lab that manufactures the dentures is quite poor by any US standard. My dentures are 1/2 inch more narrow then the old ones. Consequently I have to be very careful when chewing because I am always biting my tongue. Why they were made so much narrower I do not know. The wax model felt good and I don't think it was as narrow as the final plate. Before going to a Mexican dentist make sure the dental lab they use is equipped to make products correctly. In my case I should have made sure the new dentures would be the same dimensions as the old ones. So I saved some money but the dentures leave a lot to be desired. Will probably have to redo the process again to get dentures that are not awkward and difficult to use. read more

Our US dental plan doesn't provide any coverage for endodontics, so we wanted to see what our options were at The Tooth Dentistry in Heroica, Nogales, Mexico. The receptionist met us at the border crossing and guided us to their small but well-equipped dental office. I was pleasantly surprised by how advanced their equipment was. The dentist and assistant were truly professional in their initial evaluations and quite personable. The prices were half of those in the US and they have a lot of experience in completing the proper insurance paperwork for other types of dental work. We plan to be back shortly for the endodontic work. What a great find. read more

MISDIAGNOSED I had problems with my 2nd molar on bottom right of mouth. It had bothered me off and on for years. My American dentist never saw anything on x-rays so never investigated. He retired and I decided to cross the border and see if I could get it taken care of due to fear of high costs here in USA. I explained my history to the Dr. Chavez and he came up with his diagnosis which was that the problem was the 1st molar and not the second molar. He said that the pain was referred pain. He said the 2nd molar was fine. But, he recommended getting the 2nd molar fixed as well because it was messing up my bite. He spent a lot of time trying to convince me that the pain I was having in 2nd molar was actually caused by 1st molar. He showed me many x-rays of both my teeth and other patients. His cost would be $4200 for extractions and implants. After coming home and thinking about it, my gut told me to get a second opinion back here in USA. I could just not buy into his theory that the problem was the 1st molar since I had no pain in that tooth at all. So, I found a new dentist back home and she did some tests and said she suspected a vertical root fracture and said the tooth would need to be pulled. She told me there was no issues with the 1st molar. She referred me to an oral surgeon. But, I first went to an Endodontist to see if the tooth could be saved. Endodontist told me the tooth couldn't be saved and would need to be pulled. The endodontist also told me there was nothing wrong with my 1st molar. So, I went to the oral surgeon and had the 2nd molar pulled. No more problems. Pain is gone. So, there were no problems with the 1st molar as Dr. Chavez had claimed. I decided to not get an implant since it was the back molar and my total cost was $800. So, I actually saved $3400 here at home in USA. I also had a bone graft, so I can add an implant later if I chose. The lesson learned here is that be very careful with any dentist who gives you a questionable diagnosis and not just across the border. Trust your gut and if something doesn't sound right, always get a second opinion. The problem here was that fractures in a tooth don't show up on x-rays in general, so you need to make sure you go to someone with the experience to make a proper diagnosis. Clearly, this did not happen at this office. I'm giving 2 stars because the wife of the dentist who runs the office is very nice and professional. read more
