I swung by Nashville after a day spent at Brown County State Park and luckily got to drop into the Toy Chest before their 6pm closing. I had so much fun shopping for books for my niece, and even picked up some Smiskis for myself. They are the only authorized Smiski seller in the state of Indiana, so I'm happy I got to drop in. The rooms are packed with higher quality toys for toddlers up to teenagers. There was an interesting assortment of books including early readers. They carry many Melissa and Doug toys. This is such a wonderful local toy store. It's definitely reminiscent of the dreamy ones you see in the movies. We had a blast visiting twice during our visit to Nashville with our two year old and ended up purchasing a bathtub play set. The staff was both friendly and attentive. The store is located in a charming Victorian home with whimsical and fun wallpaper throughout. Prices seemed fair and I was impressed by their selection of European/simple toys. I made a trip to Indianapolis and decided to go out of my way to this store on my trip back to Tennessee to look for Sonny Angels since they are the only authorized retailer in the state of Indiana. Unfortunately, their hours are wrong on Google and as an out of towner that is very disheartening to make this drive and for the store to be closed. I dont want to leave a bad review due to the unfortunate situation and looking at other reviews but I wanted to bring awareness to the situation because if it can happen to me it can happen to someone else. Please keep your hours up to date for those that dont get the luxury to just try again during business hours! read more

I have been visiting this toy store since I was a child. This was my first visit to their new location just across the street from their old shop. The new location is bigger which is fantastic. They have a large variety of toys, ranging from toys that you would find in a typical toy store, to toys that you don't necessarily see. As a Montessori teacher, I saw a large range of toys that were developmentally appropriate for a wide range of ages. My husband and I picked out two new games to buy. We played "Fluxx" a card game, and it is an awesome game. Every time we come to Nashville, this shop is one that we definitely visit! read more

This is such a great place! I enjoyed the mall location in Bloomington when it was open, but this one's much cuter (and still in business). They've adapted beautifully to our newfound digital era and are willing to deliver things to a huge radius. They emphasize diversity where they can (they have a new box called "diversify my bookshelf," which is a bundle of books with BIPOC people as the main character, for example, or you can order Hearts for Hearts dolls from a variety of countries). They offer all kinds of packaging options from individual items to kits (like for birthdays or holidays), and I really like that they take the time to curate things for your kids based on their interests. The age range is wide. I think it's actually as wide as it can get, from babes - adults. Additionally, they support worthy causes (like BLM, for example), and show it by contributing to various related charities. This is really a neat toy store. Check it out! read more

My kiddo cannot enter without coming home with a present. We love the business and the owners try their best to appease the locals, as well as tourists. They offer so many educational toys and merchandise to support children's growing minds. I hold great nostalgia recalling my son's favorite baby toys before he could even sit up on his own. He loved his high-contrast baby mobile, the light-up Noggin Seek rattle, and a high-contrast board book(i don't recall title) that he loved so young, months before he'd look at anything else. Now we are mostly buying cars, but i still hold a special place in my heart for the Toy CheSt. The prices are comparable to Amazon but you are supporting one family valued by the community. I got a squirrel mask here. I don't really think I need to say anything else. OK, I will say a couple more things. This place basically rules. I don't have kids, but I don't need them to enjoy The Toy Chest. Don't miss this place if you're bumping around Nashville, whether you have a couple of munchkins in your life or not. Besides the mask, I bought an Edward Gorey puzzle and a build-your-own light up race car for my nephew. I wanted to buy a deck of cards imprinted with 3-D cats but restrained myself. This store has quite the selection! I usually find that small toy stores are usually missing some genre of toy. That is not the case for this store. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked through the store. They had puzzles, musical toy instruments, ball guns, puppets, traditional toys, building sets, etc. We thought we were going to be in and out of this store in 10 minutes but I think we spent an upwards of 45 minutes in here trying everything out and browsing around. I was with a wild bunch of boys and women and the store staff was very tolerable with us. At the end I walked away with a puppet on strings, a hacky sack, and a little action figure. I had my android phone with me and did some price checking and the prices were about right. Maybe 3-5 dollars more than what you can find in Indianapolis, so it is reasonable considering its remote location in Brown County. I recommend this store for all your child-like needs! :) read more

This store is great. It is a must for our family when we visit Nashville. We spent about an hour in the store playing and making our selections. I can't think of any toy store that has the selection as vast as this one. As I was following my kids around the store I realized how many of our frineds and family would love something from this store. I have read the last review and agree with the previous reviewer. They have everything that you would want. I just don't understand why the previous reviewer only gave the Toy Chest three stars. If you are going to Nashville, you should plan to spend a lot of time and money in this store. If you are not in Nashville, you should think about making a trip to the town just to visit this store. Great find for kids! Has lots of toys to choose from and very reasonably priced. My kids (ages 2, 4 and 6) absolutely love going here. As my six year old says "Mommy this is the BEST toy store EVER!" It's always our first stop in Nashville and we definitely recommend it. read more
