They are proud of their namesake, which centres on the story of the black greyhound of Linlithgow, whose master was imprisoned on an island in the middle of the nearby Loch and sentenced to starve to death. Everyday the greyhound swam out to her master with food and ended up saving his life. The locals call themselves 'Black Bitches' after the dogs symbolic loyalty. A great local, if quiet, tavern serving a range of real ales. It also has a nice beer garden. Apparently there is a folk music night every third Sunday of the month too.

Apart from the bizarre cross-burning moniker, there's not too much to get excited about. A few years back my cronies and I would come out in Linlithgow quite a bit as we begun to look for a more serene nightlife experience. The Bitch wasn't always on our radar, but on the occasions we did come in it was perfectly adequate.

I got the feeling that this was more of a cafe than a bar with all the cakes on the counter, with the server forgetting who to give the order to. Seems a nice place but I have been in friendlier places.

I'd reckon, despite it's modest size, 90% of every gig I've been to has been here.The booze tastes like an instant hangover but hey, you're not there for a poncy cocktail you're there for the huge list of experimental and alternative bands. Obviously, the busier the more atmospheric it tends to be, so when you're walking back look down into the tiny courtyard and if it's filled with too many people smoking roll-ups and wearing leather jackets you've come on the right night!

He often plods off to Henry's Cellar Bar and drags me with him and I'm glad he does. For once he is actually right about something being cool. There is often some obscure band playing or perhaps the next big thing and a great atmosphere to go with it. I have watched bands played here when they have first started out, and are now off to play T in the Park this year. So if your lucky you may spot some real talent. Makes for a fun night out and its a cool venue, so give it a bash!

The weather was absolutely perfect, and the vibes were great. We ordered fries, salad, humus, and pizza, as well as two beers. The food took almost an hour to get to us, but with the great views and the live music, we really were not too bothered by this. We sipped on our beers and enjoyed the experience while waiting on the food. There was an event of some sort happening at the same time that included food being cooked out in the open, which was fun to watch (even if we couldn't eat it). Highly, highly recommend eating here!

We arrived to a casual setting with only 5 rooms available to rent. Our room is spacious and cozy. We made reservations at the restaurant and the food was fresh and light with many great option. After dinner we headed to the riverside Picnic tables to enjoy the lasting sunlight, a glass of wine and to watch the birds, a rainbow and relax. Even if you are passing through, it is worth having lunch and sitting riverside. We will be back. Love it here.

The food was worth the lack of atmosphere: good prices, special offers and always filling. However, it is a place that is best enjoyed in the evenings, as it is making a real effort to offer something different for Shawlands. Monday night has a computer game tournament, and there is live music from Thursday through to Sunday- Sunday being an open mic night, that usually serves up some local comedy. Friday and Saturday see it turn into a trendy pub, with a graduate aged crowd: busy, but the screens have Sex and the City all Friday night and the atmosphere is lively and safe. The actual fittings are swish: this has been a comedy venue in the past, and retains some of that cool atmosphere. The last time I went in, it still had canvases of comedians up on high. It's also possible to escape the crowds by going to their balcony. At the least, it gives a clear view of the action downstairs. The bands are local and mostly do covers. Saturday is blues night, there is a DJ on the Tuesday evening, with cocktails on special.

The night itself wasn't organised by the bar but someone outwith who hosts a regular music showcase. The evening felt very uorganised, and although, little of this is down to Sweeney's, the staff were of little help. We arrived early. The decor is eclectic, the pub definitely has a personal touch. I really liked the musical and instrument motifs by the stage area. There's also some quirky signs by the bar. Although, it did all a bit funky and mismatched to me. When we walked in, instruments in hand, we made our way from one half of the bar to the other; one which has the stage. Although the bar staff in the first room had explained we'd to head through to the second, nobody welcomed us or explained what would be happening when we got there. Other than a heckle from some folks at a table and a 'What will you be playing for us?!', we were left to it. We took a seat and, noticing no other instrument-in-hand folks, wandered exactly what the plan was. So we ordered drinks, and then I introduced myself and the band. At this point, more musicians were in the bar. Phew! The barman explained that the person who runs the night was running late. Understandably not their fault, what could they do? But then time went on and on. And there was no update from the bar. We just waited and waited. We'd presumed we were first since it had been listed that way without a mention of running times but after waiting till after the night should have begun (when the organiser finally arrived), we found out we were second. By this point, we just wanted to play; play and go home. In addition, the monitor mix wasn't great and the organiser had mistakenly thought there was two of us, so Sweeney's only paid two of us for performing. The general feeling was that there's venues out there doing amazing things for local music. The best and memorable gigs for us have had great hosts behind them. We just didn't feel this way about Sweeney's, and that's a pity.

We eventually settled on the Venue because of their beautiful looking food and their array of gins. And we were not disappointed. I really can't rate this place highly enough. The staff immediately made us feel extremely welcome and completely attended to. They were knowledgeable, friendly and hilarious. A great discussion and recommendation of the menu meant that I had the scallops to start and the belly pork as a main. Everything cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. Not only that but my sweet, tender belly pork didn't need a knife as it just fell apart, and was huge! The place itself is made up of several little areas and they had a community dining set up where you share a giant table with other guests. I'm personally not normally a fan of this because I like my own space... But it worked well here as it added to the cost ambience. I could write a separate review on the range of gins and whiskey... But I'll just say, it's absolutely massive. We also tried some cocktails which again were wonderful. After eating our fill (and then finding room for pudding and some complimentary treats) we spent £65 on 3 courses each a one a few drinks. I have paid much much more before for a lot less. One of the highlights of our entire trip to Scotland was visiting The Venue, in Perth.
