Why am I, an American, writing the first review of this place?! Can someone else come and write something? Being right across the street from the station and being a Wetherspoons (a.k.a. one of the cheapest places in town) means the Union Rooms is usually full and has an eclectic crowd. It has a very nice ambiance for a chain pub as it was a former gentleman's club (not that kind!). There are two bars (one on each floor), a sit down dining area and a large-ish family space. That said, they run out of the most random things (juice? the advertised beers?) at the most random times and is so popular it seems difficult for the staff to keep clean. Located just a couple of minutes walk from Central Station, the Union Rooms are another excellent member of the JD Wetherspoon's family. The restaurants and bars are spread over a beautifully renovated old building, and offer an excellent place to eat and drink at fantastic prices that won't break the bank. Service is great and as you'd expect, Geordie hospitality abounds. You cannot fault the food, or the portion sizes either. My Italian tomato soup, along with my mixed grill, were quite excellent. The soup was piping hot and was served with a warm baguette and a pat of butter. The mixed grill would shame many a high class restaurant and was superb value for money. It was great to see the place busy and buzzing, as you'd hope on a Friday evening. If you are mobility impaired, I'm sorry to say that this would not be the place for you, due to the age of the building and no lifts being available. There are a number of stairs to ascend/descend which could prove an issue, especially to those in a wheelchair. I like this chain of pubs soley on the prices they charge. Wetherspoons is well know for cheap drink and meal deals, and nothing changes when it comes to this particular branch. Its only a few minutes walk from central station in quite a grand building, at first glance it does not look like a bar until you see the posters in the windows advertising promotions. The first time I went in here I was not sure where to go, when you first step inside it is like a big hall way with stairs and what seemed like loads of rooms. I was unsure if you could go upstairs or not. I ended up in the door on the left, it was extremely busy with a bar and tv screens on the wall. Even though it was busy once you made your way through to the bar you did get served quickly. I am sure if we ventured elsewhere they might of been a little more room, but its difficult when your not sure where your going. read more

Me and my partner sometimes go to Newcastle for a few days and this is usually our first stop for a sandwich and a beer before heading to the hotel. The building itself is very grand and the main bar lives up to that image. Huge ceilings, dark woods and high chairs, and of course the expected "pub quiz" machines. The Union Rooms also has a second bar on the ground floor, just keep walking along the main corridor and you will find yourself in it, very bright and cool, probably aimed more towards people eating lunch. There is also a quiet room for people who are sitting down to a dinner maybe before they catch the train which means if you like making noise or are already drunk, go sit somewhere else. Good idea if you ask me. If you go upstairs as you come in you will find yourself at another bar. Three bars might seem like a bit much but remember the name Geordies have for enjoying a night out and during the weekend I can imagine this pub gets very busy. As for drinks it's the same as all Wetherspoons and Lloyds. Cheap, cheeful and not a great selection of real ales/ciders but there are some available if that's where your taste buds lie. read more

It's a Weatherspoons so it's a chain, but unlike so many others, this one has character in spades. Thankfully the ghastly building that was next door has gone. I can remember how it stood empty for decades until it was done up. I always felt sorry for it. It must have cost a fortune to build, not as a house, but at the Union Offices. Not sure what Union, I will have to look at the stained glass more closely. There is an amazing dome above the impressive staircase, and an open area at the back was given a glass ceiling. The food is pretty standard JDW food, but a good idea if you are out on the raz as there are usually plenty of 2 for 1 offers. The beer isn't bad with several real ales, and the prices reasonable. I have seen queues outside on a Friday and Saturday though, but it is HUGE! I gather they do a good breakfast, but I would pick Revolution next door. read more

The food here is lovely, eat in the back room if you want some quiet they always have good deals on and take full books of vouchers for food They do really nice cocktails here as well It is a weatherspoons so all the offers are on the website the girls toilets are nice and roomy and usually quite clean There are plenty of tables to sit around at - it gets very crowded in here They have taken away the telephone under the stairs so no getting pinched by stange men now as you usually had to bend down to get it Good for meeting people at the start of a night out as easy to find people in here and handy for the metro read more

Situated very close to Newcastle Central Station in a beautifully restored Victorian building, The Union Rooms is a Wetherspoons pub, serving the usual array of draught and bottled alcohol, a limited choice of cocktails, a selection of ales and fairly basic pub fayre. The building is huge, it has an impressive central flight of stairs as you enter and there are various rooms, most containing bars. Downstairs on the right is a smaller room with a number of tables and a selection of hardback books to while away the time. There is a large bar to the left and then a second straight on behind the stairs in the atrium. Straight on again is a smaller room containing 4-5 tables, or if you turn left out of the bar there is a very nice room with 4-5 large tables and a roaring fire (gas unfortunately, but the surround is original). Upstairs is another bar and a further two rooms with tables. The drinks prices are very reasonable and there are always a number of special offers. The menu is okay and not expensive (two meals for around £6-£7 from a set list or individually priced starters, main and desserts). There are regular steak nights, curry nights and set Sunday roast dinners as well as an interesting selection of jugs containing unlikely cocktails. There is music playing and a few games machines but the bar does not have any live music. There are occasional wine/ ale tasting events. It is the only pub in Newcastle where there are so many cubicles in the ladies toilets that you never have to queue! Worth a look just for the architecture. Not sure this should be classed as a restaurant. This wetherspoon is good for a pre-Drinks drink and a bite to eat if you can't be bothered to go further into town. There's no music at the venue so it can seem a bit empty as its huge inside and often empty during the day. This also means that if you come from a venue, such as the long bar to union rooms the atmosphere is like a slap in the face. read more

We went here for lunch on a warm sunday afternoon and couldn't find a place to sit! The courtyard, which was full of sturdy wooden tables was full of families enjoying sunday lunch, so was the front of the house, giving straight onto the river Tyne. This is definitely a testament to the combination of Wetherspoons value and great location in one! The pub itself occupies a rustic building with cozy low ceilings and atmospherically crooked walls. Located at one end of the spectacular Newcastle quayside, its a great place to stop for a spot of lunch or drinks if you're enjoying a leisurely promenade. read more

Cheap and cheerful Wetherspoons pub. As with all of the pubs in the chain you know what you are going to get; cheap drink and cheap processed (yet nice) food. The atmosphere can be poor as it is made up of lots of little rooms, but it does come alive when it shows football on the big screen at weekends. Visited Sat 25th Aug, Went to the bar asked for a couple of drinks one being a pint of Hobgoblin,looked at it and was not impressed (very flat) but had a taste and was totally not impressed as it had a very awful taste, while i was still at the bar i explained to the bar-person who called the manager over (Graham Hazel) who after tasting from the pump proceded tosay that there was nothing wrong with it, i have been drinking hobgoblin for many many years and it tasted like cleaning liquid. I then asked politely for him to change it for another beer or my money back. I think customer service went out of the window as he refused point blank. I dont quite know why I like this place but I do. Maybes it's the decor and whole layout of the place. The big staircase going straight up the center leading to the upstairs bars etc, or the old building feel to it but I always have a good time in here apart from having to wait an age to be served due to how busy it gets. The bouncers are a good laugh and polite. While standing smoking outside, I have stood for a while chatting to them. The female bouncer ( a short, stocky built lady) is really funny. She's a credit to bouncers in Newcastle. read more

The Union Rooms is situated in a beautiful building just opposite Newcastle's central station. The pub is part of the Wetherspoons chain and offers a great selection of food and drink for extremely reasonable prices. The pub is set out over two floors with various large, themed rooms. The best of these is the 'library' which is perfect for a quite drink with friends. The staff here are very efficient and it never gets too busy. There is many sets of clean toilets in the Union rooms as well. read more

Not impressed with the food,had fish and chips,the chips were skinny,yuk,fish was nice but very small,no peas so asked for coleslaw or abit salad none of that either,so got vanilla cheesecake which was made up quickly wasent set,looked like it had been splatted in the bowel.first and last time here.very expensive.dont get enough food. so not happy. read more

This bar is stunning and by far own of the most unique places you'll ever drink in. It's huge, spread out on 2 or 3 floors in a gorgeous late Victorian palatial style house. It has a large wooden staircase decorated with stained glass and lots of different rooms so you can choose where you feel comfiest. I don't know why the Union Rooms has received such bad reviews so far, it's an honest and pleasant place to head for a drink and some food when it's not too busy, just make sure you steer clear of the rather grotty ground-floor rear areas, which are quite unpleasant and dull at the best of times. Perhaps that's where the last reviewer was unfortunate enough to be drinking in. The 2nd level, however, is a spacious and open area with lots of comfortable seating available for the hearty pub fare on offer, and as this is a Wetherspoon's is also pretty reasonably-priced. I've not been disappointed eating here before, and for a few drinks there's not many places that can challenge the Union Rooms in terms of value-for-money in the vicinity. read more

Typical Wetherspoon pub..cheap and cheerful. Can't fault the beer prices, and it's open from 9am too - can't be bad! As has already been said, the back bit is a little dingy and full of dodgy characters at times and it can get VERY cold due to it being a big open place. My biggest complaint though - and this applies to a lot of pubs these days - is the lack of staff. Often the rear bar has nobody on duty and you just have to wait until someone wanders in. Likewise, the front bar usually has just one or maybe two serving, even when it's jam packed. Cheap beer is all well and good but I won't queue for ages for it. Not a lot of atmosphere really, seems to be a good place to start off on a night out but I couldn't spend any great length of time there. read more

A very attractive, chilled out place to be where the prices on food and drink are very reasonable and good quality. Ideal for a starter bar on your night out. A museum like building which gives warmth and tends to make you relax. read more

If you're after cheap beer with a good atmosphere I can recommend the Union Rooms. It's part of the Weatherspoons chain. Food is served although I haven't tried any. As I've mentioned the beer prices are great and it's got plenty of space if you're in a big group. Lots of different areas to suit different moods, some are a bit quieter than other parts. read more
