I'm too frustrated to find the words to describe just how disappointing this business is. Always just use the post office if you possibly can make time during their limited opening hours. UPS is infinite in its ability to make up ridiculous rules and charges. And, it seems from what I have observed, they exploit their front-line counter staff. You cannot buy one of their boxes and package up your item in their store. You must give it to them so they can package it and change you $20. You cannot bring your box already packaged no matter how securely or nicely; they'll find a way to claim they must repackage it and charge you more. It's not really the $$ that bothers me; it is the principle of the thing. Every time I have to use UPS I leave feeling swindled. read more

i shipped a box to elderly folks who had just moved into a retirement complex on 11/12/13. the box was suppose to be delivered to them for their Thanksgiving Meal, but by the Monday before the holiday, the box had not arrived. i discovered these seniors had given me the wrong address. i called the UPS store as soon as they opened but Stuart informed me that Mark, the manager, would call me as soon ss he arrived to work. He never called and by thd end of the business day i was proactive and called and spoke to him. i explained the situation and discovered through tracking that delivery had been attempted that day....but the box was on its way back to Boston. i don't know why UPS asks for the recipient's phone number because the delivery people never attempted to call them even though the delivery person was in the rental office for the complex where the intended recipients live. . So the box arrived back to the Boston store and Mark, the manager, called me while i was away to come pick up the box. Told me he was told by the owner to come pick up the box. i would have to pay again to have the box delivered. i argued with him that it was unfair and he hung up on me. When i attempted to call him back to tell him i was away and would pick up the box in a few days, he hung up on me and he did it not only once but three times. SENIORS beware. Never ever ever go there to have anything shopped. i went to a competitor nearby and had the box shipped at the same service for a lesser rate. Shame, shame, shame on UPS. read more

I come here to ship items for work or send online returns via UPS. I haven't had a bad experience yet--the staff has always been able to help me get whatever I'm shipping out the door, and it's always arrived on the other end on time and in good condition. I do find UPS expensive, but they've been able to help me with rush deliveries on weekends that the USPS just can't touch. This particular store is pretty small and doesn't have the best selection of packing materials, so if you can, come with your item already boxed. read more

Massively dishonest about pricing. I bought a 12x12x12 box from them. (For 8 dollars, by the way. A one foot box, for eight dollars! Are there threads of 24-carat gold woven in to the cardboard? Needless to say, the prices aren't actually displayed anywhere, one doesn't find out that small cardboard boxes cost 8 bucks a pop until one has one's credit card out at the register.) Then I checked online and found the flat rate UPS pricing. UPS's website said the maximum dimensions were 12x12x12 for flat rate---note, exactly the dimensions of the box I bought (this plot point becomes important in a moment)---and I'm well within the weight limit, so flat rate looked good. UPS quoted me a price of $23 for ground. So I hauled the box back to this store, the very same store from which I bought it, only now the box in question was full of belongings that needed shipping. To my shock and dismay, they turned around and charged me $48. What happened to the flat rate shipping? The person working at the desk at this store informed me that: 1. Flat-rate shipping only works if you print a shipping label off the UPS website; and 2. The 12x12x12 box I bought AT THAT STORE is actually a 12X12x12 box in the INTERIOR dimensions. So it's bigger on the exterior, and, thus, too big for flat rate. That's right. They use one measurement for the boxes they sell, and another measurement for the prices to ship those selfsame boxes. I believe the technical term for this practice is "bait and switch." But since this is 2019, I'll borrow an equivalent phrase (and capitalization) from the current (alas) American President: CROOKED HOAX. Only, this time, it's actually a crooked hoax as opposed to the thing that trump is on about. No matter what price you're quoted by anyone for anything, expect to pay 2-3x that price at this dishonest ripoff shop. Next time you go there, you should ask them why it is their policy to sell boxes labeled with sizes that in no way reflect the UPS pricing structure attached to those sizes. And to effectively charge $25.00 for the service of printing a mailing label. Perhaps they have gotten pricing tips from the airlines? "The UPS Store: the Ryanair of shipping." It's a pretty catchy slogan actually. Although, given the theme of our times and of this post, maybe "The UPS Store: the Trump University of shipping" would be more appropriate. "The UPS Store: the Comcast of shipping?" Really, there's no end of corporate criminals in our fallen world. Still, it's always disappointing to discover yet another one. Look, you know the Post Office is horrible. I know the Post Office is horrible. Going to the Post Office is a much longer trek that requires being treated with loathing and disdain, basically indistinguishable from a trip to the DMV, while you stand in the massive lines to beg for the privilege of being permitted to mail something. But the alternative should not involve the words "bend over," and, my darlings, I am afraid in this case it rather does. (Of course, at least half the time, when you use UPS, you're using the Post Office anyway. At least on the receiving end. Because every company that sells anything in 2019 uses a "service" called UPS SurePost or the equally blithering fedex equivalent which, and I am not even making this up, takes packages from shippers, drives them around the country seemingly at random for a while, and then *puts them in the mail*, thus managing the incredible feat of both costing more---at least to the innocent victim consumer on the other end who is not warned that this is about to happen---and taking longer than the post office. UPS: the American Healthcare Industry of shipping? I'm pretty sure the only reason Amazon exists and has a functioning retail empire is because they have the massive competitive advantage of sending things one purchases in such a fashion that one actually receives the things.) Speaking of politics. This feels, as I write it, rather more populist than is entirely healthy. But I can't resist: when Elizabeth Warren gets into office and starts going into Corporate America with the buzzsaw of the Antitrust Division, the FTC, and everything else she has at hand, I cannot WAIT until she gets far enough down the list to do something about (to) the shipping oligopoly. And I will gleefully be there to lend a hand with the pitchforks. Although, lest you think me a fanatic (and given the length and rage of this review that's probably pretty much unavoidable anyway), I hasten to add that I'd be happy to support a capitalist solution to the problem as well, if someone just wants to Uber this entire industry. Pretty much all it would require would be honestly disclosing the prices up front and actually providing the services for which said prices are paid. But that would be such a fundamental change in the basic model of this industry that I utterly despair of it ever happening. read more

Beware of extra charges at this location. Not only do they charge per box for a USPS drop off (which I have never experienced at any of the various UPS store locations I have been to around the country), but today they also charged me for a small sliver of tape as well. The two options provided to me when I said I did not bring my own tape were a "donation of 2$" or to buy a roll of tape. Keep in mind this was a well constructed box with minimal tape required. This is a general UPS review. I have never experienced such bad customer service in my life. I have a very heavy package that I need to get picked up because I can't carry it by myself all the way to the store. I gave explicit instructions for someone to buzz my apartment number-- since I live in an apartment building, and not to knock on the front door of a 5 floor building. I scheduled a pick up three days ago and no one came. They claim that they did, but I was at my apartment all day waiting and no one rang the bell. I rescheduled the pick up for yesterday. I waited from 9am-8pm yesterday at my apartment and at 4pm I called since no one had come again. They assured me that someone would come before 8pm and ring the bell. I continued to wait. At 8:30pm I went downstairs and someone had come and left a notice on the downstairs door, and never notified me that they were here. I have confirmed and reconfirmed my phone number maybe 8 times. No one has tried calling me. I rescheduled AGAIN for today. I was told someone would call me by 10am. It's been over 2.5 hours since then. I called back, no one could tell me anything. On numerous occasions they have told me that a local UPS would call me back within an hour. I have yet to receive a call from the local UPS. I have placed 10+ phone calls to UPS and they can never give me a straight answer about what's going on. This is the third day I've been trying to get my package picked up. Never do UPS package pick up. Worst experience. read more

I have nothing but positive things to say about this UPS so I'm happy to write a review that helps level the playing field a bit! I needed to return a pair of shoes to Zappos and get an affidavit notarized. Lucky for me, I discovered after some googling that I could get both errands done at this UPS store. I called to confirm that their notary was on-site that day and then headed on down to Newbury St., without checking any reviews to see what's up with this particular location. Two very friendly employees greeted me and one turned out to be Rachel, the notary (or notarizer, or notarer...whatever the proper name is). She was great--fast and pleasant and easy going. I signed, she watched, stamped the affidavit, and we were done. I pulled out the package I needed to mail and she took care of that just as smoothly and I was in and out of the place, receipt and tracking number in hand, within 5 minutes. The next day I was browsing yelp and I decided to check the reviews--wowza, there are some horror stories! In a panic, I tried to track my package to see where it was. My heart dropped when I saw its status: not picked up yet. What was going on here? Was I the next Newbury UPS victim? I called the UPS store, ready to yell and fight and make sure those shoes were returned. But the woman on the phone was so nice and explained that it was Monday morning, I had dropped off the package Saturday, and ground deliveries aren't picked up over the weekend so it wouldn't go out until that evening. I had a very bad experience with the Columbus Ave UPS Store when they asked me for a $2.00 tip to put a little tape on an envelope. The only alternative was to buy a roll or leave. I work right down the street from here and huffed down with my holiday packages to be sent yesterday. I had my tape (based on a prior experience of having to buy a entire roll of tape because I didn't have any) and my bubble wrap. I bought two boxes and the girl said - "you can't pack your box in the store though". What? Why not? "Oh, we offer a box packing service for some obscene amount of money." So I stood right outside their door on the stoop in the cold and snow and packed my boxes. People had to climb over me to get into the store - which made me happy because everyone said "why are you packing your box out here in the freezing cold?" and I got to say, "because they won't let me pack the box inside the store" and they all said "that is stupid". Yes, yes it is. I also noticed two things when I actually was mailing the freshly packed boxes. First both of my packages weighed 6.05lbs and since they always round up, I got charged for 7 lbs each. Two boxes, different sizes and different content both coming up at EXACTLY 6.05lbs and getting rounded up??? Hmmmm. Second - the woman was adament that I had to pay for 2 day shipping to get it there by Christmas. She said estimated delivery for ground was Christmas eve and it probably won't happen. I didn't fall for it. When I got back to my office I looked up the tracking numbers and they say estimated delivery date 12/23. Hmmmm. They do get props for being super nice and cheery while they rip you off and make you stand in the cold to pack your box even though NO ONE else is in the store. read more

you know....i used to like going into the ups store....but lately they have really aggravated me. until my last two visits, i have always been greeted kindly and the salespeople were eager to help. the last two times i was in the store, i was waited on by a rude guy named james. he didn't even say hello and was totally passive aggressive and absolutely not helpful. today he told me he was going to charge me $2 to use a piece of his clear packing tape. times really must be tough for the ups store...... i hope that the next time i am in the store, the more friendly workers are there instead of james. read more

I've had a box here for 12 years, and the price has gone up steadily every year. This year though, without any notice, my box rental went from $17/month to $30/month. Bad Economy? Apparently not for UPS Rip Off World...The Staff is randomly pleasant or difficult, but the service is generally crap. They're supposed to call when an express (overnight) package comes in. I went to this location in a desperate attempt to send out important information that I needed a return envelope for, that was also trackable. For some reason, FedEx was unable to help me with this and said it was impossible to have a prepaid return envelope. WHAT?? Anyway, I called this location (Newbury St.) and James was a saint. He said doing that was something they did often and it wasnt a problem at all! It was so super easy. I even forgot a document and they saved my envelopes at the store until I was able to return a few days later. This store was great, I think a lot of it had to do with the knowledge of James. I will say that picking up the package from the customer service center in Somerville was NOT easy. In fact, one of the worst experiences ever. But I'll save that for another review. read more

I explained to him that I should be there just on time, and when I arrived at 6:59PM the door was unlocked and he was so helpful. Yes they are a small shop and usually only have 2 guys on staff, but I find this one very efficient at getting things done. I stopped in for a big job around 430PM on Friday and a busload of customers walked in right behind me. It only took them 10 minutes to get through the UPS shipments and then they handled my issue quickly as well. I also appreciate that these guys are still in business: several ship/copier/internet places have moved out of the Copley Square area, making it hard to find help when you need stuff done. These guys are our unsung heroes. We have lived in the neighborhood for a number of years and using them for shipping and receiving packages has been one of the best decisions we ever made. Gone are the days of missed deliveries and lost or returned packages. They're open late and on weekends. Need something notarized? They've got you covered. This store and the manager, James, have consistently gone above and beyond for us. If there is some award they can win for their franchise, they deserve it. Came in to do some packaging fragile stuff, packaging, ship internationally and then get a passport pic done. Alan was awesome! Super multitasker, really easy going and gave me real person opinion which pic looked the best for my passport then reprinted it because the background was fuzzy and there were specs from the printer.
