We recently visited this ship - An amazing piece of history. I think it was an honor to go aboard, but think small things can completely change a person's experience. I would give the ship 5 stars, but our guide 1 star. Therefore I am going with three for this review, which I feel is quite generous. Here is why: Our tour guide was Ava (I think). The first thing she did was review her "three-strike rules." In other words, if you are corrected 3 times, she said that you would be removed from the ship. I am an adult and enjoy being treated as such. I have traveled all over the country and have never heard someone start a tour like this. She also told us that she did not have enough coffee that day and may mispronounce things. She talked extremely fast and the entire thing sounded scripted. Boom, boom, boom on the tour stops... Stop, quickly read your script and move on. I (and my group) found her to be snippy, rude, and a bit disrespectful. She gave pop quizzes on different topics but later asked why there was little to no participation. Well, I think that is clear - Nobody was comfortable with her because of her snippy personality. There is a radio on display that sits openly on the tour route. There were no "do not touch" notes on or around it. I touched the dial, as I was curious to see how the operation feels after so many years in service. I was quickly reprimanded by her - "Sir, do NOT touch the radio!! Thank you!" I have an idea here... if they don't want people to touch it, then don't have it on display along the rope line, which begs to be touched. Then, put a note by it indicating that it should not be touched. I feel like they want people to touch it so they can scold them and feel like big shots. I feel like she is doing a real disservice to the ship and crew with her attitude. The "come on come on come on people" is not a good model. I wanted to focus on the ship, crew, and history, but sadly, walked away with memories of her snippiness and rushing. It could have been worse, however - The group behind us was guided by a man who was yelling at the people as if it was the first day of basic training. This is uncalled for. Bottom line: Focus on the ship, crew, and its history. Treat people with respect and kindness. It is tourist funds that help keep this ship afloat and available for people to see. Give folks something to remember instead of tour guide meltdowns. Try to remember that people have a choice on what to see. Some drive hundreds of miles to experience this ship. Nobody appreciates a Crabby Pattie. read more

Beautiful piece of history to tour. Docked on the Ohio river in Evansville Indiana most of the year. We toured this WWll ship that was at Normandy invasion in 1944. Fully operational ship with many exhibits. Talk to the crew and get many facts and stories. Stick around as they will fire off one of the 40 mm guns. read more

When I was a kid, I used to build ship models. One of my creations was an LST. So it was really great to climb around one for real. First, let me give props. Thanks to the people who made such an effort to restore such an important part of the Allies' efforts in World War II. This was a truly unique privilege to tour one of the Navy's workhorses during that conflict. No, it wasn't glamorous the way an aircraft carrier or battleship might have been, but without a way to land equipment and personnel, we wouldn't have been very effective fighting the Germans and Japanese. So our tour guide, while very long-winded, was informative. As Shawn notes in an earlier review, a 45-minute tour became a 90-minute tour. As a point of order, the ship is not air-conditioned, so dress accordingly and bring water. To me, this tour could have been greatly enhanced with more information. I like to read the placards, which really told me more than the tour guide could have. Yet very little at all. For example, nothing in the gift shop literature told me that this ship was damaged in combat. In truth, make it more navigation-friendly. read more

This was a very different kind of experience and being able to go to a fully functioning ship and walk around and get information on it history was definitely something I enjoyed a lot. It was really hot that day and even hotter inside the ship but they had fans on several locations inside which helped a lot. Everyone should go here at least once if you are into learning more about the history or museums in general. Wish they had more visuals or more letters or pictures around the ship. read more

We are on vacation from Nashville Tn so this a legit last minute visit tour. I've never been active in any military service and frankly know noting about it. However this was very informative tour. Our tour guide Paul midle (hope that's correct) was so cool. He let my 6 year old son help with the tour. It really put a smile on his face. If you haven't been, just go. Really worth it. Just bring water because it's warm in the summer months. read more

One doesn't often get the opportunity to walk through a piece of history like this. It was amazing to learn more about the ship's history from it's WWII involvement to the amount of EFFORT, COMMITMENT, and INGENUITY it took for a group of life-experienced veterans to bring the ship back to the states to serve as a living museum for future generations. When I'm on the ship, I try to imagine the number of people who called this ship home for some period of their life, and it just gives me more respect for the preservation and revitalization efforts happening today. Took a tour on this WW II Navy ship while on a visit to Evansville. It was well worth it. Our tour guy was very informative and knowledgeable about the ship and its history. One tidbit of information is that for many years the ship was owned and used in the Greek army before being sold back to the Americans to be used as a museum to honor those who served in the wars of our history. The tour involves 6 flights of steps to maneuver at various times during the 1+ hour tour. Another consideration is the heat. It was bearable but at times uncomfortable. I might suggest going in the fall, spring or even winter as it might not be so warm in the under pinning's of the ship. I kept thinking of the soldiers who made multiple trips across the ocean to transport tanks, supplies, vehicles etc. to aid in the war effort. Just living in those conditions makes them heroes in my book. The ship sits on the Ohio River and is easily accessible with plenty of free parking. There are a couple of bars/restaurants at the dock for you can sit and eat/have a drink prior to your tour or after depending on your timeframe. Besides getting to tour the entire ship, from sleeping quarters, the galley, officers quarters, mess hall, engine room, loading dock, elevator shaft etc. there were multiple displays in the hull of the ship that the tour guide explained the significance of in relation to the war. One of my favorites was the display of Rosie the Riveter, a tribute to the woman who took up the slack here at home while the men were deployed to the war. There is a picture of a local Evansville woman who stills lives in the area who was a welder and worked on this ship. Makes me appreciate even more the dedication and commitment of the men and women who served to make our county safe. Since my dad was a baker in the navy it make me think of him and his sacrifice to serve as a young man in the 1940's in WW II. I highly recommend the tour. I regularly visit WWII ships anytime a city in which I am visiting has one on display. While certainly not the most impressive ship onto which I have ever boarded, the tour guide made the visit most interesting by pointing out many items of interest that one wouldn't see on a self-guided tour. I knew very little about LST ships upon arriving and left with a full understanding of the functionality and history of these craft. As is true with most historic ships on display, there are things which have been altered over the course of the last 60+ years. But the guide was very good at pointing out what was authentic and what was not, and of giving a good idea of what the crew and combat soldiers traveling in these ships had to go through. The LST-325 is well worth the time and money if you are in Evansville. read more

Great piece of history to explore while in the Evansville area. Tickets are reasonable at $15 for adults and FREE for active duty military and first responders. The one thing I didn't like is that you can't just explore the ship on your own. You have to take a guided tour, which they offer every hour on the hour. The tour take about an hour and the tour guide was nice, but I'd rather of explored the ship on my own. You don't have free access to the ship and you miss a lot. I think this can be attributed to the ship being a fully operational vessel that still goes out on the rivers to take this floating piece of history from city to city. Overall, really enjoyed it. I am so glad I made the time. The history of this ship and how it came to be and be in Indiana is STUNNING. I would recommend this to any fan of history, the U.S. Navy, WWII, naval warfare, Indiana, shipyards, Rosie the Riveter, or Veteran's groups! We enjoyed touring this ship, but our tour guide was very long winded and often went off topic. what was supposed to be a 45 minute tour of a historic Navy ship turned into and 1 1/2 hour story telling session. It wouldn't have been that big of a deal if it was just adults on the tour. However when its 90 degrees andyou have young kids aboard the tour should stay on track (and on time). Also, when leading the tour on a U.S. Navy vessel the guide should be sure to use the correct terminology; there are no latrines on Navy ships (they are called Heads) and they are called ladderwells not steps or stairs. read more

I took my family to the LST when it was parked in Downtown Evansville for the D-Day Event. Everyone was friendly, and very informative. It was very interesting to see how things were for the sailors back then. I will be going back when it is moved to downtown Evansville at its new dock. read more

Visited LST 325 while she was docked in Pittsburgh over the Labor Day weekend (2015). She is in superb condition and the tour was a delight. The staff/crew were more than eager to explain anything and take the time with you to share details. The vessel does not have air conditioning (except in Officers Country) but they had plenty of floor fans moving the air around in other parts of the ship. There was a nice gift shop with souvenirs and books set up in the main hold forward. Definitely a GREAT tour which will take you about 35 minutes minimum. Highly recommend! read more
