My husband and I had a wonderful dinner tonight at The Valkyrie. We sat by the window next to the beautiful flower mural. The atmosphere is relaxed and the restaurant was clean. Our server told us about the pomegranate margarita on special tonight, so that's what I had. Very refreshing and delicious! We also had the garlic battered cheese curds. We asked for the garlic aioli for dipping sauce. These battered cheese curds were phenomenal. Highly recommend the garlic aioli as well! My husband had the Mac and cheese with fried honey garlic crispy chicken on top. I had the honey miso chicken. Both of our entrees were SO good! The quinoa that came with my chicken was so yummy and the sauce on my chicken was the perfect sweet and salty combo. I also tried my husband's meal and it was delicious as well. The Valkyrie is a beautiful space that feels welcoming and is always clean. The BLT (no t) sandwich I got was very greasy. The bread was very thin. I don't think I would get it again because it was not worth the price. The french fries were amazing though! If you are a french fry snob, you must try the french fries if you visit! My boyfriend ordered the steak w/ Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes and said it was good. There isn't anything that is urging us to go again though. I feel that the pricing is a little high. The spinach and artichoke dip was $15. I have been to a lot of restaurants and I have never seen spinach dip be so expensive as an appetizer. From being there before, I noticed the owner was there when we were having dinner. When we walked out, we had to walk right by her and the hostess and neither of them thanked us for coming in or said to have a good night etc. but they did look right at us. Those small things are what people remember. I was honestly quite disappointed to not hear from either of them on our way out. Of course not everyone dining in is going to know who the owner is, but I know the face to the restaurant just from visiting over the years. I have followed The Valkyrie since day one when they started as a coffee shop, and I do want this restaurant to succeed! I think they are still trying to find their niche! There last night for a birthday party. About 12 of us. Certainly wasn't crazy busy for a Saturday night. To put in context, Hobo's is this busy EVERY night, so there's really no excuse. Also for context, the kitchen appeared well staffed with at least 5 people cooking/prepping. I ordered the Brussel Sprouts appetizer and it literally came burnt to a crisp and inedible. We sent it back. Then after waiting more than an hour, the $27 steak I ordered finally arrived and it was plain to see that it had been left under the heat lamp for at least twenty minutes. Actually we know it was left under the heat lamp that long because my friend, the birthday girl, was facing the kitchen window and actually watched them place it there and then started timing it. There were at least four meals just left there to go cold. Everyone's meals took forever to come out of the kitchen. A couple here a couple there. So when my steak finally arrived it was a cold, rubbery and smothered in cold gelatinous gravy. It looked disgusting. I had two grizzly bites. Completely inedible. The garlic mashed potatoes were cold, hard and literally crumbled under my fork. I boxed the steak up for my dogs! My friends mussels arrived at least 20 minutes before any other meal came out and was rudely just dumped on the table by a dark haired lady wearing a wooly hat and glasses. She couldn't even be bothered to ask who ordered it. No smile. No apologies from the kitchen. Just a gruff "here's the mussels" as she just walked off. She didn't even bother to bring silverware. I'd have fired her on the spot if it were my business! Butter/wine sauce in the mussels my friend ordered was burned...my friend owned a fine dining restaurant & is a chef so she absolutely knows when things aren't right and the mussels weren't good. No one in our party was happy with the food. A Blue Cheese salad tasted foul because they'd put the wrong dressing on it...another disaster! When I finally got my bill, they'd charged me for an appetizer I NEVER even ordered and tried to charge me for the burnt offerings they claimed were Brussel sprouts. I had to get them removed. I would have returned the steak and the mussels as well but I didn't want to be a cow and put a damper on the party mood. Afterwards we went across the street for a drink and I realized I'd left my iPhone at Valkyrie so I ran back to get it. Got to deal with the same gal with the hat and glasses. She was so incredibly rude to me. I was polite & smiling, and simply just asking if she'd found a phone. She gruffly claimed my phone wasn't there without even asking any other staff. After telling her the "Find My iPhone App" said it was here I managed to get her to at least try calling it and sure enough we (we being a nice man at the bar and the taller lady who looked like a manager) could plainly hear it ringing. The gal in the hat was clearly upset at me and stormed off in a huff after sliding the restaurant phone across the bar at me. Yes, that's right, she was mad at me. The cheek! I rang my phone again and once more we could hear it ringing. A nice lady, tall, slim, white top, carried herself like a manager, found my phone at the hostess stand. Overall, between the awful food and the rude gal in the hat I'll NEVER spend another dollar at that place! Far too expensive for the poor food quality and rude service. I love the idea of fine dining in North Muskegon but this place isn't it!! An expensive mistake we won't make again. read more

The Valkyrie is amazing and you should come here. The flavors and sense of place were exactly what I was expecting and the presentation was beautiful. The flavors were of course great. The beef tartare was perhaps the best that I have ever had (I've probably had it a dozen times at restaurants around the world). The smoked salmon flatbread was good (though I was not wowed by it only because my wife regularly makes something similar). The quality of the smoked salmon was excellent. My wife had the hamburger which was one of the best and most original she has ever had. The smoked beets were a revelation -- they are excellent smoked; I had never had them that way before. Everything was perfectly seasoned. The rye bread pudding with beet ice cream was amazing. My wife hates caraway seeds and yet she still loved this. It was the perfect not too sweet dessert and though I have been eating desserts at good restaurants for two decades this was one of the few interesting and new desserts I've had. Multiple cocktails looked good; I was designated driver so I only had one at the beginning of the meal, a Greenland (I love my green Chartreuse!). My wife appreciated the wine flights and the availability of nice wines by the glass (thanks to a Coravin). Service was impeccable. The only negative thing was there was a band playing as it was a Saturday night and they were too loud (over-amplified). The music was good, at least. Still, considering they have only been around for three weeks this is a small problem. read more

I've been here before I felt the food was better last year... took off my favorite salad which was the beet salad, it was about the only thing that I thought was really that good. Cocktails are over done -too much stuff in them..... the meatball appetizer is good. I really feel they need a revamping of their menu. I think the atmosphere is good. It's a nice place. read more

We have dined there several times in the last 3 months and never had a bad meal. Can't believe this place isn't packed with people every nite! The app (spinich/artichoke) was delicious. I had the Honey chicken siracha sammie and my wife had the Cobb salad. Both were generous portions and tasted great. Our service was great just like the other times we have been there. I think their problem is poor management. They only had two servers on a very busy Valentines dinner night, and those two were running as fast as they could to take care of everybody. But in the meantime, none of the tables got cleared, and our food order was bungled and served very late. And staggered, so my husbands dinner got cold while mine was being cooked. I did not enjoy looking at all the dirty tables around us either. This is the third time I've tried them and they're close so I want to come back. Also, the management blocks any comments on Facebook, and even their website, so they are unresponsive to their customers. A little acknowledgment would go along way. read more

1st visit and we weren't impressed, wanted to see more "Nordic" dishes but there wasn't much that really stuck out. We ordered the steak tartar as an appetizer which was tasty. For the entree we shared the special, pheasant over wild rice. It was so dry which made it hard to want to finish. We had great service though. For 2 drinks, 1 app & 1 entree we paid $77 before tip, so be prepared. I wouldn't mind paying that if we had ordered 2 entrees or if it was better prepared. read more

We love to try new restaurants in our area! And we really enjoyed tonight's adventure to the new Scandinavian VALKYRIE! We shared a shrimp cake w/apple & fennel salad& horseradish sauce for appetizer. Al had pork chop w/whiskey mustard sauce & roasted rainbow carrots. I had the Walleye with pickled elderberry and blueberry sauce. We finished with a shared pear tart for dessert. OMG, everything was delectable.the wait staff was top notch, thank you Vanessa! If you like microwaved food than this is the place for you. We were very disappointed in the quality of the food and the slow service. Tt was obvious that the crab cakes and the spinach artichoke dip were microwaved. The crab cakes were mushy and cool. The spinach artichoke dip was luke warm however the bowl was very hot, untouchable. The pita bread was floppy and soggy. The canned beer was barely cool. very disappointed. My son's birthday was a little over a week ago, After hearing so many great things about this restaurant recently, my wife, myself, my son and 4 other family members called ahead to see if we could make a reservation for 7 people around 2pm. Unfortunately, the man who answered the phone informed me that they are first come first serve (although, I would bet they will have to re-evaluate that decision once this place reaches its full potential (which is sky high)), however, he did let us know that they were not super busy at the time, and that he would write our name down and try to have a table available for us upon arrival. Much to our surprise, the man on the phone (Eric), turned out to be our server! Even more impressive; He had our table of 7 already set up before we walked in the door. Menus, silverware, napkins, and ice water were beautifully set as we approached to sit down. He even remembered I told him over the phone that we will have 6 adults and one child, so a children's menu and a water cup with a lid on it was also prepared. After catching up with the family for a while, he returned to inquire about any other drinks we may have been interested in. WE WERE! I got the 'Odin's Old Fashioned', my wife got a Margarita with a nicer tequila recommended by our server, and my son got some sort of craft beer they had on tap. Other than our table, there were five other tables at the time, one of them was even larger than ours. This is when I looked behind the bar and saw our server making our drinks. When I asked him where the bartender was at the time, he simply said "you're looking at him" with a big smile, before telling us that he was the only one working the front of the house until the beginning of the night. Well, Mr. Eric, Kudos to you! I worked in the industry from about 20 years old to 30 years old before my engineering career over the last 27 years. Rarely have I received the excellent quality of service that was provided by our server at The Valkyrie mid-afternoon at a fairly new restaurant. He impressed each of us at the table! He gave praise to kitchen and made sure to mention the new chef, whom he said is absolutely wonderful, and how she has brought the quality of food up tremendously since she has begun. He sure was right about that! There wasn't a plate on our table with food left on it! As we finished our meals, our empty plates were promptly cleared, giving us more room to mingle and catch up with one another! I can't wait to come back here! I feel like a regular after one visit. Eric said there is Karaoke every Friday night, so I think we have our Friday plans set in stone! Hopefully he will be there to take care of us. Food, service, and atmosphere were all amazing! The decor....wow...it MUST have been a professionally consulted, if not professionally done job. Things you just don't see every day! Oh! Of course...Tell Eric that "Bearded Bill" says "Go Green!" (Sports came up as a topic after he mentioned he is a life-long Sparty fan, which only made him that much better)!! My wife says thank you to Valkyrie for having servers that know their stuff! It was our first time at this restaurant. The food was delicious, and the staff amazing. They had live music playing after we ordered. However since we were there with friends we asked to switch tables so we could hear our conversation. The owner happily moved us to a table further away from the music, checked on us several times, and made us feel like we were old friends. Love this place and we will return. Stopped here for the first time with my wife on Friday night. It was pretty empty for a Friday night at 7 pm. The menu is fairly small. My wife ordered the smash burger, which was delicious. I ordered the NY strip, which was cooked perfectly (medium), but nothing on my plate was seasoned at all. For $34 I would have appreciated at least a pinch of salt and pepper. It probably won't be our last visit, but I hope it is better in the future. read more
