When you walk in it is a bit overwhelming. So much wine, beer and spirits, its a dream place of alcos. I was after a cheap red wine. There is one a like in particular labelled Two Fat Ladies, that I wanted. I walked up and down the aisles searching for it. These aisles were long, so I gave up the search and decided to just asked a staff member where I could find that. He told me that don't stock that brand. I was in shock. I thought this liquor store, being so big and all, would stock it. Unfortunately for me, they don't. Of course, I could try other alternatives, but it wouldn't be the same. Boo. So although this is a liquor superstore, they don't stock everything. But there is a lot of everything else that I'm sure would work out just fine.

You can get cheap, nice wines, as well as imported alcohols at a reasonable price. I like them. What makes this Dan Murphy's special is that it's next to my favourite Woolies. Yes, yes, it's another chain so it's all the same. But it's not, I swear! You want to make a cocktail and need some extra ingredients? Just pop over next door to Woolies and grab them! Opening hours are pretty stock standard for Dan Murphy's but are still good. From 9am every day, to 8pm Mon-Wed, to 9pm Thur-Sat and until 7pm on Sunday. Have a gander. They have a huge range and good prices.

Out at Skygate, this Dan Murphy's is located near the 24 hour Woolworths, but sadly isn't open 24…read morehours. That said, the hours are better than most bottle shops in the suburbs, so it's still handy if you need to nip out late for a bottle of something. It's not the biggest Dan Murphy's I've been in, but it's certainly big enough, with a great range. If you live in the area and need a decent bottle shop to visit, this might be the place for you.

The brewery is located in an industrial park about 25-30mins drive outside of Brisbane CBD (approx. $50 cab ride or $40 UberX oneway). We were pleasantly surprised to find the brewery buzzing when we arrived, a game of Cornhole underway in the front outdoor area, tables filled with beer paddles & a food truck (Puerto Taco) churning out delicious tacos to make sure we had a stomach lining while we tasted all their delicious beer. The inside bar/brewery/seating area is cozy, tables adorned with lamps made from old ten pin bowling pins, a games area upstairs as well as other board games to master at your tables while you drink. The bar itself has plenty of taps meaning they can have plenty of rotating beers on show and also keep a decent bottle list for dine-in or takeaway too. And of course this leads me to their beer, I was already a fan before I arrived but Bacchus put out some really creative & interesting craft beers, meaning you'll more than likely find something to drink whether you're a beer snob, beer n00b or non-beer drinker (everyone has to try the Lamington Dark Ale, the nose alone will sweep you away to Lamington-land :p).

Pretty much everything they sell is aimed at quieting a rumbling tummy; groceries, hot food such as pies and chips, cakes, drinks including milkshakes and sweets. These places are never exactly high class establishments; I get the feeling the majority of their business comes from serving an after school rush of annoying teenagers. But it's a friendly, neighbourly place, and if you need a basic item without the fuss of negotiating a shopping centre it's perfect. The store opens at 5.30am every day.

I used to walk past this obscure retail space on Musgrave Road in Red Hill every morning and every…read moreafternoon on my way to and from work. It was this indie-looking bottle shop that unfortunately always seemed empty. Then on a recent drive past I noticed the indie-looking bottle shop had closed but there was an alluring 'Craft Coming Soon' sign in the window. Staying true to it's independent bottle shop roots, Tony Harper (wine writer and former-owner of Anise) and his team have refreshed this space to open a bottle shop with a difference. I don't even want to call it a bottle shop for the connotations it promotes. Gone are the standard "could get anywhere" bottles of wine, beer and spirits and instead shelves are adorned with hand-selected brews from Australia and afar with a focus on introducing some of the best natural, organic and biodynamic drinks to Brisbane's palates. I was fortunate enough to meet Tony and sample a few of his favourites during a Christmas degustation tour. We sipped on organic Jean-Paul Perardel champagne, an all natural first drop white wine which we all declared is a wine that can be "all things to all people", and a Natural Selection Red Wine. This red wine was the stand out for me. Not being a red wine drinker I automatically declined a taste of this wine which is touted as "a collaborative experiment in natural winemaking." At the insistance of the group I was with I relented and tried it. I'm glad I did. It was smooth, fresh-tasting and unlike any red wine I've had mainly because it is one I'd drink again. The point to all of the above is, whatever you're looking for the guys at Craft will undoubtably have something for the occasion and in the process will arm you with a world of knowledge about brewing practices, wine making and so much more. It is the kind of "local" that you'd walk in for one thing and come out with many more, yet that's the beauty of it. It isn't a mass-market store and to me, that is a part of its charm. And, if you're like me and geek out over packaging design, their range of wines with beautifully designed labels will give any dinner party host a beautiful gift!
