We actually really loved this place! We weren't sure if we wanted to go to another chain pub as we love the independent pubs in London, but the leek and chicken pie pulled us in. Stopped by here on my first night in London on my most recent trip to get out of the hotel and help keep me awake. Location is great, not far from Tower Bridge. I had made a reservation, but the upstairs was closed so after arriving they just sat me at a table in the bar area which was fine. I chose this place as an Alice in Wonderland fan, and there are a few nods to the book with pictures downstairs but it is not overly themed (which was expected based on their website description). The bartender was friendly and I quickly got sat and had the fish and chips, a glass of white wine and ended the meal with some sticky toffee pudding. The portions were very large, so if going with someone I would recommend splitting a dish. Overall food was okay, atmosphere was as expected for a pub and it was a decent experience. read more

What a beautiful restaurant/pub!! While visiting London, we found this place by accident. I'm so glad we did! The Alice in Wonderland paintings are gorgeous! The building itself while extremely old is clean and so well maintained. Ordering is a breeze with an online system. I tried the house made lime soda - so delicious and refreshing! Being a tourist, I wanted to try traditional English fish and chips. I received a beautiful piece of haddock cooked to perfection with a lovely beer batter that didn't overpower the fish. Chips were crispy on the outside and tender in the middle without being greasy. I enjoyed the mushy peas!! My daughter had the steak and ale pie and the pastry was beautiful!! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to try the sticky toffee pudding as they were out - but I will definitely be back!! Our waiter was extremely friendly and so kind to talk to me for a couple of minutes to discuss the building and it's history. Service was quick and he asked first if we had any allergies. I like this location, very close to the Thames river and right on Monument street near the Tower of London. There menu is exceptional with some great choices. You will find they have a good variety of draft beers on tap as well as many bottled favorites. They will allow you to sample a draft if you wish. Sit or stand at the bar or choose one of the may small two or four top tables about. The service here is friendly and professional. Many HD TV's if you want to catch a game. read more

Loved this place. We came here for dinner, sat upstairs, and pretty much had the whole second floor to ourselves. The decor was beautiful with Alice in wonderland themes. We started off with wine and had a wonderful waitress. The food was good, but the giant couscous salad is not giant at all. Mac and cheese was very rich. The dessert we ordered- profiteroles- were recommended by the waitress and delicious! The pub downstairs was fairly crowded also, with many friendly business people and staff. I happened to come upon this place when I was lost in London someplace during lunch hour so I walk into the bar all by myself and I decide I'm going to order some ribs and have some crappy beer at about 12 o'clock in the afternoon since you need to drink really early over there and it was insane to see so many people in their work uniforms literally either running or walking extremely fast to this bar and none of them were ordering food they were just ordering booze and drinking shots in suits and conservative attire I just sat there in my chair and was like -whatever Felicia I got ribs! We came here for lunch yesterday (Sunday) it was pretty quiet, which was nice for us, we'd had a big morning sight seeing. Several menus to look at! Some are repeats but there's still heaps to choose from. I ordered the steak and mushroom pie, hubby had a sausage that sat in a giant Yorkshire pudding. We did order 2 more sides of Yorkshire puddings but the delivery truck didn't bring them and they were out. The service was alright, bit disjointed. The guy didn't process the credit card properly and it didn't go through, so we had to do it again. But he couldn't take off the £2 for the refund of the Y.P's, he had to wait for his manager to come and do that. The food came out in about 15 - 20 minutes. Overall it wasn't bad, the mashed potatoes was a bit like glue and I've had better pies in my life. I think where the pie failed was more in the pastry than the filling, ended up eating the filling out of the pastry. The gravy on the side was a bit too thin for my liking too. read more

The walrus and the Carpenter is the poem that tweedle Dee and tweedle dumb resided in Alice in wonderland. I'm not a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland so I went ahead and sat out here and looked it all up and it is really fascinating to tell you the truth. Greatly enjoyed this restaurant. We saw this place while on a walking tour of the City of London and thought it looked charming. Very good service and fair prices. We had fish and chips, shrimp and chips, and three beers for 40 pounds. Everything was delicious and the beers were very generous in size. Only improvement point would be one of the lady's room toilets was clogged. read more

This place exceeded my expectations. It is a stones throw from the Tower of London which made it the perfect stop after a recent tour. Very close to several tube stops as well. #5 on the London Bridge to Tower Bridge DW ale trail is The Walrus & The Carpenter. The name alone makes it amazing. Although it's a Nicholson's pub, it's able to stand on it's own being full of charm and wittiness. Last time I lived here I strolled past during class, then went back on a Sunday meaning it was closed due to St. Paul's restricted hours/church/religious thing reasons. It's in a great location, a wonderful building, the dinning room is name 'Lewis Carroll' and it's nice and conveniently by The Monument. I believe there was a large step to get inside of the pub, but I may have been wrong. I'm not too sure how the wheelchair access is here, if it's a big concern I'd call first to check. The staff are very friendly, when we arrived the kitchen had actually been closed but they graciously still let us take our pints and spend the rest of the evening alone upstairs. Which was enormous! Perhaps one of the biggest dinning rooms I've seen in a Nicholson's pub yet, but I can't be quoted as I haven't been to all of them (I'm getting there though). Excellent for groups if you beat all the suites first. Again, same menu/drink list. They have seasonal ales and you can try before you buy. We found the atmosphere excellent, and were very sad when they had to close. Another fabulous thing are the restrooms, they have even more charm than the pub itself! They truly are like little original powder rooms, wonderfully carpeted with the looking glass and sinks, girly wallpaper making you feel right at home (at least in the ladies). Due to it being surrounded by business I'm sure this pub gets a lot of people in the after work hours. Yet don't let that scare you away! Give it a shot, it's worth ending the evening here. read more

This is what I consider to be an English Pub. Decor was nice and staff very friendly offering several suggestions for food as well as beer! They will give you samples of all the lagers if you're unsure without any attitude. I opted for the NICHOLSON'S BURGER. It was great and definitely big enough to share with another person. Had onion rings and fries and they were great as well! My daughter ordered the Toad in The Hole, which is a Yorkshire pudding with sausage and mashed potatoes and other vegetables. So if you are looking for some great food and a friendly environment, give The Walrus and The Carpenter a try, you won't regret it! I used to drink here from time to time when I had a client right 'round the corner. What can I say? It does the job, no more nor less. It's somewhat filled with "pubby" tat. Though, on a Summer's day there's a massive place to stand around and drink in the sun surrounded by 1,000 people all of whom make more money than you. Or me. This place met and exceeded all expectations. My sister and I wanted to go to a pub before we left London and we are so glad we chose this place. I ordered the Oceans Fish and Chips and it was so yummy! My sister ordered a chicken pie of some kind. The pie was super tasty and had the best gravy in the world for the potatoes. In addition, my sister and I needed help with something and the manager and waitress that helped us came through and was amazing. Went here for drinks with colleagues, nice place , good drinks, most of the time very crowded.

Good food but incredibly slow. Took our waitress an hour and a half for just fish and chips and she forgot our order three times.

Great food, but the pub itself is the real attraction here. Excellent beer selection and a fun environment. I will be stopping in again.

Tucked away slightly from the hustle and bustle of Monument, The Walrus & Carpenter doesn't see many carpenters these days but it's still a pretty down to earth boozer. read more
