I'm going to admit it. I like hospitals.
That doesn't mean I enjoy being cut on by doctors, but hey. If it's going to happen anyhow, there's worse places.
I will spare you the details, but I was in for day surgery.
Checking in at the front counter, the staff were both friendly and efficient. They had a lot of people to go through, but I didn't have time to fill in the two page questionnaire before my number was called. Money changed hands, forms were signed, and a friendly volunteer was escorting me to my doom.
The waiting room was reasonably friendly, segregated into a TV area, and another darker, quiet zone. Chairs were comfy, and it almost had a loungeroom feel.
This is where the waiting really began. You're on the surgery conveyor belt (my surgeon was operating out of two theatres, letting him operate while the other was being prepped), and the nurses and other staff are the little, friendly cogs moving you along.
Once escorted deeper inside it started looking more like a hospital. TJ was my chipper nurse prepping me for what was to come. More questions, changing into some sexy hospital clothes, then eventually led to a reclining couch with a choice of magazines. Would I like a hot blanket? Yes please!
It wasn't long before I was led to a bed. They got me comfy, nabbed an orderly to extend the length of the bed (apparently I'm too tall) then I lay and waited, chatting to more friendly nurses, getting more warm blankets, and eventually visited by my surgeon, anaesthetist, and some nervous looking medical students who would be observing my procedure.
Eventually I was wheeled through, met a few of the theatre staff before being jabbed in the arm and awaking moments later in the recovery ward.
Yes please, I'd love another warm blanket. And yes, pain killers.
From here I was wheeled to another ward where I could sleep a while, grab a sandwich, then get dressed and be escorted home.
Over all, the staff were efficient and super friendly, and the hot blankets were amazing. Not quite as amazing as the ham cheese and tomato sandwich I was fed. read more
