I was in Austin for a conference and stumbled on this bar thanks to Yelp. I truly enjoyed every minute of the experience, and my tasty Old Fashioned which was a perfect choice to compliment the atmosphere. The bar tenders are super friendly and the place is eclectic, dark and decorated in a vintage style. They also have the best t-shirts I have ever seen at a bar. I was bummed that the Excite Bike 80s Nintendo themed shirt was sold out in my size because I'd be rocking that all the time. 4.5. The Wheel is our go to spot any day of the week. The owner always has the most unique, highly rated beers on tap usually before you can grab them anywhere else in Austin. And they have quite a cocktail selection. I suggest you try the Molly which is made with Colorado High Vodka infused with beets, jalapeño, ginger beer and lime juice. It's a spicy citrus version of a Moscow mule. They make it there on site and let it sit for 72 hours before serving. They always play amazing vinyls and the patio is perfect even on the hottest day. I'm so lucky to have them as our neighborhood bar. The ladies restroom is always kind of dirty and has an odor. Other than that, this place is a gem. read more

Went there this past weekend with friends and really enjoyed myself! I really like their inside decor and the bartender was awesome! We sat outside because the weather was beautiful and for a small patio area they crammed a lot of seating in there. Thankfully it doesn't feel like it. My one and only complaint would be that the beer pours were pricey in my opinion. Glad they have a pretty good craft beer selection though! They had a 10 oz pour of bomb for $10. The 12oz bottle is around that price. I will for sure come again to come try out some of their mixed drinks! read more

In a town exploding in size and popularity, The Wheel retains a strong neighborhood feel. The bartenders are extremely friendly and seemed genuinely interested in conversation beyond just your tip. They definitely specialize in cocktails so I would probably look elsewhere if you are looking for a nice draft or bottle of Shiner. I had 2 different specialty cocktails, both of which were good but definitely on the pricier side ($10-$15 each). They have a large patio space for meeting up with friends and the indoor bar is intimate enough to make it a decent first date spot worth checking out. read more

Nice little spot on MLK east side. Bicycle-themed bar with a whole lotta whiskey. Me likey whiskey. Small and very dark interior (a little too dark in my opinion), nice but small patio with about 6 picnic tables and 3-4 high 2tops. They have a pretty cool water fountain made from craft beer taps (you can run them on and off!). A smaller version of the Bulldog in NOLA. The offer a whiskey of the day as a special, have ~6 beers/ciders on tap, and plenty of bicycle parking for the hipsters who ride their bike to the bar. You can also pump up your tires, if you're in need of that type of thing. Bicycle themed throughout, I like this bar, but I may not if it was super crowded. read more

Parking can be troublessome, and space is limited, but easy to have a good time here. More of a hangout spot than a sports bar. No TV, limited beer selection that runs out quickly (both IPA kegs tapped out on a random Tuesday night), and no food. You come here to let the night get away from you and order some strong cocktails. Lots of outdoor space is cool and bring your own food is actually a plus in my book. Beer selection 8 on draft, but good prices at $7/ish per big pour. Everyone is nice and vibe seems 20s-30s clientele. I liked the Wheel for what it is, a good starting point nearby my apartment to begin a drinking night. read more

This place was a complete surprise. I was staying across the street for a business trip, and thought I'd go to this mysterious, even kinda scary-looking bar. I waked in and felt like I was at Cheers. The bartenders were funny, talkative, and friendly, and their banter with customers was entertaining and smart. They were so much fun! Aaron (so?) was a real kick as he was about as friendly and funny as they come, and simply a great guy. And their customers reacted by being funny as well. We had a long conversation about movies that had people debating what was Tom Cruise's best movie, but ranging far beyond Cruise. They had a nice selection of beer (including one if my favorites, Lagunitas Lil' Sumpin') on tap, and one if the best Manhattans I've ever had. I stopped in for a quick drink @7:00 and didn't leave until 11:30. 'Course, having terrific Tex-Mex food from The Loop News next to the bar helped. Can't wait to visit again. read more

The Wheel is my favorite place to get a drink in town. It's cool and hip, but also laid back and chill. There isn't music blasting, and it's usually chill enough that you can talk to your friends without yelling! Isn't that kind of the point for a neighborhood hangout? OK - lets talk the drinks... The beer selection of maybe 10-12 taps is always good and interesting. There are always a couple of nice hoppy choices, a sour or two, something seasonal, and a couple cool experiments from the local breweries. There is a whiskey of the day for 4 bucks, and if you are a whiskey noob like me, it is a fun and cheaper way of trying out a few of em. The cocktails I have tried or stolen a sip from a friend have all been great. The Madison is my go to - a fun twist on an Old Fashioned. And if you're hungry go ahead and order some food at Austin Daily Press and they will deliver to your table.. the Jalapeno Hush Puppies and the housemade chips are great bar snacks! Also, if you don't have access to laundry at your place, you should probably start up a load next door, and come have a drink while you wait :) read more

Plus, it's within walking distance to my house. #bonus They have a variety of beers and house specials that will appease the pickiest of drinkers and a small patio (complete with astroturf) where you can hang around with your friends and even your pooch. I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride my bike. I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride it where I like. I kept repeating this song in my head because my co-worker said we were meeting "at The Bicycle, near the laundromat at the corner of Chicon and MLK with a great sandwich place next door." I turned into this lot and saw him waving his hands because it is not The Bicycle, but The Wheel (of the Bicycle) and it was not bad at all. There's a sweet fountain outside dripping water from about 20 draft beer spouts. They have a whiskey of the day that you can have doctored as you like and 6-8 beers on draft. In trying to decide between the Milk Stout and an adult cocktail I probably would have opted for the Milk Stout if I'd known it was a cool $10 for that fancy tequila number. My brain says "eastside! dive bar! go nuts!" but the reality is "eastside! classy dive bar! it's 'spensive." Framed pictures of people on bicycles abound inside. I managed to catch Einstein on my way out. Maybe he would have liked to chat about this place's theme, or the pleasant little patio, or how I'm willing to pay $10 for a drink at Peche (no I'm not, I go during the $5 happy hour) but $10 on the eastside seems a little outrageous. This place is super hip, and, honestly, the bartenders weren't too friendly to me even though I was sitting at the bar. There were maybe three other patrons there. They were actually gossiping loudly about other bartenders, which I found off putting even though I don't work in that industry. I really, really appreciate the whiskey night here- it's a good deal and a good way to try new whiskeys. I hear the cocktails are good, but I'm not much of a cocktail girl. Although the bartenders weren't the most welcoming, as the bar filled up (and boy did it) I got to have some really nice conversations with some other patrons. Dammit. I've been trying not to review this place because I love it, and I want to keep it from becoming the new place where all the bros migrate once they get tired of Rainey and West 6th. Alas, I must give credit where credit is due. The Wheel opened in my neighborhood not that long ago, and it has been consistently spectacular. All of the bartenders rock. Their specialty cocktails are delicious. They are happy to make anything else that you like (get. an. old. fashioned.). The inside is always pretty dark but lively. The outdoor area has a beer tap water fountain that's stylin' and profilin'. They've added a nice cover, some new furniture, some fencing, and (for the winter) heaters. Also, ADP will deliver over here, which is so clutch when you need some carbs. read more

One might call the location divey, but the inside is classy and upscale without being stuffy or trendy/over the top. The interior is intimate, appropriately low-lit (let's be honest, we all kind of love that) with several spirit specials each day that seem to be carefully chosen as well as 8 or so local select beers on tap. They've got a small lot, a great atmosphere that makes it easy to find friends, and clean bathrooms that don't feel like an afterthought. The bartenders are personable, polite, and cheerful, and the space is small enough to be great for an empty night (although I hope that it doesn't get too popular too quickly) and is great for lounging. No televisions, no loud people screaming (except that one friend, you know), and nothing sticky or dirty (yet, at least). I envision this place great for gatherings on the patio at the picnic tables or perfect for a date over low lighting with choice drinks, and the location is easy to roll up to and all doors are open for good flow inside and outside! Looking forward to the future of this space and their growth in this neighborhood. read more

Went on a bar crawl with a friend and this was the last bar we copied up to. Our bartender, Adam, was friendly and personable and mixed up some fine cocktails. I love a guy who can help you pick the perfect drink and serve it up with a smile. The bar is smallish, but plenty of room for the crowd assembled that night. The decor is cute, the outdoor area is also nice, although we were enjoying the indoor A/C on this particular night. Unfortunately, last call came sooner than I would've like, but it just means we will have to visit again. I can't wait for cooler weather to enjoy the outdoor patio. read more

Well I guess it puts me in the minority, but I wasn't impressed with the drinks or menu here. The ambiance was kind of divey chic, and was cool, but the drink menu was extremely limited with nothing really interesting me particularly. I tried the Layla and the Lyllian neither which were very good unfortunately. Service was relaxed yet attentive, but nothing special. They mainly had cheaper bottom mid-shelf whiskeys and bourbons, of which the whiskey of the day each day was always one of the low end ones, so I wouldn't come here for a neat spirit either. My my my. This place is a breath of fresh air. I unfortunately have to admit that I started the evening at sour duck. MISTAKE. Overpriced, overcrowded and terribly unfriendly service. After a drink there, my wife and I ventured here and were greeted by pleasant, friendly and upbeat staff. The drinks were poured correctly (sour duck underpours awfully. doesn't take much to learn how to pour properly.) anyways -- prices are fair, staff is great and the playlist is a bangin' throwback. We really liked this bar. It was laid back with just the right amount of a dark and cool atmosphere. I had a great Manhattan made with the whiskey of the day and everyone else seemed very pleased with their choices.
