When I approached the counter to pay (with my bottle of Haha), I was asked if I would like to sample a French red for $19 a bottle. I accepted and was requested to stand behind the counter to taste, due to liquor licence laws. We had a great chat about the French wines and I was nearly inspired to buy that bottle too! I was highly impressed with the price and brands of the wine being sold, sometimes even less expensive than the supermarket! Wine Direct also have a store in Parnell.

I'm a really indecisive person, and these gentlemen have helped me choose what to drink many a time, and I have never been disappointed. My most recent discovery was the Cranberry Lime Old Mout Cider. Kiwi Liquor has the entire Old Mout range available, and for a great price. Only nine dollars a bottle! Good discounts are always on offer at Kiwi Liquor. I have never been there and not managed to get a good deal on whatever alcohol I purchase. Though Kiwi Liquor is a relatively small liquor store but manages to stock a wide range of beverages. Beer, wine, spirits, and cider - every drink you could want can be found in this store, including the great little hand-painted tequila skulls that are currently popular. If you're in Ponsonby and in need of alcohol, don't bother paying big bucks at the Super Liquor a few stores down, head in to Kiwi Liquor instead for a bargain and a friendly enjoyable experience!

Either way, the shop looks a bit out of place, tucked away just off the road on the cool end of Ponsonby in amongst the trendy restaurants and hipster stores. They've got a good selection of alcohol in here, including cans of Rekorderlig in every flavour--something I've not seen anywhere else and a welcome change to the bulky glass bottles and the majority of the stuff is already refrigerated, so good if you want to start drinking it right away. It's reasonably priced and the staff are friendly. Just try to ignore the smell.

First and foremost, the quality of the staff, at each of the locations is most positive. Though this location is where I purchase the overwhelming bulk of my wines, and have actually stored many cases of wine here for years at no additional charge, I have visited many of the area stores, and have consistently found the staff to be knowledgeable, friendly and helpful at all locations. Obviously there is a positive ethos inculcated from the top management and it carries throughout. The selection of wines, obviously heavy in New Zealand wines, but also from every part of the world attests to their thoroughness in offering their customer what they desire. In addition, they offer an extensive selection of spirits, most notably, whiskeys, also from all over. Prices are most fair, and usually undercut what the wineries offer for sale at their cellar door by 5-10%. There are always specials, based by promotional buys, etc. Gift wrapping is available and graciously promoted at no additional charge. Credit charge usage does not incur any additional fee. This location has recently installed a full-service café to satisfy those caffeine and pastry cravings. Parking is ample, both on their lot and on the street a few steps from their front door.

The shop assistant seemed knowledgeable enough, and managed to find a suitable bottle of plonk for mummy dearest, from the reputable wine region of ze Hawkes Bay. There was quite a collection there, from the pricier French Wines all the way through to the cheaper homegrown stuff. They even courier all their product nationwide for a measly two bucks fifty. We were in the store for some time as she continued to argue on the phone. We were never greeted or acknowledged while we were there as she continued to shout on the phone even while she rang us up. We paid and walked out noting to remember to write a review on this bad service we received.
