Came here after seeing them on ktla. Appetizer actually was really good. Paella was okay. Chef came out and made a nice appearance which really helped the whole vibe. Service was nice at the end but only the end. Courtney overcharged us on a 300 + bill and at the end on and said if we could wait to get the charge reversed or wait and get a free beer. We wanted to go home of the bill and all she offered was a beer to go. If the manager is too busy and you can't reverse a false payment right away then Honestly would not go back even though the food was good :( I work in a restaurant and the only reason I'm leasing a review is if it was me personally I would immediately get the issue resolved and due to our standard of service I would rectify the error. Tried this spot with my family and we really enjoyed it. The food exceeded expectations! I got a burrito as a bowl and I can't remember what it was called but it had tri tip and brisket inside with scramble eggs! It was so so good. We shared a steak and egg burrito and I had an OC juice-- oh my goodness that was one of the best breakfasts I have had. The burrito steak and burnt ends were so flavorful, and the juice was fresh. I am gluten free so dining out for breakfast/brunch/lunch is challenging. I had the waffles (gluten free), tacos, shrimp & grits and much more and everything is absolutely amazing. Service was great. Loved the ambiance inside. Food was just meh, except for the green healthy drink, which I normally like. My husband's lemonade was good, but overpowered by lemon (granted it was a fruit flavored lemonade, but the fruit was difficult to taste. However if you need citric acid, this drink packs a punch!) The basque cheesecake looked like it would be amazing. But the recipe isn't quite there--the berry compote needed a little more tart, and the cheesecake itself wasn't as soft as I would like (this might just be a temperature issue.) Having said all of this, it's a new restaurant, so maybe they will improve, or maybe the chef was having an off day. My husband said his brunch burrito was decent. We sampled the following curated drinks/bites from Chef Michael: Eternal Life & OC Juice Agua Frescas Smoked Carnitas Brunch Burrito The N'oreasters Blue Corn Waffle Tropical Thunder BCW Every bite was delicious with the stand outs (to me) being the N'Oreaster and the Brunch Burrito. The salsa that was served in the gold pot on the side was one of the best salsas I've ever had - and a perfect compliment to the burrito. Service staff was incredibly welcoming, friendly and well informed about the menu - appreciated their patience answering our questions and paying attention to allergies, etc. The space felt clean, bright and homey. The waitress seemed like she had a lot going on and forgot to bring the butter for my "zucchini bread" til we were already finished. I love this spot for brunch. Food has great flavors, awesome ingredients and doesn't have random fillers. The juice flight tasted so healthy and fresh. This place is amazing! I went today for lunch with my husband. He works at a nearby hotel and loves trying out all the Dana Point restaurants because he gets asked constantly where to eat nearby. This is definitely going to the top of his list. The vibe inside is very laid back. Perfect ambiance for a restaurant close to the beach. All the staff was welcoming and our waitress was so nice. I ordered the steak and egg burrito and it was so good. It was very large and full of delicious tri tip, fluffy eggs, potatos and a sauce I am still thinking about. My husband got the shrimp polenta dish. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and it was honestly some of the best polenta I've had. The menu is unique and I can't wait to come back and try more of it. I also got a horchata latte that was so delicious it tasted like a rice pudding (in the best way possible.) My husband got the $2 coffee because what place can you get a cup of coffee for $2?!? It was strong but still tasty. They also have a large selection of gluten free items to choose from that all looked delicious. We have been several times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Really liked it the first couple times. I was so excited to tell all my friends. Fast forward a few weeks, and my enthusiasm and my rating has waned...it has been a mixed bag. Had a decent bfast burrito, and then delicious fish tacos the first couple visits. I told all my friends how good they were~lots of fish, hot and flavorful. The next time we went, I got an egg scramble that was flavorful but not hot. I mentioned it to the server and they just replied, "oh". My husband had a breakfast sandwich this week that was tasty, but not hot. They recently began a "Taco Tuesday", so we wanted to try that. It was not listed on the menu, so asked and was told it was any two of their regular tacos for $10. However, they were different than the regular ones ~no toppings, but still a tasty, generous portion of meat and fish. So, we go again a couple weeks later on Taco Tuesday. Again, no mention of it on the menu or from the server. We asked and they said yes, any two tacos from the regular menu. So, he got the trip tip and carnitas tacos. They were good~with generous portions of meat. I got a fish and a shrimp taco. Was very disappointed in both. The fish taco had the tiniest piece of fish, adjacent to a spoonful of COLD tuna salad. It was a bizarre combination, and not what I expected. I asked the server about it. She that is what they are serving on Taco Tuesday now. Trying to save money, I think. The other taco had 3 small shrimp. Three bites of shrimp is not satisfying. So, we are going to take a break from White Rooster. read more
