36 District Court located in downtown Detroit…read more A large Square windowless building with minimal air circulation makes you very claustrophobic. It works pretty much like a factory. This Court serves everything from landlord tenant to Minor felonies. You will see people standing in line at counters on every floor. Each floor has its own designated Court system that it services. You will find real estate at one desk. landlord tenant at another desk. You will find probation department at a different desk. You will find traffic fines at a different desk. If you are coming to this building please be sure you visit their website to find out what items are not allowed in the building. I can tell you that they do not allow cell phones, ink pens, and no food or water. It is best if you only bring your ID wallet and car key if necessary. This court handles lots of cases and they get you through as quickly as they can. Please be patient with the bailiffs and also the court Personnel or they may possibly lock you up. I saw someone arguing in the hall and suddenly the court security personnel pulled out handcuffs and the police came and escorted the person into a holding cell at the end of the hall. If you are here for landlord tenant go to the second floor to the information desk for information about your case. The legal clinic is on the 4th floor and it is not open everyday. You need to be sure that you understand what documents you can bring in and in what form before you come to this building. Always Be sure you look it up on 36 District Court website because they give specific information that changes almost daily.

Unfortunately, my experience at this Hamtramck location was extremely disappointing. The employee I dealt with, Tina, was dismissive and unhelpful from the beginning. I asked a simple question about getting a label, and instead of assisting, she made the process unnecessarily difficult and confusing. I was told I needed to purchase tape, was charged for it, and never even received it. When I asked for a receipt, she did not provide one. At that point, I decided I didn't feel comfortable continuing the transaction. I asked for a supervisor, and the number I was given did not work. When I requested that she contact a supervisor directly, she refused. Another employee nearby did not step in to help resolve the situation either. Instead of trying to fix the issue, I was ultimately told they would not ship my package after already taking payment. The situation escalated further when I was threatened with the police over a situation that should have been handled professionally from the start. Given the volume of shipments we handle every month, reliability and professionalism are extremely important to us. Because of this experience, we will not be using this location moving forward and will be taking our business to another shipping facility. In addition to Baird, there is the Old Wayne County Jail and the William Dickerson Detention Facility. This jail is newer and in some ways, cleaner, than others. But it has many of the problems that are prevelent in other urban jails. As a social worker I occassionally visit detention facilities and, frankly, I've seen better. The process for visits is very chaotic and traumatizing to both the inmates and the family members. Staff are rude to visitors, professionals (like myself) who are entering the facility on business, and even to each other. It's hard to find visitng hours for this facility, so I'll paste them in here. Monday: Last names starting with A through H (7:30 am until 10:30 am) Tuesday : Last names starting with A through H (6:00 pm until 9:00 pm) Wednesday: Last names starting with I through Q (7:30 am until 10:30 am) Thursday: Last names starting with I through Q (6:00 pm until 9:00 pm) Friday: Last names starting with R through Z (7:30 am until 10:30 am AND 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm Saturday: Minor child visitation with approval and by appointment only. Children often get arbitrarily turned away from visits, even when they already have approval and have an appointment.

"This building opened in 1922 and was designed by the firm Baxter, O'Dell & Halpin. The building has been vacant for decades, including 10 years under ownership of the Ilitch family, which paid $1.5 million for it in February 2007. In 1994, there were plans to turn the lodge into a nightclub, but that idea never came to fruition. In August 2017, Olympia Development of Michigan filed with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality a document calling for asbestos cleanup at the 45,000-square-foot building noting that it was headed for rehab."

It was staffed well, and they were very friendly, attentive, and accommodating. I was happy to see plenty of seating available. They even brought out more throughout the evening as the crowd grew. There were 2 food vendors and a bar available. But the music was in the driver's seat. Detroit House Collective and Sean Blackman were the perfect compliments to each other. I had a 1pm appointment today to get a reprint of my certified marriage license. I arrived at…read more1255pm only to find that I would not be called until 211pm. I explained to the clerk the reason for my visit. The clerk pulls up the marriage license application but does not see the actual license. I am so glad that I take pictures of all of my vital documents just in case something like this happens. I show the picture of the marriage license to the clerk because at this time she is asking, "did you turn it in?". I'm like ma'am I have an actual picture, so she was able to take the number from the picture and look for the license. Now me and my husband only been married for three years so why is it not in the system ma'am. Now that she has found the license she then says, "it's in another department so you'll have to wait an additional 15-20 minutes (uuggghhh!!!)". I did not get done with my 1pm appointment until 241PM. WTH is the purpose of an appointment. Come on WCRD DO BETTER!!!!

This massive block is the Theodore Levin United States Courthouse and it was completed in 1934. The…read moredesign features Art Deco and Art Modern elements. The structure includes polished black granite, fluted pilasters and sculpted eagles that symbolize its purpose as a federal building. Inside, the courthouse boasts an open central court above the second floor and houses one of its most remarkable features: the Romanesque-style Chief Judge's Courtroom. This room was salvaged from the previous courthouse at the insistence of Judge Arthur Tuttle, who oversaw its careful disassembly and reconstruction. The courtroom's marble and mahogany details were preserved in over 150 barrels and reassembled using original blueprints, making it one of the most beautiful examples of courtroom design in the country. The building is named after Judge Theodore Levin, who served as Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan from 1959 to 1967. This is also known as the Detroit Federal Building, and it was one of the sites we visited for my…read moresociology class on Detriot (which was an awesome class, by the way). It is also the place where my brother was sworn in as a US Citizen. The building is enormous -- it is the size of an entire downtown block in Detroit. For a historical building, the architecture is interesting and modern. It was the former site of Fort Shelby and the US Post Office. What I especially remember about this building were the beautiful, intricately hand painted domed walls when walking in. Sculptures by architect Parducci are also on display. As beautiful as it is, typical federal courthouse goings-on happen in there. No cell phones, no cameras, no fun. My brother was supposed to be sworn in with 200 other people at this building. However, they never called his name and he had to say, "Wait a minute! You didn't call my name!" And it took about 10 minutes for them to find his certificate in a folder, and on top of that his middle name was misspelled. It was very un-glam.
