Lunch indoors during the winter months next to the log fire or just reclining in the comfortable arm chairs is a heart warming joy. The food is always excellent, from a large yet mainly traditional British menu. They have a well stocked wine menu and plenty of guest/traditional beers & ales. The ONLY downside is that the establishment is a bit small in size (indoors) and so on popular nights can get quite cramped but in the summers months the outdoor seating helps to alleviate this problem.

The Old Vicarage is a grand looking building adjacent to a church in Branston, on the edge of Burton. The whole place as you entered had a touch of class, from relaxing in a lounge area to choose your dishes to being shown to your table only when the starters were ready, we knew we had made the right choice. We had chosen the three course option (£21.95 + supplements), and were shown into an opulent dining area with large tables, amply spaced and tastly furnished. My starter of mixed terrine including guinea fowl and rabbit, with melba toast and a sweet chutney was tasty, without being startling. The main course and dessert however, were a different story. The main of monkfish and prawns in a chilli and garlic based linguini was full of flavour, whilst my wife's seabass was cooked to perfection. Our desserts of lemon tart and a trio of chocolate desserts were arguably even better, probably the nicest white chocolate I have ever eaten! The pacing of the courses was just right and the waiting staff were friendly and helpful. Finishing off with petit fours and coffee in the lounge, it felt like the special occasion we wanted it to be. The Old Vicarage is not cheap, but serves great food in wonderful surroundings.

At first I was hesitant because of the somewhat pretentious descriptions of the dishes on the menu (which usually indicate tiny portions). The starter was tiny indeed, but the main dish, Gressingham duck breast with mixed vegetables, was adequate in size. Both starter and mains were nicely presented and very tasty, especially the duck breast, and the vegetables even more so. Not too many options on the menu, which is usually a good sign. The waiter was extremely welcoming and helpful, he even gave me a leaflet of the brewery whose beers ("real lagers") the restaurant offers - from the bottle only. The beer (see photo) was indeed excellent. It's a really small place, no more than 20 seats I gather. They close fairly early, and when I visited at about 9 p.m. only three tables were occupied. No one came in after me. The decor is stylish but without frills. Very good food and service at an elevated, but certainly not outrageous price. Recommended to inhabitants and visitors of this two-horse town, which was once the beer capital of the world.

No complaints about the food either - the menu has steak, belly pork, lamb shank each with some unusual addition to add interest to the flavour. My starter of back pudding with rabbit and mustard sauce was very tasty. The wine was expensive but otherwise all very pleasant, if slightly formulaic. But we stood at the bar with a drink and admired the beautiful husky that was visiting the pub and after 20minutes were seated. The food was absolutely delicious and cannot be faulted in any way. The only reason why I've not given 5 stars is because I was really looking forward to a lamb shank and unfortunately they had sold out and hadn't told me when I sat down. The service was very pleasant and we were even offered extra gravy half way through our meal which I think is a great touch. Great pub, not cheap but definitely worth every penny.

A good variety of outdoor seating, both at the front of the pub and in prime location next to the canal, perfect for a summer's evening! Inside the pub is modern and spacious, with pictures adorning the walls from Willington in bygone times. We visited on a Bank Holiday and the Dragon was very busy with diners and drinkers alike, sheltering from the incessant rain! Menu wise, a good variety of dishes, both traditional and more modern. As it was so busy on the evening we visited, we just went straight for the mains. We went for the 'Dragon burger' and the Moroccan Tagine; the burger was tasty enough, with a pleasant accompanying side salad and great chips. The tagine was the pick of the dishes though, full of flavour and a sizeable portion, with cous cous, but could have done with a portion of veg, but that was an extra. Other dishes included steaks, fish and chips, homemade pies etc. A good meal, and we will definitely give the starters and desserts a try on another visit.

The menu is full of proper pub food which is not trying to be something is it not. It serves honest home cooked food not like the usual chain pubs. We had fish and chips the fish was nice big beer battered and cooked just right so the fish was nice and moist and the chips were like what my nan used to cook. And we had a Chicken pie which we asked what as in it and were told just Chicken and tarragon but the chef can put in mushrooms is you like. So that tells you it is not a ping pub. The chicken in the pie was tender and very flavoursome and the veg and chips again were excellent. They have different themed nights like Ruby Tuesday for a curry and chippy tea for a Friday. All in all the pub was clean and well laid out, toilets were very clean with a very large picture of a fly fisher man on the wall (Bit strange). Staff were lovely and very attentive. All in all an excellent experience and I will say we will defiantly visit again as it is only two villages away might get a taxi next time and have a nice relaxing night out.

We were hungry, we fancied a nice pub atmoshpere, we didnt want too much fuss, and we didn't want to pay Liberia's deficit for it. Seating was easy enough, we asked at the bar whilst ordering drinks and were informed we could either order there and then or have a waitress come and take our order once we were seated. There was plenty of room although the restaurant area was far from deserted. The menu was full of steak, burgers and pasta, typical of this kind of this type of establishment, with a specials board comprising of a mixed grill and stuffed chicken. We both opted for these with a mini-combo platter as a starter as we were starving and couldn't wait to fill our boots. The food came quickly and was very satisfying. The peppercorn sauce particularly was very nice. The service was friendly, the food was nice and plentiful and the price was reasonable. All in all we were left satisfied knowing that we had made a decent choice in The Stanhope Arms that night. Will we find a better steakhouse? Probably, however..We'll Decide!

The car parks are to the side and across the road, the latter giving you a precipitous crossing of the A511, one of the busiest roads in the area! Large billboards advertise their current deals, like 2 meals £10 before 6.30pm on a weekday, but the gaudiness of the signs remind me of American fast food establishments. The restaurant is large, well lit and separated nicely into a large drinking area to the front and dining tables to the rear, with a few more private enclosed areas for larger parties, like a family meal. A comprehensive bar selection too. The menu is thorough, but unspectacular, reasonably priced but generic, with dishes like burgers, lasagne and steak being the staple dishes, with other more interesting meals being thinner on the ground. The service is good, staff are friendly and there is just the right amount of time between courses. Being a party of three and hungry, we just had some standard dishes - chilli, lasagne and a burger. The chilli and burger didn't break any culinary boundaries, but were filling nonetheless. However, the meat lasagne seemed to have lost its meat, which was disappointing. The food is not up to the standard the Stanhope was previously known for, but if you need a reasonably priced meal, you could do a lot worse than the Stanhope. However, it wouldn't be my first choice of generic eating establishments in the area.
