From these guys you get all forms of lovely design: commercial design, illustration, print (of all kinds - from clothes to menus to business cards) and web. As with all small design companies - in my experience - they are super-nice to work with and really attentive to clients. Again, as with most small outfits, they're really committed to the end result, and are great at collaboration - you don't feel like your ideas are put on the back burner while they rush off into the sunset creating something that's way off the mark. That is not what you want. Fortunately, they seem to understand this. They also deliver really professionally and really speedily: most print orders have been completed within a week. That's not to say they're shoddy: the end result is always polished. I'm just not sure that Robin and Chris actually sleep...

Easy to deal with and with amazing results the only drawback is they are so in-demand you'll be lucky to get a look in. They cover a whole range of artistic and creative practices from branding to advertising and packaging. I have been lucky enough to work with Fluid on projects before and I can say that they are professional, personable and go above and beyond to make sure that the client is completely satisfied. They have studio in Tenby Street which is in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter, a perfect location to drop in and meet with them. Ruth, the Managing Director, worked tirelessly on the PR projects we sent her way, gained us plenty of column inches, not to mention valuable air time on the BBC, worked well with the media partners, our project teams and in-house staff and all in all pulled off a very effective PR campaign, which succeeded in engaging the audience we were looking for. They're only a small team, but with a focussed, conscientious and understanding approach, they've bagged some big clients, such as Kraft Foods, Cadburys, the Big Issue and NHS local. The 'then some' being more tangible, physical things like photography and made media that they incorporate into their designs. They're a sort of mixture between a design company and an art project. Which I like a lot. It's hard to describe them properly, to be honest - the best thing that I could suggest would be to have a look at their website to get an idea of their scope. As do plenty of other people so it seems: they have worked with some fairly big names, such as the BBC, Warner Music and the New Scientist - but also really enjoy just working with individuals and on small-scale projects. Personally, I love their work: their ideas and pitches are always a breath of fresh air, not afraid to think outside the box, for want of a better term, if needs be. And of course, they're lovely people too.

They are also a lovely bunch to work with - very good at client relationships; treading that difficult line between listening to the client's needs and wants, but also inputting their own expert design ideas. They do web, print, branding and basically anything that involves design, and are fast establishing a reputation as one of Birmingham's best design companies. The reputation is well deserved: they work hard and produce great stuff. Nuff said.

I met the very recently married James and Kate through Birmingham Likemind about two years ago. Likemind (reviewed here too) is simply my favourite Friday of the month and Katie & James, until recently ran the coffee & chat morning. I love the work Supercool do but also love the attitude. I've met their interns and their employee who seem to take the same absolute pleasure in their work. I know of their design work done for Dance Xchange (who I heard raving about the work), Virgin Balloon Flights and Style Birmingham.
