Yes, there are some clothes that only ladies of a certain age should consider, but Couples is also jammed with lovelies from St Martins, Desigual and lots of little independent labels. You can spend as much or as little as your budget allows as some of the ranges are very affordable while others are for special occasions only. Even the cheaper ranges look more expensive than they actually are as they're unusual and not what you'll see in chain stores. Couples also has some funky shoes and if you've got a wedding to go to, they have fascinators and wraps too. Definitely worth a visit if you want something just a little bit different to all the other fashion dollies on the high street.

The White House is a piece of Portrush history! It has operated for over 100 years but has…read more*briefly* modernised over the years. Sadly, the building has lost most of its original features over the years like the old iron lift which has been ripped out and replaced with a modern lift. About one third of the ground floor is occupied by the massive toy department which I often find myself drifting towards whenever I walk through the doors. The other two thirds are reserved for clothing. They have managed to recruit some impressive brands and now boast Chuck Taylor, Nike and Vans to name but a few. If you go upstairs, you are greeted by more clothing but I never really notice this because my destination on this floor is always the excellent Trocadero Restaurant, which serves up a delicious meal for a good price. You can also dine in their conservatory which makes a good experience. In summer, I think they open up the balcony as well. The top floor only boasts the furniture department so I never really bother with that floor. I'm really proud of The White House for beating off competition from the likes of Debenhams and BHS, both of which had their eyes on this site. But they were never going to let that happen because they are such a strong independent company.

This is a old fashioned family run department store with lots of history. Founded, I believe in…read more1891 and can name Queen Victoria as one of its customers in years long gone by. I don't think she shopped there in person but is reputed to have ordered linens from the shop in the late 1890s, and the Prince of Wales carried on the tradition in 1903. The biggest order The White House ever took was for twenty-six suits for His Highness the Rajah of Pudukota in South India in the early part of the last century. I was amazed recently to see that The White House was still going strong and to keep in step with modern trends it stock lots of the top selling high street brands in men's, ladies and childrens clothes. Long may this tradition shop keep up the standards and ethics of a small local business.

Should have known that really from the name of the place, shouldn't I? We went in when the husband took a notion for a Barbour coat and a colleague told me that Smyths has a good selection. And indeed the colleague was quite right. Not only did they have a good selection in stock, but the shop owner also offered to source other styles and sizes and post them to us. How's that for customer service? There's also a wide range of gloves, jumpers and waterproofs, caps and fleeces, as well as Swiss army knives that made the sons' eyes pop. The shop owner was also more than patient when the sons insisted on lifting and poking at things no matter how many times I told them not to. Full marks to this shop for good old fashioned customer service. There are many shops that could learn a thing or two from Smyths.

If they don't have your colour or size they will try to get it for you. The staff are very courteous and polite and can't do enough to help you. Its great to just call in and browse or go for something specific.

Unfortunately they are priced slightly outside of my budget but I can dream! I only ever buy in their sale which is always very good with excellent discounts. The lady in the shop is a hoot and will keep you in chat while you try on shoes of all different styles. Stone is the kind of shop that I promise myself I will get all my clothes from when I'm a grown up…read more No more quick fixes from Top Shop and no more fashion forward bits from Zara. And then I realise that I am married with children so indeed already a grown up but sadly without the budget to buy all my clothes from Stone. It's a beautiful shop with high end pieces so prices are also high which means that I have to be content with little bits like flip flops and t shirts from here. Stone is beautifully laid out and well stocked with Custo, Almost Famous and lots of other smaller but equally fabulous labels. It's the kind of place you would get an outfit for a wedding or a really special occasion. Tops range from £50 - £150 and dresses are up to £200 so your eyes will water at both the fabulousness of the clothes and the prices. The clothes really are gorgeous though and they look very expensive which is reassuring. Stone also sticks fab costumes jewellery which happily is much more affordable.

It is a gorgeous shop though that sells high end designer fashion, it's perfect for the people who holiday up here with that little bit more money. The most I've ever been able to afford from here was a pair of earrings, they were pilgrim and oh they're so pretty! Stone is the sort of shop you might go to for graduation wear or maybe formal attire but for the most of us who can't afford the luxuries of designer clothing every day at least we get to look at all the pretty clothing.
