Do not expect to have much assistance from their staff. They don't keep their word at all! My primary review is for the film program. I came here based on the reputation at the time of the course being better than some in the city (you know who you are). For what you paid and what the course had to offer seemed weak. The course was divided into sectionals: Lighting and camera, script writing, editing, AC, history of film, and business of film. Some teachers in the course had experience in the industry that were relevant and had a lot to offer while others were out dated. Please note that my experience compared to the current course may have changed as well as the teachers, however, I know that most of these are still in existence 'cause I have some of my friends nieces currently enrolled. Through conversation with them I feel that situations have not changed. Of course names will not be mentioned as that is irrelevant to the review. Editing: Bi-polar teacher that was supportive one moment and screaming at your the next for no reason. Not enough computers to go around to encourage or allow students to work on projects. History of film: You watch movies all day, something that I can do on my own for free on Netflix. Teacher was sexiest. Script Supervising: One of the most valued courses for me. I have an eye for mistakes and love the technical side of things in regards to continuity. Aside from a PA on major productions, for independent movies I did a lot of script supervising. Teacher was warm, knowledgeable and she made things make sense. Camera & Lighting: Learned some basics, however, with new lenses, editing and lighting this soon became an outdated course. The basics still hold value today. Business of Film: Teacher had an awesome sense of dark sarcasm and humor, we got along great. After learning about the business, financial numbers seen very interesting to you. I found that the course had way too many fresh out of high school kids who either didn't know what they wanted, thought they could be the next Lucas, still had some high school tendencies. I was a bit older than them and established myself a bit more to mature and grow before finding my way. There weren't enough people that were my age or slightly adult who took the course as seriously as they should. This partially ruined my learning experience. I was 4 years older than most of the students and still too young for the few adults. Way too much drama and high school attitude that most of my classmates carried through in their adult life. Because of this I didn't get a lot out of this during the projects as I felt were owed to me. This is a flaw with the admissions portion as mentioned before, not the students themselves. As mentioned, even if you have a demo tape. If you had the money or a scholarship, you were in. No real filtering of students who would actually elevate or make the course. Plus, it gave me even more reason to hang out downtown. [end flashback] Taking classes in the Writing and Publishing program this past year gave me a reason to go back and experience it through adult eyes, and while the views and amenities are still there, I gotta say, I wasn't so impressed. At one point I dropped a course because it fell into the realm of irrelevance. I know I can go back and finish the certificate program anytime in the next year, heck I even have cash credit towards another course... but I likely won't use them. It's not that there isn't valuable information to be learned here, it's that it's not tax deductible. Not tax deductible? Isn't post secondary education considered deductible? Well, not according to the letter I received this week saying they had wrongly issued me a T2202E... That's the second time in my SFU career that their admin department has screwed up costing me money, time and suffering in the tax department. Once it even resulted in me being audited... as a student! I want to scream at the top of my lungs, "Get it together! You're an institution!" But I refrain, I have to save my energy for another looming accountant bill which is where this path leads. Hindsight is 20/20, and the grass is always greener at UBC.

In any case, when you sign up for a course here, you not only get a lot of great information from instructors who are professionals in their fields, you also get a course package that includes all the books and materials required, note paper, even pens and pencils. One intensive two-week workshop I took even included a dinner and fireworks cruise in the tuition fee. There are also plenty of free events put on throughout the year, such as author talks, that you can attend just by signing up. The campus is compact, but it's quite nice, and there are coffee shops in the building and just around the neighbourhood for getting to know your classmates better. SFU Harbour Centre is great for continuing ed - convenient, safe, and attractive.

The representative was very polite, had no problem answering my questions about the community and classes along with the tuition and gave me lots of helpful insight like how long the course takes and what higher level courses they offer once you finish the first and want to progress up. The reason I picked VCC was because of their culinary courses and the representative sold me on my choice with VCC. He was able to exceed my expectations and even offered a personal tour of the entire kitchen from him.

I was told by two employees that neither had been trained to do gift card transactions with the new system. Coming from North Burnaby, this a bit time wasting. When I was able to purchase my materials, I realized I was missing two items from the kit I purchased; everything was originally stuffed into a canvas bag in disarray so you could barely navigate through it to double check everything. Granted, the kit that I bought included 20+ items so I shouldn't be too upset. It's just the fact that I had to trek all the way to the downtown campus to pick up books and materials weighing well over 10lbs and trekking home again just to realize I'm still missing items. But overall I'm not too upset just a little annoyed. The customer service I got from other employees was sincere and friendly. First impressions mean a lot, but it isn't everything.

There are some really fine people there. They are very accepting and knowledgeable in their fields. There are no complaints, only praise. Most of my issues come from dealing with the administration staffs, particularly the people in charge of student registration. Most of them seem either very unhappy and just plain dismissive. My dad was rejected domestic tuition despite his PR status still being valid and is renewing. The person in charge didn't even let him explain and immediately just decided to disallow him to register in some courses. He had to contact another person who is a senior supervisor to get it sorted out. Immigrants have to through this sort of bureaucracy everyday and to see it happen in an institution of learning is disheartening. Regardless, it won't affect my opinion of VCC. I still think it is a great place for post-secondary education. I just hope that the staff will be more caring and mindful in the future.
