Parking is easy to find in the nearby parking lots. The lunch specials are very reasonably priced and portions are decent. I had the Cashew Chicken which came with white rice. Good food. Management need to add more staff. While the food is enjoyable, it seems the manager is trying to run on a shoestring budget. The wait staff was running around welcoming new guests and trying to serve food. We waited a very long time between courses and decided to skip desert and drinks because of the time delay. I asked if they were short staffed and he said there were three waiters. We only saw two. You know those reviews that start off saying something along the lines of, "Full disclosure- I'm biased because..." and then it's usually followed by something along the lines of, 'I work here' or 'my neighbor is the owner'' or some other close ties to the restaurant? Don't you hate those? Well, my apologies in advance... because this is one of them. Full Disclosure: I'm biased because...drumrolldrumrolldrumroll... I LOVE THAI FOOD!!! Okay, so my connection might not be as straightforward as the examples above, but in my defense I'd like to say that though I did not have the pleasure of growing up very close to Thai food, that I do feel love for it like a mother loves it's child and because I eat lots of Thai food every day, my belly is *technically* growing because it's 'living' inside me. A di-gestation period, if you will... and by way of Bangkok, no less (hehe). Now, what happens after the di-gestation period is something I'll leave for another conversation. My history with Thipi Thai started off several years ago at their location in downtown Glen Ellyn. I had never tried Thai food before, but after seeing the super cute Elephant logo on the front awning and thinking: "Gee, that would be a swank-azz tattoo." ***sidebar*** Just to be clear on that, I mean a tattoo that is swank-azz (kind of like 'bad-ass'), not a swank tattoo that would go on my ass. ***end sidebar*** After that, the timeline went a little something like this: 1- Candice tries Thai food for the first time 2- Candice's mind is blown 3- Candice heads promptly to the city to get that magical Thai elephant logo tattooed on her body (NOT booty). 4- Candice gets a little hooked on tattoos and within 5 months has 2 more... of the same Elephant logo/design, but in various locations on her body- still not the ass, booty or pooper, as I understand some (me) like to call it. 5- Candice discovers there's a second location in La Grange and decides to give it a try... but the restaurant falls short of her high now high Thai expectations and she decides not to return, and to forever hold her peace (not write a review). ...sadness... Flash-forward a few years and Candice hears that the La Grange location has moved around the corner to larger digs. Candice decides to forgive and forget the not-so-hot (literally, not spicy at all) experience she had years earlier and give the new and hopefully improved Thipi Thai location another try. Huzzah!!! A VAST improvement on all levels with the only exception being that now that the restaurant is larger, the food takes longer (much longer than at most super speedy Thai locales), but I don't mind waiting for quality. The food made me feel like a proud mother again. Well, maybe more like a proud mutha. And the ambience of the restaurant, no enormous in comparison to the old location and dimly lit with cozy banquette style booths made complete by the accompaniment of pillows made from Thai silks, and LOTS more swank-azz tattoo worthy elephant art. Now, I know that as Mother I'm not supposed to choose favorites, but between you and I, Tom Yum and Spicy Basil Leaves with Tofu are VERY near and dear to my heart. Stopped for dinner here on a Saturday evening. We were seated right away as there was no wait time. The ambience is great and the decor is beautiful. Wood carvings, elephants in all shapes and forms, buddhas adorn the hallways and the walls. Some of the pieces are really beautiful. The service was a little slow but the food more than made up for it. We ordered the Tom Yum soup with shrimp, green curry vegetables with tofu and lemon grass dish with tofu. All of the food was fresh, flavorful and delicious! My favorite was the green curry - it was unique becos it had thin slices of sweet potato in it and that kind of elevated that dish for me. For whatever reason, I've been on a Thai kick lately. Perhaps it's because I deprived myself of all things carbs and fats to squeeze into my wedding dress. Now that the wedding is all said and done, I've treated myself here and there. Moderation, right? Anyhow - Thipi Thai is my new favorite Thai place. Hands. Down. There's nothing I loathe more than greasy, over MSG'd Thai food - and Thipi served up just the opposite. Needless to say, these negative reviews I'm reading make me sad. I wish everyone could have had the same experience I did! Currently, I'm hard core crushing on their Mushroom Beef. As a self-proclaimed mushroom addict, this dish gives me just the fix I need. My plate was overflowing with straw mushrooms, golden mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, and enoki mushrooms...all smothered in a rich garlic gravy with beef. Other favorites: Pot stickers (crispy and fried to perfection), the tried and true Veggie Rolls, and the Nutty Noodle Chicken. I'm generally not a Pad Thai kind of girl - but Thipi's was exceptional. You would swear I was pregnant with the roller coaster of cravings I've been having lately. This week I was jonesing for all things Asian, and Thipi Thai rescued me from the gourmet spiral of hell I've been slowly slipping into since eliminating almost all restaurant excursion expenses. My GPS directed me to the old location, so I was able to get a feel of how much they have expanded. The new location is much more accessible and better suited. The decor is extravagant without being overwhelming. The ridiculously open space gives you room to breathe and the low lighting allows you to relax, slow down and catch your breath. The most gorgeous aspect is, without a doubt, the upside down umbrellas that dot the ceiling. So back to my X-rated food fantasies. Is it hot in here? Or is it just the curry? I had been dreaming all week about succulent beef bits perfectly cooked with just the right amount of oil and loaded with flavor swimming in a sea of bamboo shoots, baby corn and basil. Thipi Thai was able to accommodate with their Lemon Grass Beef ($10). I got my taste buds ready for the saucy 'splosion by splitting an order of Deep Fried Pot Stickers with Karen C. ($6). It was a new and welcomed experience, but I much prefer regular stickers. The beef dish was delicious, but they aren't kidding when they say GARLIC sauce. For some reason my expectations for Thipi Thai were pretty low. I mean, I was just expecting a small, ordinary Thai restaurant. I was really impressed when I saw the decor and size. Lots of nice wood, elephants, and a really pretty display of paper parasols on the ceiling. I have to give Renita M all the credit for suggesting Thipi Thai. Good choice! The food was really good. I met Renita for lunch and we both decided on the lemongrass beef. It was very good. I had the tom kha kai soup as well, also very good. I was surprised the soup wasn't spicy at all, it had 1 chili pepper next to it on the menu (most was 3 peppers). The service was good. Our server was very attentive but she was never bothering us, a very fine line to walk. We got there about 12:30 on a Sunday, and the place was almost empty. By the time we were leaving, about 2, they were starting to fill up. If you want the place to yourself maybe a Sunday lunch is the time to go. I really liked Thipi Thai, I'll definitely be heading back to La Grange soon to try out more of their menu and maybe take a stroll around the quaint streets of downtown La Grange. read more

Lagrange Thipi Thai is like the sibling that is always trying to compete with the older,wiser,prettier sibling but just cant quite be them. After saying that I seriously cant complain about my Thipi experience but I do still enjoy the Glen ellyn location just a touch more. Either way the food was still delishy-ous! I ate with my BF and my work BFF and her hubs. We pretty much ordered a little bit of everything, martinis on special(little green man), and of course some Thai beer. For apps we got the crab rangoon, since my bf talks about rangoons all the time and me being a veggie he never gets to order them but never fails to talk of them,dream of them and of course whine about not getting them. So since we had 2 none veggies with they ordered it up! We also go the veggie spring rolls,that were very tasty although cold and sometimes I like them better warmer but that just me,tasty none the less. Meals: spicy basil with tofu,yummy yummy in my plump tummy.This my friends is where Lagrange kicks glen ellyns arse the portions were outa control huge! I love it! Sometimes glen ellyn forces me to finish my whole meal and feel like a slob but I'm telling ya they just dont give big enough portions. Spicy basil beef,khee ma, and curry--all of which were scarfed down with enjoyment. Thai fried rice with tofu-Oh sooo good! Tons of flavor and the tofu was cooked perfectly! Came here last night for a much needed ladies' night. I was looking forward to the conversation, drinks and sharing of entrees. Luckily everyone went along with this. I ordered the Thipi Noodles for myself and sampled the Pad Thai, Cashew Chicken, and the Pad Woonsen. The Thipi Noodles and the Pad Woonsen were my favorites. The Thipi Noodles had a great blend of sweet, salty and spice with the pineapple, crispy noodles, and brown sauce. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and the flavors really came together well. We had the Pad Woonsen with chicken and medium spice and it was also really tasty. It had a smoky flavor to it that I really enjoyed. The Pad Thai was a bit of a miss for me as it was really sweet and the Cashew Chicken didn't have as much flavor as the other dishes. I had a mango smoothie to drink and it was worth every single calorie! Overall it was a great evening. The servers were very patient with us and even though they were cleaning the floors and we were the last people in the dining room, they never rushed us out the door. I will definitely be back. We stopped by for lunch today at Thipi Thai. The atmosphere is nice with Thai decorations. Although, the background music was a little loud and did not suit the environment. I would suggest some cool jazz. We split the lettuce rolls. The presentation was a little surprising with a quarter head of iceberg lettuce, some rice, mushroom chicken mixture and a sweet plum like sauce. It was tasty but we wish we would have ordered a different appetizer. My wife had shrimp and green curry. The sauce was great, a little spicy and plenty of shrimp. My daughter had the duck special, again spicy and very tasty. I had the Thai basil which was also spicy but very good. We are looking forward to trying this Resteraunt again for dinner. read more

Very cool decor, good service, tasty food. I'd never been to the old location, but I met up with lovely yelper Ms Kate M for lunch and chatting and was immediately pretty impressed -- it's very pretty and chic inside, with lots of elephants and red and sleek wood. The menu is nicely varied, with specialties and old favorites and little peppers to indicate spice-heat level. I started with jasmine tea and tom yum soup and then decided on lemongrass beef. I will say that I'm used to Thai food being a few dollars cheaper per entree than this is, but for the quality -- and the lovely decor -- it's not unreasonable. The jasmine tea was just the right temperature for drinking and I was offered refills promptly. The tom yum soup, while not quite as spicy as I've had other places, had a great flavor (and some kick -- ask Kate, I inhaled a chili pepper at one point and had a bit of a coughing fit) and was packed with mushrooms. And three lovely plump perfectly cooked shrimp, which I must admit I ate with my fingers. Hey, they still had their tails... The lemongrass beef had great flavor, plenty of veggies, and the meat was pretty tender and well-cooked. It was served with just the right portion of rice and I admit it, I polished off the whole plate. (Next time, though, I think I'll take a page from Jelena Z and ask for brown rice instead. Good idea.) I don't get to La Grange as often as I'd like, but the next time I need a classy place to meet someone in that area, you'd better believe I'll suggest Thipi Thai. I really liked this place the first time I went, I had the cashew chicken lunch special. After a few more lunches my taste for Thipi Thai has toppled. For instance, the spring rolls were strange. Instead of the usual clear wrappers most Thai places use, here you find what seems to be a moo-shu pancake filled with not very many fresh things. Plust they give you six instead of the usual two. I guess its for sharing only. I tried some other dishes, and came away disappointed. The quality is decent, but the portions are rather stingy for the price and preparation. The last time I went I had the massaman beef. Instead of a nice light brown curry of massamans nationwide, here I was presented a bowl of what looked like a mole stew, but with pineapples and cashews with the potatoes. Again, the freshness was fine, but it was a bizarre take on a solid Thai staple that left me craving a real savory beef stew -- not this sweet concoction in front of me. It's better to eat in the restaurant than to order for pick up or delivery, because the portion sizes are different. All the times we ordered for pick up/delivery, the portions are small. I've only eaten at the restaurant a couple times and the plate of Pad Thai is enormous. We ordered their Chicken Curry for delivery once, and it was little too soupy for my liking. We ended up putting it in a pot, thickening it, and adding extra spices to it. Other than that, the food is fairly authentic. Very yummy. You'll get more bang for your buck if you eat in the restaurant because you'll get what you paid for. read more

I work with a video production firm in Chicago called BMP and we have been commissioned by GroupOn to shoot 60 second merchant profiles that will promote business's on the GroupOn website. That is what lead me to Thipi Tai. Yesterday I had the pleasure of sitting down with the owner Thipi for a brief interview. I was immediately impressed by the presentation of Thipi Tai. The restaurant is immaculately clean. The decor is authentic. The vibe is relaxing. Thipi has a passion for her work and cooking that is expressed at every opportunity within her establishment. And the food is out of this world delicious! I'm not much of a fan of appetizers but the crab Rangoon & shrimp rolls definitely changed my mind! And just to be clear the shrimp rolls are actually shrimp! not some filler mix pre-made nonsense. These are handmade delicious flaky full piece of shrimp with the tail still on rolls! MMMMmmmm shrimp rolls.... The pad tai is a local favorite, and the curry dishes are fantastic. even to someone like me who doesn't favor spicy dishes. The staff are all smiles and very friendly. I don't live nearby. but I surely will be going out of my way to visit Thipi Tai again in the near future...As a matter of fact i'm gonna keep an eye out for the GroupOn deal and go ASAP! read more

I had never been to Thipi Thai before, but I understand they recently move around the block from where they were. No complaints here on the new location, it's large and pretty nice inside. The menu has a lot of tasty looking selections, and they also have a good drink menu. I decided to try one of their alcoholic concoctions...unfortunately I had a few too many of them to remember what the name of it was...but it was colorful...and tropical... I decided to go with a Garlic Chicken dish for dinner, which was really good, but I thought it was a touch small on the portion size. On the flip side, my dining partner had a pad thai dish that was a huge portion. I would definitely go back to Thipi again, I look forward to trying the rest of their menu. read more

Horrible take out experience. It took nearly an hour from order to pickup for pad Thai, pad siew, fried rice and spring rolls on a Sunday at 630. Pad Thai was so oily I could only stomach a handful of bites. Fried rice was the same, oily and mushy. Pad siew - also oily and over cooked noodles. Spring roll sauce was bland. These are basic Thai dishes, no excuse for poor execution. I've had Thipi Thai a few times, but this will be my last. Oh, and I got it home and found there was no hot sauce in the sealed bag they handed me. Big waste of $40 and I'm still hungry. read more

Wow...after reading the reviews of this Thai place, I'm thinking if we all have been to the same place. Thipi Thai is one of LaGrange's high spots. On the weekends, it's always busy with tons of families with lots of kids. The best time to eat at Thipi's is later in the evening, when you don't actually have to wait for a table. Hub and I have been to Thipi's lots of times, so I can speak to all the food. I do have my favorites, but for the most part, Thipi, the owner and executive chef, tries to stick to quality and freshness, so all her food is outstanding to me. Just a tip to those whose spice expectations are higher than the average taste bud...if it isn't spicy enough, ask for the dish to be made Thai spicy, and then be prepared. Thipi's tolerance for spice is extremely high, and she recognizes this, so when she cooks, she balances it as best she can for the average customer. She does not get insulted when you ask for more spice or more heat...but be prepared because if you get Thai spicy, you might get more than you really expected. My recommendations...appetizers, go for the Thipi platter. It gives you a well-rounded variety of the appetizers that are offered. I like the dumplings myself, but will eat all the other apps with no prob. Hub likes the coconut shrimp. We both love the soups, and especially when Thipi puts the extra Thai kick into it. It's really good for when you have a cold. An interesting twist on the 'ole standby chicken noodle soup, try the Tom Yum (ask for chicken instead of shrimp) or the Tom Kha Kai. Dinner always has many options, but there are certain dishes that we definitely stray toward every time we visit. We love the Green Curry with chicken, the Panang with chicken, and the Spicy Basil Eggplant. We like the chicken dishes because the chicken is never dry. I sometimes switch out the chicken for tofu, and maybe beef, but chicken is by far our preference. Also another favorite, and not just ours, is the Nutty Tilapia. One of the other restaurateurs down the street came in and told us that he orders it at least twice a week and eats it at this restaurant. He's got his staff ordering it too!! It's crazy delish!! Remember, if you like the Thai spice, you gotta ask for it. Just beware. And dessert should not be overlooked. I've had all of Thipi's desserts, and while the Thipi Basket is truly delicious, my faves are the Sticky Rice and Mangos and Banana Lovers...once again, simple but satisfying. Thipi also has a great selection of wines and beers, but if alcohol isn't for you, try the Thai iced coffee or Thai iced tea. I love it!! Top it off with authentic Thai servers who are polite, attentive and knowledgeable (I don't know how many times the server bowed before leaving the table, but I was starting to feel royal-like) and a really calming, almost feng shui-like ambiance...like I stated in the beginning, makes me wonder if we've gone to a different Thipi Thai than some of the other reviewers. Thipi Thai is a healthy and fresh approach to Thai standard dishes. Not that Thai dishes are unhealthy, but Thipi tends to keep the dishes light, not heavy although I always ask for a wheelbarrow or a bed after dinner. The food is always fresh and tasty and I've never had a dish served to me cold. For the Thai options in the area, it's our first choice. All I have to say is, I think it's worth a try. We stumbled upon this restaurant and decided to dine here. The decor was very nice. Our waitress was cool in a detatched way. My fiance and I ordered the Thipi Platter appetizer. My son and I are not big fans of egg rolls. We asked if they would switch out the egg rolls for the spring rolls, since they were priced the same. Our waitress flat out said no switching of the appetizers was allowed. I ordered their spicy garlic noodle with chicken, my son ordered the Thipi Thai and my fiance ordered the basil fried rice with chicken. Our appetizers and meals were fantastic. We decided to eat a dessert also. We ordered the chocolate pyramid. It was also great. I do recommend this restaurant. It is a needle in a haystack. read more

After coming here for years, Im not sure I'll be coming back. They no longer give you free tap water they decided to charge a dollar for water. So I get a bottle water and it's an Aquafina water bottle, which I hate so much. Ugh. Our server didn't bring us additional plates for the entree that was ordered. My boyfriend and I ended up using our plates that we used for our appetizer. My boyfriend ordered a drink and it didn't taste like they put liquor. Did I mention, most drinks went up from $9 to $12. If my most recent visit a few weeks ago was my only one, it would get one star, but I had been here before about a year ago. My dad lives in the area and likes it, so I've been with him a couple times now. I'm gathering from the reviews that Thipi Thai (nice alliteration in the name, btw) is rather hit or miss food-wise. Maybe depending on who is cooking that day. But the service seems pretty consistently mediocre. Rama Noodle with tofu = yuck. I was being adventurous and not getting Pad Thai, my favorite Thai dish, but going with a brand new one. Bad idea. It is thick noodles with a peanut sauce, and it was the most bland Thai dish I've ever had by far. Something about it seemed very off; there was just almost no flavor. My dad upon trying it suggested it needed salt. I think maybe they forgot to put the salt in the sauce. So, when we finally flagged down the server to bring salt, I salted it. This helped, but it's weird to have table salt on a dish like this, no matter how well I tried to mix it in, it just didn't taste right. I didn't end up eating much of it. The server didn't seem to care about this at all. I'm glad I've had Thai food enough to know it shouldn't be like this! Fortunately, the company I was with both liked their meals well enough. This place will always be the best of the Chicagoland Thai places to me. It was my first experience with Thai food and it is so worth the trip. Like my roommate, I judge a place by it's Pad Thai, and this is the best of the Pad Thai. The noodles aren't lumped together, the toppings come sprinkled on top, but also with some on the side so you can mix in as much as you like. After this first experience with Pad Thai I began looking for that same experience now that I have moved downtown. I've tried a bunch of places, but nothing beats Thipi Thai. The potstickers, too... they fry them up beautifully. You get a big doughy bite every time and the potsticker has a crunchy exterior with a soft doughy inside before you get to the meat. Also, the inside of this place is beautiful and I definitely have yet to find the same ambiance at this price point anywhere else. In fact, sometimes I worry that I receive some pretty on par Thai food at other establishments, but I worry that the romantic lighting, expensive looking dish ware, and general amazing interior design/ decoration of the space here taints my memory in a way that makes me think Thipi Thai will always be the best. I'd come back in a heartbeat any time I'm in the area, even if just for the nostalgia. read more
