I discovered the Crema di Espresso coffeehouse that's attached to the cozy hotel my wife and I…read morestayed at when traveling to Guadalajara from New York City. My first morning there I started off with a Machiatto, a double espresso with frothed milk which is my usual order at the coffeehouses in New York. My wife kicked off the day with one of her favorites, a latte grande. The richness of the flavor without a hint of bitterness blew us away. We'd never tasted coffee like this in New York, or in Seattle for that matter. The owner of Crema di Espresso was the barista that morning, and I started up a conversation with him about Mexican coffee. I learned that it ranks among the finest coffees in the world, better than coffee from Columbia, Brazil, or even Jamaica that produces the renowned Jamaica Blue Mountain. The coffee served at Crema di Espresso is hand sourced by the owner, and roasted by him in a medium dark Italian style. Like a vintage wine, appreciation is in the eye of the beholder. If you live in Guadalajara or are visiting there, the coffee at Crema di Espresso will open your eyes to the pleasure of premium Mexican coffee superbly roasted without the bitterness that you'd expect to find in a coffee with such exceptional full-bodied flavor.

The food is flavorful and delicious, and they also have vegetarian options. Also, the customer service is awesome. Although reservations aren't required, I highly recommend them on weekends. Otherwise, you'll be waiting almost an hour to be seated. This place is quaint, and they also have a back patio for outdoor seating. In all honestly, the restaurant has an outdoor feel but ask for patio seating (it's cute and lush with an assortment of plants). Ok, back to the food! I always order the chilaquiles (red or green...you can't go wrong with either) with chorizo and Americano coffee. My husband orders the "lonche" (equivalent to a French roll, but better, with pork meat). During our recent visit last week, we went back on Friday during their dinner hour and had some guacamole with machaca (dried up meat - kinda like beer jerkey) and blue chips and a few cocktails (I order Pensamiento which is like a whiskey sour but with gin. A must try!). On Friday they had a DJ playing 80s/90s music (nothing too loud, which was nice) and the tables each had a dimly lit light. Overall, a very nice experience and will return again whenever we're in Guadalajara.
