At the Gouger St end of the Central Markets you get all your fancy bits and pieces. The best organic fruit and veg, the expensive pasta sauces, the juicy, fat anchovies, squishy, smelly cheeses and top shelf chocolate tarts. At the Grote St end things are a bit more down to earth. This is where you get your second grade fruit and veg - the affordable stuff. The secret to buying second grade fruit and veg is careful selection. Buy in season, sus out which stalls have what produce, price compare, quality compare, judiciously sniff and squeeze everything you buy.
Thompson's Fruit and Veg is one of the second-grade fruit and veg joints that is keeping the Central Markets affordable for all of us. Second-grade doesn't have to mean bad - in particular the fruit here is quite good. Look out for melons, berries, mangos and apples. The tomatoes are good for bottling sauce too. Their prices are very competitive and generally their service is quite pleasant too. Out of the range of second graders down the back, Thompson's is one of the nicest. EFTPOS is available if you spend more than fifteen dollars. read more
