I selected Thornapple Brewing for a casual dinner on a Thursday night. The bacon cheeseburger requires a full five stars all by itself--no doubt. The selection of beers is top notch, including a few ciders and a mead if you're feeling adventurous. The one downfall, taking away a single star, is for the hard liquors here--just not remarkable and the mixed drinks (including a Rough Rapid that two of us tried) were actually sub-par. The Rough Rapid was perhaps the only gin drink I've ever ordered that I did not like, not one bit. So stick to the dive standards: burgers, beer, throw in a cider if you aren't up for beer. . .no cocktails! You'll thank me. read more

Thornapple has slowly become one of my favorite hang out spots closer to home! I've really enjoyed their pizzas, distilled drinks (lemon drop martini), and my favorite of all.....Karaoke ! I've visited a few times and enjoyed the live music, but recently came to celebrate my promotion. What an awesome surprise to see that giant karaoke song book and the DJ setting up the stage. We had such a great time that night, and the crowd/staff was pretty welcoming of our early 2000s rap songs haha My favorite pizza is their mango, habanero, chicken. Sorry can't remember the name but the ingredients are what matter ! I've also had their pork belly cracking, not a fan of these, but I think with a little practice they can get the texture right. By the number of people leaving the place with pizza boxes, pizza must be one the local favs. The night I was there they had a musician playing guitar inside and the patio (dog friendly!) was open. While I've sampled bites of my husband's order - the Cuban sandwich, the Smoked Brisket, and four of the different pizza options - and they've all been terrific, the fish and chips are so good I can't not order them. I love this spot. The gluten-free crust and cheesy pizza combo are incredible. I ate here two years ago, and it was still top-notch. I think the Hawaiian pizza was the best flavor, three pigs second. My husband none gluten-free crust was not 100% cooked. The beer is OK. The cider is too notch. The Sriracha cider is a must have favorite. The distilled spirits are also OK. The barrel aged gin was a smoother flavor vs the whiskey. This spot is a great place to relax and enjoy a wait before your flight. Only 10 minutes from the airport. Good food, beers, and atmosphere. Located in a strip mall in Cascade, Thornapple has doubled in size since it's opening - a clear sign of its success and popularity. Unfortunately the service is meh. Always on the slow side, whether the place is busy or has 3 tables, and regardless of any server we've had. If you're into slower dining then this place is definitely for you. But not great for an hour lunch break because you'll go over your time. That said, the food and beers are very good and definitely worth checking out. What is this? A brewery in Grand Rapids? How rare, how unique, how absolutely shocking? No, not really. As far as local breweries go though, this one was nice. I wouldn't put it up there with the powerhouses in the area. but I actually enjoyed it a little more because it had a very local, corner bar feel to it. We ordered the pizza and it was very well prepared. Thin crust, crisp, and light. It was a perfect meal for a rainy day. The beer was good also as was the service at the bar. Aesthetically, it had very much a typical craft brewery look to it. Love this place! I'm visiting Grand Rapids and have hit this place a few times. Food is interesting and good, more specifically, the pizza. I have tried the Hipster and Granny Goat. The guys at the bar have been very knowledgable and great with suggestions and letting you try stuff. For beer the Tr3y Way was my go-to and for cider I had a suggested concoction mix of Sriracha Sayonara and Ginger Peach which strangely worked. 100% recommend this place. read more

We stopped in on our way home to East Lansing from the airport to grab a much needed bite. The place looked cool and was about 1/4 full and we grabbed two seats at the bar. We were greeted quickly, but after hearing the specials we were told that a soccer team had just come in and 40 orders had been sent back to the kitchen causing an extensive back up. The bartender suggested that we enjoy a beer while we wait. So we did and the beers were great - IPA and Belgian Tripel. We watched several guests come in and find seats in a very non crowded restaurant that were told that the kitchen was too overwhelmed. This was all around 8:00 p.m. When I finally got the bartenders attention to place our food order, he asked what we were going to order and said that he needed to check with the kitchen before we placed our order. I would have ordered a burger and my husband was going to get the burrito that was listed as a special. After checking with the kitchen, we were told that they were no longer taking any more food orders. There was a lot of panic that we observed from servers and kitchen staff. It felt like we were in an episode of Restaurant Impossible. For place of that size with the extensive menu we saw, they should have been able to handle a 1/4 full restaurant 2 hours before closing, I will not be returning and I'm doubtful this place will stay in business. Hubby & I went during covid times outside dining only. Clunky Check in process - one line to check in for hut & order 1st round of drinks. Directed to our hut, still glasses & silverware from prior group on the table. Order taken promptly (hubby asked for another drink). One bite everyone knows the reviews, this place was sooooooOoOoooooo good. Solid score of 4.7. Pro tip, get hot sauce for the crunch wrap. The hummus dip was good but not great. I would definitely opt for the buffalo chicken dip if you are on the fence. The pizza was amazing, the sauce was so flavorful and there was no fop. Amanda was our server and she was so knowledgeable about the food and the beers she led us in the right direction till we got the perfect ciders that we loved and neither of us our big cider fans. Went here on a Saturday evening at 6:30. We had a group of 9 people, and the service was some of the worst I have ever had at a restaurant. We barely saw our waitress, and her service was so slow. She brought water to our table, handed me a stack of glasses, and rudely told me to pass them out. It was so bad that by the time we asked for our checks, I set a timer to see how long it would take her. Over 20 minutes to get our bill. By the 20-minute mark I got up to see if there we a manager I could talk to. I was told there was no manager there for the night, but they would try to find someone. No one came, but our server did finally come over with our bills. I would love to say the food made up for the poor service, but it didn't. read more

We have been wanting to try Thornapple Brewing since it opened but haven't made our way over there until late last night. It is in a strip mall but they have made the best of their space and actually have a nice patio, even though you're looking at the parking lot and 28th Street. The service was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was casual with quality music playing and they had the Tigers game on multiple TVs as well as projected on the wall. We started with the buffalo chicken dip which we thought was great. It came with fried pita bread, carrots, and celery. We then shared a bowl of their spicy chicken chili that we loved from the festival in Ada. The chili is fantastic and I'm glad it isn't over powered with spice, even though they call it spicy. We also shared a Hawaiian Pizza which was unique but tasty. I wish the ham/pineapple were small sizes rather than huge chunks but it was very good. The decorations inside are a little strange with the flashing neon lights and fishing gear but that doesn't take away from the quality service and food. read more

I had a meeting in the area, so my coworkers and I decided to come here for lunch after seeing it as a featured restaurant for Restaurant Week in Grand Rapids. The deal was $15 for 2 courses (appetizer and entree), which is pretty good. I like the bright, open, clean atmosphere. It was quite stuffy when we got there around 11:30, but they eventually turned on the air and it felt a lot better. For my appetizer, I got the fried polenta sticks with the homemade tomato sauce. It was seasoned well and had a nice crispy exterior. The tomato sauce provides the acidity needed to balance out the heavy starchiness of the polenta. For the entree, I ordered the bacon cheeseburger sliders, which were made with homemade pretzel buns and served with homemade kettle chips. The buns and chips were amazing - having things freshly made from scratch like that makes a huge difference. The meat was okay - it was cooked well done (they didn't ask how I wanted it cooked, but I should've asked for medium rare) and didn't have a ton of flavor. However, the bacon and cheese provided plenty of saltiness to balance that out. It was a hearty meal that I enjoyed - I'd definitely go back to try other dishes there, especially when they make so many things from scratch! read more

After multiple visits this brewery has moved up way, way up on my favorites list! I've enjoyed every beer I've tried here. They brew a wide variety so there is something for everyone (even non beer drinkers will enjoy their ciders/wines and meades). Their Trey-Way Belgian and Brown Eyed Girl are my favorites while my husband loves their Farmhouse saison. It rotates fast though so if you have your heart on something you may want to call and double check it's on. An excellent menu adds to the experience. They have daily specials as well as stellar permanent items. We love the "ghost" pizza with alfredo sauce, spinach and fresh mushrooms. The polenta sticks are a nice starter but very filling. It's family friendly, and while there is not a "kids" menu the regular menu has many child approved options. Service has always been attentive and accommodating. Can't wait to return! read more

This place makes the most of its strip mall location, with ample indoor and outdoor seating. I love that it's Fido-friendly outside, but it could use some greenery to obscure the lovely parking lot view. Indoors, the metal chairs make a deafening scraping sound on the polished concrete floor that could (no, *should*) be remedied with felt pads. The menu and brews are dynamic, and I was impressed. We weren't very hungry (and kinda wished we were so we could have sampled more of the eclectic menu). We tried the sriracha sayonara cider, which had the vaguest heat and a complex delicious flavor. Highly recommend. The mead has a strikingly sharp flavor that defies both its "mead" name and further description. The dip-style Starr elote with tortilla chips is amazing. It takes a pass on the mayo (instead using sour cream), has shucked roasted corn and peppers, and tajin for a zippy tomato-lime flavor. Would definitely do that again. read more

I've had this place recommended to me numerous times, so I was excited to finally try it. I hate to say, I definitely didn't have a great experience here. The service was terrible and extremely slow. We were at the table for 40 minutes before we even got water or had anyone acknowledge us. We were never asked if wanted drink refills. The place wasn't even very busy- only half of the tables were full. They ran out of pizza dough, so we each had sandwiches or burgers and the were all very mid, and definitely not worth the hour and a half wait we had to get them. I can't say enough about how AWESOME this place is! The place is clean and the decor pleasant, but that is just the start our waitperson, Tessa, was just the perfect blend of helpful, attentive, friendly, and an ability to show up right when we actually needed something. She knew the products and answered all questions and gave great suggestions/advice on what we would love. Ok, the food. I rarely have had pizza that was so delicious! We tried three different ones, the Caprese, the Krab Rangoon, and the Granny Goat. All of these were so tasty! I had ordered the Krab, and it was excellent, but the Granny Goat, with it's apple and feta, was so delectably unusual that I ordered another entire pizza to take home for the family to try. The beer, seltzer, cider, and spirits we tried were marvelous as well, I loved the pomegranate seltzer so much that I bought a howler of it to go, as did another in my party, the third took a howler of another flavor as well as a bottle of whiskey.
